This might seem like a dorky question but I'm a straight up last minute/second bidder - I NEVER bid before that and pump the price up - I don't see the point. I have noticed plenty here do though.....

Why do people bid DAYS before the auction ends and risk pumping up the finishing price???

Your thoughts.....

There are only two plausible reasons that I can see to do so....one being to desuade the seller from cancelling the auction early and secondly to try and "scare" people away from bidding at all. I don't believe that either of these reasons are valid, so I also like to set my scopes and snipe away.

I usually bid when I see it, if I get it cool, if not, oh well. Not that hardcore to stalk auctions but I can see the benefit in it

U think people who perhaps have more $ to play with don't care as much when they bid? (don't take this the wrong way anyone!!! ;))

I reckon it's kind of poor form to snipe. I know it's the logical thing to do. I just figure that auctions are supposed to deliver the highest price someone would be willing to pay. The person selling has to pay a bunch of fees, and send the ****er, and list it -- I figure they deserve to get a reasonable price on it.

(Though sometimes I check My eBay and see that an auction is finishing soon. Then I get my snipe on. But I feel a little bit dirty for it, haha).

I know what u mean, but I feel like to make the most of my $ I have to bid in the last minute.

What would stop that would be...... if a bid was placed in the last 2 minutes then the 2 minutes restart...this happens on a huge auction site in New Zealand called trademe - every time someone bids in the last 2 minutes, the clocks resets back to 2 minutes....it leads to items getting fairer prices

since im a night shift worker starting at 1900, with most auctions finishing at around 2000-2100 generally (not always) i have to bid before the end of an auction

I wait but I don't use snipe tools... so sometimes I put my max bid on and see what happens. I did that with a Googs Auto I was pushed up to $4.38 ($10 was max) but the bids stopped there...

It just depends on when I can be there cos I do not use snipe tools and wouldn't know how.

Yeah, I really think eBay needs to do something about bid sniping. It's bad for buyers, and it's bad for sellers. The extra two minute rule seems like a very good idea. Or maybe restricting bids in the last ten minutes to people who've bid previously. Or maybe closing the auction at a random time within the last 20 minutes, so people are forced to bid before the 20 minutes, not knowing exactly when the auction will end.

I don't know why eBay don't do something about it. It's retarded.

That said, it's a buyers right to go for a bargain. Why give all the power to the seller? Shill bidding is all they need, it happens, and most of them that do it smartly get away with it. So why give them more power?

That is an excellent idea!!! I usually set snipes through auctionsniper.com and it frustrates the hell out of me when I get sniped back! That would be much fairer and ould probably see things ending at higher prices. eBay would benefit from that too.

Well, I don't. I bid as much as I'm willing to pay. If they want to get to that total with shill-bidding, I don't care much.

Also certain player collectors know the other big guns they're up against and sometimes if you see them bidding its not even worth trying sometimes....

How interesting - does this work??

Sometimes it can help you win some of those auctions that tend to slip through to the keeper....it is a bit like the Doc said earlier...it can work to your advantage by scaring some people away...but if people want it badly enough there is no way you can control the auction.

Fair enough, but if there's gonna be 3 or 4 keen bidders anyway -all it's gonna do is force the price up. I wouldn't have thought this would work unless u constantly 'bossed' auctions and scared people away because they know u have $ to burn...

Maybe that's why it works for me?? Maybe having over 2000 feedback is intimidating as well??

For me, i bid whenever i see it fit... and never bid my max if i have enough time..

coz bidding last second is actually addictive... and you will have to spend more time on ur computer.. bid shilling i couldn't care less.. coz there's no card i am dying to own yet... or anything else in the world...

so, i may get what i want, or sometimes may not.. but i would probably end up getting reasonable or let others pay more...

but Dwight Howard cards, i would bid quite close or maybe over to book value, i don't want them cheap, coz it will only make his total value go down in the long run.... and Dwight cards don't actually end cheap too.. unless people overlooked them.

This is a great and interesting discussion, indeed.. thanks for throwing the different point of views....
