The start of the new season of basketball for me, with a new team after the rest of my team decided to stop playing, move to other teams or simply retire.

Myself and my mate have joined a team, which consists of 4 16 and 17 year olds and one of there dads, who is about 35 and about 6'5 ; techinically they joined our team, but they out number us so its there team.

The young guys are pretty good actually (the dad makes Yao Ming look like Tyrus Thomas athletically), but dear God their parents (no offence to anyone in that age bracket :p) are full on.

Apart from the one that plays, one of them does the coaching (which you can imagine i wasnt over the moon about at first, but all he does is call time outs), one does the scoring, and another actually does stats. I personally couldnt believe it, the guy had a whole lot of spreadsheets printed up, and he wrote them in, with his wife helping  . My girlfriend just sits there, reading a book, and if she is in a good mood, passes my drink to me.

We played our 1st game tonight, and smashed a team of mixed ages, a young fella, a couple of blokes my age (21) and a few older guys, winning 61-30.

I personally played pretty well, shifting between SF-PF-C, after having been playing as a SG last year; Im more Jimmy Jackson than Michael Jordan at that spot, i can shoot or guard lol.

I have to admit that the younger guys made me look pretty good by nailing their shots, and according to stats man, i got 9 assists to go with my 6pts, 7rebs and one Bill Russell like block (the guy sort of slipped as he drove in and I smashed the ball away  ).

I was pretty happy, especially as my knees have been fairly bad, so I hobbled around more than usual.

So we are 1-0 in a 7 team league, with pretty good percentage.

Hopefully this will be a weekly affair, and I might be able get some "official" stats to up.

Dude, your an absolute basketball superstar! I hafta say the funniest bit has to be highlighted below!

Yeah, its probably the best ive played for a while, that said, I probably only made about 13-15 passes and the young fellas nailed those shots, as did the big fella in the middle.

The best bit about the block; it was on the blindside for my team, so everyone thought it was a legit block, not me taking advantage of a good opportunity.

yeh man our season just started we won it last year but my team have parted and they decided to stop playing leaving me and 2 of my mates still wanting to play i guess i have to start looking to make a new team or look to join but man..............keeping stats reminds me of my mates dad my 1st coach LMAO he used to do that and i used to crack up at the bloke.

ahhh new season starting this week for me. Considering I havent touched a ball in 2 weeks, and all Ive done is hit the piss, I think I'll need to practice a bit this weekend...should be all good but!

Well after a 3 week break from playing, due to ANZAC day, a bye and then a forfeit, we played our 2nd game this season.

We played a team full of young players, with 1 old guy, and lost by 3 points, 43-40.

Personally, I scored 7pts (2-5FG, 3-4FG), 3 assists and 4 rebs (2 offensive, 2 defensive) 1 steal and 4 fouls in 35 minutes

We started fairly slowly, with our SF (who is 6'1 and 100kgs, while i'm our PF at 6'0 and 70kgs) trying to break the world record for most poorly advised 3 pointers in a game, he nailed 1-9 for the game, but after our PG took over and scored a few driving layups, we got back into the game; 22-19 at half time.

That was changed to 24-17 at the start of the 2nd half; supposedly the scoring lady stuffed up. Our massive C scored a few baskets, keeping us in the hunt, until an stupid decision by the refs to not award me a foul, after i did the little pump fake, and got a hand/arm in the nose and got a blood nose; evidently the blood didnt indicate i was hit in the face.

After i spent 5 minutes on the bench, i came back on for the last 2 minutes, in which our young players imploded, making a couple of poor passing options, leading to fast break points for the opposition. I got a couple of trips to the foul line in the last 30secs, but they managed to hold, leaving us with a 2-1 record for the year.

In an interesting sidenote, the game before ours was the U10 girls (for the record the scoreline was 1-0) and they left the rings down to 8 feet, so me and young fellas took turns doing alley oops (after they released i was the only who could actually catch and dunk it they threw it only to me), i did a sick one hand throw down. In retrospect, we probably shouldnt have stuffed around as much before the game; it probably screw with our shooting form.

How do you guys keep all your stats? Do they record them all, or is this just from memory?

I think our tallest player is 6-0, and then we're all under him, lol.

One of the young fellas who plays with us, his dad keeps the stats; he tells us at the end roughly how we went and then brings them the next week... we have only played twice and he brought the 1st game stats with him on wednesday, i guess he does it every week.

Our Centre is about 6'4, but god, he is unathletic, makes Dikembe Mutombo look like Josh Smith. I'm a small 6'0 being only 70kgs, but ive got a decent nose for a offensive board cos i know my limitations, and i dont spend time wandering around the perimeter, looking for shots i know i wont be able to hit.

Lovin the recaps, keep them coming!
You're SF sounds like Toine walker lol. I think he holds the record for most attempts without a made 3 pointer at 9?

what div/age do you play? like b-grade mens or what?
sounds like its fun. your pretty lucky you have a dedicated stat man

First off, thanks for the interest guys, i enjoy writing it a few notes about the game, and im glad a few of you take a fleeting interest.

Tonight we won 39-35 against last years Mens C1 champions, the SupaRoos, we are pretty happy with that

I started on the bench, as per our rotating bench policy, which evidently doesnt apply to our C or PG  . While I was sitting there, one of the young guys (Josh) father came over a gave me box scores from games 1 and 2, which he had printed up and was going to keep. I asked if I could get a copy, so next week i'll have them; i might scan them up.

Anyways, I had a pretty good game by my standards.

I scored 10 points on 5-7 Field Goals, along with 6 boards (3 def 3 off) and 4 asts. Defensively, i played the best game i have for a while, holding the oppositions star player to about 10 points, only probably 2-20 from the field.

The rest of team was a bit off, but when i grabbed control  in the
2nd half, scoring all my points as we fought back to win, after trailing 20-15 after the 1st half in which I grabbed a board and got 2 fouls, another great start!

About 10mins left in game, I scored a very nice drive to the basket, before repeating the dose the next trip down the floor.

I got another basket on a fast break, which was a easy, open floor lay up.

We pulled within 4 points before I pulled one of my old post moves out, slid past my defender and nailed a inside J.

The SupaRoos, now fearful of my driving ability  stood back and gave me room, so I sorta stop started my way to about 10 feet, and after nobody came near me, I nailed a short jumper.

According to Mister Stats Man, so far my player stats would be:

GP: 3
GS: 2
Min/MPG(approx only): 95/31.7
FG: 9 of 18 (50%)
3pts: 0 of 0 (0%) believe me its going to stay that way
FT's: 5 of 7 (71.4%)
Rebs: 7 offensive, 10 defensive, 17 total (5.7rpg)
assists: 16 (5.3apg)
steals: 2 (0.67spg)
blks: 2 (0.67bpg)
points: 23 (7.7ppg)

By the way, in reference to my Antoine Walker clone of a friend, he has shot 3-17 3's so far this year, including tonights game, thats very Toine like

great start :)

Currently we are 5 rounds deep in our new season... Ive gone from the passing PG to more of a scoring threat.. not sure where it came from but Im currently leading the division in scoring which is abit of a highlight to my long career :) Last 2 games Ive dropped 32,34 tonight Ive got a game maybe ill go for 36 LOL

I also run a series with my boys... Basically a 7 game series I host down at the local stadium.... Great Fun and I video tape the whole thing so I do stats and so on.... Lots of fun :)

After last week's great effort, we sucked big time tonight, losing 57-18.

First of all we had only 4 players; we were missing our little point guard, our 6'5 Centre and our Antoine Walker clone of a PF, leaving us with myself, a very undersized pf and 3 shooting guard/ small forward types.

We got docked 10pts for not having enough players (one guy was 5 mins late); not the best start.

We struggled all night long against a team that not only did a full court press on a team with only 4 players, but also ran at full speed on fast breaks and ran up the score, which IMO isn’t great sportsmanship.

What i KNOW isn't great sportsmanship is one of the opposition player deliberate tripping one of our players on attempted fast break, by kicking him in the leg. He got a tech, as I did for giving him a good shove and getting bailed up by

Personally, I grabbed 14 boards and scored 6 points playing the dual role of Point Guard and Centre. I also passed for 1 assist, and got a blocked shot.

So after that bad loss, we are 3-2, and hopefully getting core back for the next game...
