2024 Olympics Basketball thread

Instant thoughts watching this warm up game USA v AUS - this style is amazing - I know the pace is unlikely to keep up the whole game but will most American fans come to like this FIBA rules style more? Surely they will? I know the NBA game is amazing but man, there’s something to the intensity and the quick passing flow of this game NBL fans are used to and love.

I’ve checked out a few warm up games and imo it shows the difference between nba players and other players. Players that play in the euro league and even the nbl to a degree adapt better due to the rules and the need to play a more team orientated game. Where the nba players which is a superstar dominated league you can see play differently and try to iso more. It should be interesting to watch

I've just been loving it - for ages I was feeling bad for NFL fans having to dedicate 4hrs or whatever crazy time it was for a game but slowly the NBA has been creeping up there too. There's too many games - they don't mean enough during the long regular season IMO they should reduce the season to like 60 games. 10 minute quarters are great in the NBL - go to a game, in and out in 2hrs it's so good.

I guess its a case for the NBL of less money less problems. NBA and NFL have to deal with a multitude of marketing and broadcasting stipulations that the nbl just wouldn't have. More money more problems. I guess thats why the NFL and NBA are billion dollar sports.

Yeah but they are so big they can't change now when they should - it's all about someone would lose money. NBL is in a great spot - at the ground floor - a lot of ex players investing in the league etc

From a spectator perspective they probably should. From a business perspective even if they could they wouldnt. Thats an issue happening with alot of modern day sports they are a business first and a sport second. We dont have that issue in Australia much due to not having the population but that fact also affects our leagues. The average attendance for a lakers game i think was around 18,000 where we would be lucky to get 2,000 people watching the hawks play at win stadium. The aleague cant afford to bring in big names. nrl and afl still get big numbers of crowds as they were the main sports for most kids in the 80's, 90's.

This has gotten off topic hahahah. I'm hoping Giddey and the boys do well its a tough group to get out of though.

Penny for your thoughts. So who thinks Team USA won't win the gold?

I think they probably will, but they didn;t seem to vary too much from their World Champs disaster of a small ball lineup. Very guard heavy lineup with Bron and KD likely playing a lot of frontcourt minutes. One frontcourt injury to Bam or AD and they're eina world of trouble, Embiid looks out of sorts.

On a different tangent what do we think of the Boomers not selecting Matisse Thybulle? I knowppl think of him and Dyson Daniels as essentially the same player but still... I thought Matisse generated a lot of transition with his defense. I also think Delly is pretty much cooked at this point, doesn;t bring the spacing, perhaps an extra ball-handler.

...and am I the only one who questions why Kick Kay is there at all? Xavier Cooks looks much more ahtletic and defensively capable imho.

Not sure if Australia will even get out of the Group of death stage. Probably a dub against Greece but Spain and Canada are both 50:50 games.

That was surprising with no Cooks - and the coach of his NBL team made the call too - very weird

While i take articles with a grain of salt, if the below is true the Embiid situtation is a bit of a joke. But well within the rules.

"Obviously, I got my home country, Cameroon, which I love, and the U.S., where I've been for 14 years now, and then France, where I have a lot of family," Embiid said. "I kind of felt rushed in that decision. I wanted to take as much time as possible, and it didn't help that France had put an ultimatum on when the decision had to be made." This was the decision to either suit up for France or the USA

"As Joel Embiid prepares to play in the Olympics for the first time in his career, the former NBA MVP has opened up about his decision to suit up for Team USA instead of France."

"The Philadelphia 76ers star did say his first choice would have been to play for his home country of Cameroon if they had qualified. He also explained that he had a discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron to relay concerns he had about the country's relationship with Cameroon and other African countries."

So he wants to play for Cameroon but they didnt make it. Got given French citizenship allowing him to play for France. Four months later he gets American citizenship allowing him to play USA.

Enough of my ramble on Embiid playing for the USA.

I think they will still win but it wouldn't surprise me if its close in games or they lose some. One of the main issues they have is team chemistry. They don't play together thats why you see them playing a lot of ISO. While most international teams have been together for a while playing comps together and representing their country. You dont know who your going to get with the USA team it changes everytime they play. Half the time the players don't want to play. Alot of the other teams all played together at the FIBA world cup. You would be lucky to find more than 2 players from that tournament in the current USA team. They aren't used to FIBA rules which slows the play down and doesn't allow up tempo game play which is the total opposite of the NBA which is based around athleticism and fast play.

I was surprised they didnt take Thybulle, I would of taken him over McVeigh. And the Cooks snub was surprising. I think we will make it out of the group. If not from being in the top two we should at least be one of the best 3rd place teams who go through.

Thybulle was my favourite Boomer, his defense sets the tone. If only he was a few inches taller... I'd have prioritised Cooks over a few other bigs, just can't see Magnay contributing much at all behind Landale and Reath, more of a big-man insurance policy I guess.

Should make it out of the group, and definite medal contenders, like you mentioned , that core has been in tact for quite some time.

Yes, the classic team of stars vs a star team scenario. We should have spent more time convicning Kyrie to don the green and gold!

Awesome, I'll definitely be watching this. Hopefully 9 doesnt do that thing where they cut away to some random sport like equestrian that no one cares about.
