The Australian cricket non-official thread!

Always been a huge Paine fan. If not for that horrible finger injury he would have been Haddin's long term successor.
I will still never understand how Hartley wasn't mentioned!

Bailey at 6, hmm, great player but a bit like Maxy I feel. Really good when we need to score runs quickly and have a decent total or lead but not convinced he can play a tough ugly innings against top notch bowling and a swinging pill.

Yeah Renshaw has been poor. I think they will pick him for the first test though. Apparently he had a torrid work out in the AB nets v Starc, Cummins & Hazlewood and went well. Big difference in the middle though

The squad for the first two Tests has been confirmed:

Steve Smith, David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Chadd Sayers

I don't mind it. Initially wasn't sure about Paine's selection, but now I don't mind it. He surely won't provide less than what any of the other keeping contenders would have in all likelihood.

Less than a week to go before the first ball. I'm pumped!

I think I love Adam Zampa right about now.

In other news, Matthew Short and Jason Sangha who can not make their respective states 1st eleven are currently destroying the England pace attack in Townsville. CXI are currently 3/329 with both Short and Sangha passing the hundred mark and looking very confident. England must be embarrassed.

This is currently my second favourite tweet of the day (after Adam Zampa's of course).

Matthew Short also gave this Townsville Groundsmen a chance to take this blinder of a catch. Reminds me of that catch that the sightscreen attendant (at the WACA I think) caught a few years ago.

Worries for England at the minute!

Catch of the summer haha

Tim Paine interviewed on ABC Radio saying he knows why he's been selected and that's because he's the best keeper in Australia.

Recently, I'd hazard to say, he wasn't even the best keeper in Tasmania.

Only repeating what Trevor Hohns said about him the other day... Then again, I'm not sure that's quite what I want to hear coming from Paine's mouth. Tooting your own horn doesn't do any good.

My wife and I said the same thing.

I bear no ill will to Paine. But he wasn't in the conversation for a month.

Wade vs Nevill.

Nevill has every right ro feel aggrieved.

What does everyone think about how the series itself will play out?

My own view might surprise a lot of you, but here goes:

I really don’t care whether Australia OR England win the Ashes. I don’t feel any connection to the national team (or certain individuals in it) any more, for a lot of reasons.

Having watched the women’s Ashes series unfold over the last few weeks, the personalities, sportsmanship and exuberance of the Australian and English girls is to me what cricket should represent. They are a credit to themselves and the sport.

I will be able to watch as a neutral for the first time in my cricket-following life....it’s just not tribal for me any more.

As to the result: I think England might win, to be honest. Australia’s selections (and non-selections) seem quite peculiar to me. I really fear that embarrassment might follow.

Some of the Aussie team need to come back to reality.

Friends of mine were at NSO on Friday and got selfies, autos from all the wonen. Starc was there. They said he was aloof and he signed stuff begrudgingly.

I know for a fact CBA reduced its major sponsorship because dealing with a lot of the male elite players and getting them to do promo was near impossible.

They're still sponsoring but they're changing how they do it, with more focus on women's cricket too.

Personally, I think Australian batting is brittle unless it's a road. Our bowlers will be our strength.

It is horrible to think u get in this side as a bat with very few runs these days. We're scratching to find six bats where fifteen years ago u needed 10000 shield runs or 1000 run SS summers to be ignored.

I don't like Smith either at the moment. I still think there are huge ? marks over his captaincy. There's an arrogance about some of the team that isn't justified.

The fresh face of Renshaw (deservedly) being dropped has stung me. Shaun Marsh picked because they want an "opener" at six to face the 2nd new ball will do me. If Shield form really mattered Handscomb would be under the pump too. Paine's selection is very wtf?!

Still, there is hope Lyon and Haze will carry the team as will Smith and Warner's batting. I hope Cam Bancroft can go gangbusters...he's a real talent and I'd have had him at 6.

I'm excited but in a lesser way. Have had too much on with school, sport and RLWC, ladies cricket that it's snuck up on me.

Heard a interesting stat last night, Darren Lehmann has scored a 1st class hundred more recently the Tim Paine.
Is he a better keeper than Nevill, debatable, certainly isn't as good with the bat and is a year older, certainly looks like face saving from the selectors.
