well, the Dusty show comes to a grinding final stop today.
It was always on the cards, but still a sad and reflective day for many.
The impact this man has/ had on our hobby is still huge, he instigated the Dusty/richmond tax on many of his cards from 17'-20'.
One of the first players to see his DPS fly $ high and remains there.
Many collectors spent some major money putting together a Dusty collection.
Glad new players will carry the card market foward, but there will only ever be one Dusty ..

The AFL history books will be kind to him. I'm Collingwood through and through but Martin is imo the MJ of the AFL era 1990-

That he won 3 Norm Smith medals from as many attempts is absolutely insane. Throw in a Brownlow and it's a record that will almost certainly never be beaten, especially in an era where the premiership window doesn't stay open for long.

Also, he's part of one the most amazing runs (2017-2020) for any football club period. Richmond were wrecked at the end of 2016 - the 7th year of their rebuild - and the coach should have been sacked. They stuck with him, started 2017 as 67-1 rank outsiders and the rest is history.

The Richmond/Martin story from 2017-2020 is as epic it gets.

Richmond supporters got the ride of their lives.

I got a bit carried away there. In terms of the hobby it will be interesting to see how his cards hold up in retirement. I suspect they will hold up very well. All of them.

His 2017 Footy Stars Brownlow sig Card has to be his best. No idea how many were redeemed but they will be worth a small fortune in years to come. It will have the 3 flags and 3 Norm Smiths baked into the price. Might be the grail card of the AFL hobby.

Edit: If I had a spare $1,100 I would drop it on his DPS in a second. The only 'knock' on the card is that he looks about 15 years old and I can't even remember him looking like that it's so long ago. I think what Stevic said in the Cardboard addicts doco rings true: the Oz hobby is more star focused rather than obsessed with rookie cards like the US market is. I'd absolutely love the DPS card but would rather have a licensed auto from his peak years if it could be had for a similar amount. Not sure on his sig prices as I haven't followed his market but maybe you can get one for $1200ish

the 17' b.low booklet is a grail and fantastic card.
but not his biggest.
the supremacy norm smith booklet or supremacy premiership brownlow signature are the top of the tree.
** the 17' booklet (with the DPS) has that grail element because it is more obtainable to the average collector.

II just looked and was very surprised at the Brownlow card. That's a bargain imo. I saw it for sale around 10K at one point in 2020 and assumed it may have sold for 7-8K.

I completed overestimated the market based on seeing that listing a few years ago. His DPS is going for about 1200 and his BP sig for 1300. Those seem like bargains to me but I don't know the local market like I do baseball and hockey.

Did the Covid insanity for NBA and NFL also affect the AFL market?

yes it did... but Dusty was the big $$ boy from 17' - 22'ish
the percentage of his cards have now come down In market price, and others have taken over the market king status.
One thing that coincided was richmond was winning premiership's at the same time Dusty was the biggest player in the comp.
The field has now changed on both fronts.
