The Australian cricket non-official thread!

From someone who doesnt watch as much cricket as others, there seems to be a few blokes knocking on the door for say the number 6 spot eg Maxwell but not too many in the top order

Yeah that's right, and that's why I'm a bit worried about them moving SOS back up to open to accomodate one of those guys pushing for a middle order spot.

A pancake-flat pitch will offer opportunities for Bancroft, Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh to play long, determined innings over the next two days. It can’t always be left to Warner and Smith to shoulder the batting load and this second innings will tell us quite a lot I think.

I felt that our two bowling tactics - a. “around the wicket” and/or b. “bounce him out” - bordered on arrogance and complacency today. It might have been worth aiming for the three wooden things at the batsman’s end more than once or twice every few overs or so. That said, these drop-in pitches at the MCG are about as useful to fast bowlers as putting a woman under Liberace!! :-)

Alastair Cook has created an extraordinary entry into the record books: he now holds the highest score by anyone carrying their bat in Test cricket. The previous record was held by New Zealand batsman Glenn Turner, who scored 223 out of 386 against the West Indies in 1972. What a way to return to form, and what a riposte to the critics.

I have always admired Alastair’s manner and the way he conducted himself under intense pressure as captain. Well done, Chef!

A very fine innings from Cook, one which has put England in a very strong position to win the match.

Bancroft is getting starts but not going on with them at the moment. He looked a lot better today before getting out. I feel like he's not far away from it all clicking and him going on to a big score - the problem is he's only got two more chances in this series to do so!

Anyway, hopefully Warner and Khawaja can put on a partnership here and get us close to level!

That was Khawaja's real big chance to bat as slow as he wanted and grind out a decent score, but failed. Just looking at live score updates so not sure if it was a poor shot or not.

Looked to be a good pill. Good line and length and moved away

Both Bancroft & Khawaja need scores next test.

Chatting to a Heat trainer and I asked why Renshaw was in the squad because he is not a T20 player. Apparently he came back QLD very overweight and unfit then struggled with the bat. In the Heat squad to keep him training hard

That's actually pretty interesting about Renshaw. Thought he would be the type to stay right on top of training, fitness, etc. Probably means he was even further away from being picked for this series than I thought.

Yeah I think you are right. Despite his terrible domestic form I think he was still a chance being the incumbent with reasonable international form. Fitness reflects desire and attitude so dropping him might bring back the hunger.

Despite our domestic comp being arguably the toughest in the world it shows how big the step to test cricket is.

So Mitch Marsh isn’t in any kinda hurry then, must be exciting cricket to watch lol. Any before you point it out, yes I know what the Aussies are doing.
