Is trading dying?

Just a few random thoughts.....

I am noticing a few elitist collectors on here, I guess guys people all want to trade with trrying to dictate a cards value.

I was told two nights ago that a Larry Hughes Ultimate Gold /25 should book around $40

But tonight had someone I'd just traded with suggest that by valueing a Vince Carter Dual Patch /3 in a trade at $80 I had maybe scammed him (keep in mind I paid $80 cash on the card) and that "he was told" that it'd be worth maybe $40 or so. (To which I replied, there are 2 more in the world then, I'll pay you $40 for one of them if you can find it!)

The theme in the threads seems to be, more people sell than trade.

Trading is a lost art, dictated by arbitrary values, and the fickle nature of collectors.

I personally am contemplating throwing the entire "trade file" on Ebay and just buying the last 2 or 3 bits for my PC, and leave the hobby again. Trading's starting to lose it's desire.

Can we all honestly say that we're here for the hobby, some just seem to be after a buck or two.

So I encourage responses, what motivates you, are you still trading, or is it drying in your neck of the woods too?

What's fair and what isn't?

Selling will always be in the lead, but doesn't the word trading fall into the trade/sale category? If there wasn't no bread how would we feed our stomaches?

Anyho, trading is difficult at times and buying is very easy and fast trade. My favorite user name of all time is cardboardmoney, and he hails from sportscardforum.com.

It's like a judge, depends on how his day has gone, what's happening at home etc etc as to the final verdict. I know it's like that with me, I haven't been trading for a while now though but will get back into it strongly when I get back to Australia.

I find trading difficult, as I do have a lot of cards, but there are few people with the cards I am after, and the ones who do have cards I want, will not trade for the stuff I have on offer to trade.

It is much easier for me to find the card I want and pay for it.

Exactly the same for me Ersk - I don't think trading is dying here though seems to be piles coming through whenever I hit new posts it's bloody filled up with trades!!!

If people put value on what its worth and what they maybe paid/traded for it and then adjusted slightly for value change thanks to the market/demand better it wouldn't be a problem.

Trouble with trading is cards also hold a place in collectors pc and are some are cherished more than others regardless of value. When dealing with a player or team collector you would always expect to have to trade more for that card you want in that situation to aquire it yourself. Its been that way since the schoolyard of yesty year.

I'm more concerned when collectors here that pounce on members cards for trade/sale and then directly put them up for availability immediately for sale only and a high price. That sort of stuff shits me and members and had it happen recently.

And yes the hobby is now about making money to turn that profit into more cards it seems. It almost seems the sole reason most bust wax these days with 90% of the pulls put on eBay and not kept or traded in the traditional sense.

Maybe the term trading card is completely inacurrate these days???

After all who busts a $1000 pack of cards and then trades them for the players they want??

And remember trading hasn't and always wont be even. Sometimes you have to give up more to get what you want. Always been that way and as long as its not outrageously lopsided after you have cards you want and got rid of cards you didn't do you really care that much about the few dollars difference??

I buy cards I need (cos often cannot find a trade), but I very rarely sell - I only sell if I cannot find a trade and I probably sell too cheaply at times.

I usually buy and sell, purely because if you want something it's easier to use money for one half of the trade and then do the same to get a card you want. I think if you had to only trade for other cards you'd never be able to get some of the ones you want.

Well I have not traded anything here I would keep in my PC. I am trading purely because some of the members here need my card's for their sets or player collections..... Only my last trade with ozguy, He got a few Kobe's, 1 being a hardwood imagery, i could have sold that on Ebay for close to $30.. I'd rather help out fellow Aussies collectors..... Cause let's be real honest here it's the collector in Aus that is dying not trading. All my mates used to collect, now it's only you guys who I know collect. We should all be on here to help eachother, what goes around comes around....

I have all but stopped collecting over the last few months. I sold nearly all my trade stuff and am only buying stuff I really want.

The other problem lately is the amount of cards going missing in the mail, it's hard enough trying to work out a trade but then for the cards to go missing you have to work something else out which usually involves $$$.

I've been super lucky with things not going missing, hope it continues!

I'm now registering everything over $50 value too.

No offense Baja but doubt you have been here long enough (less than 1 month) to make comment on this sites trades.....you only have to look at the trade thread or peoples trade feedback to see that it's still ticking over beautifully..... the only problem I've come across is members that want something for nothing.

The other problem is what people do with the cards you sell/give them as chad said......the last 2 cards I have GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE....to poeple...one ended up on ebay within 2 days and the other ended up on the for sale thread of this page...(not gonna name names you know who you are) its just pathetic.

I think he may be talking about trading in general....not just here !

I remeber the days you could bust a few packs at your favourite shop and trade what you didn't want straight back for credit or cards you did want.......even base cards could be traded back into the shop !!!

Ahh those were the days ;)

Yer those were the days roflmfao...thats why 99% of card shops went bust and the owners ended up with 1000000000000000000000000000000000000 common cards in 5000 count white boxes in their garages..... <claps> great days

man, id trade all the time (and i used to in the early days), but the fact is no one has the cards im after, no one else collects old schoolers.

The last time I posted on the price thread on here was to find out a value of a card to make a trade, would I be right in traiding book value for book value, unless like stated if its some ones pc then you may have to give up more in saying that though, people dont genreally give up pc because I know I havnt given up any of mine yet.

I also usuallly buy like ersk because 70 of my cards are pc so I do not have much to trade at all.

I don't sell any of my cards and don't intend to. The reason I bring in semi decent cards into my collection of players I don't collect is for trade bait. Not much point in my mind to sell them just to make an odd dollar or so. Having said that, 75% I get in are purchased through guys here or off the bay.

I'd trade if I want a card that has been offered. :)

I remember a couple of months ago, I traded with Linn and someone from here sent me a PM and giving his opinion that I got sort of ripped off. He thinks that the deal was too much in Linn's favor. My trade with Linn.

But for me, I agreed to the deal because of the fact that I needed those cards and I know that Linn wants them. Trading should not be based only on book values but for being happy about it. Its a hobby! :D

I dont think that trading is gone. Its just not very often that a trade is possible. I also thought about having a 3 or more trade partners if thats the way I can get a card that I want.
