Australian Idol should be cancelled.

I think it's great that there's a program that gives stacks of exposure to talented* singers who wouldn't otherwise get it.

*Okay, not all of them are especially talented. But there are some great ones.

the biggest problem that i see is that record labels are now signing this shit that they think will sell and it will sell mainly only on the back of the publicity caused by the television show. Most of these contestants will only EVER have a life of a maximum of 3 albums (there will be ocassional exceptions - guy sebastian, kelly clarkson) -
Album 1 - Sells well on the wave created by the tv show.
Album 2 - Sells ok, diehard fans and a few remaining from the tv show publicity buy it
Album 3 - They're now old news, nobody really likes them and the album flops.

My above theory would nearly be able to be applied to every Australian idol/popstars/x-factor contestant or winner.

the sad part of it all is the fact that there are many talented (and often more talented) bands and singers going unsigned and having to battle for everything. A great example of this is rock stalwarts You Am I being dumped by their record label. John Butler and 28 days starting their own record labels.

The problem there lies with the fact that the music industry is teeny bopper crap orientated

Most of the music is aimed at 15yo girls, and unfortunately 15yo girls dont listen to You Am I or John Butler:rolleyes:

Its crap, but its just the way it is :(

The problem isn't even that.

It's that the Australian music industry has no idea how to package an artist in a way which will portray them to a wide audience without them being called "****ta"

So many of the former contestants of Idol could have been HUGE SELLERS if they had only been packaged the right way.

Two examples of guys who were packaged a specific way, different to the rest are Guy Sebastian + Shannon Noll and they would have to be the most successful so far.
