Tips on starting to collext

Don't blow your money on busting boxes unless you're happy to lose some $$$. It's the most fun of course, but the best way to collect is to purchase singles.

Work out if you're going to do a set, or chase a player/team.

Best of luck and welcome.

I would advise to read through all the forums first to get a more well rounded opinion on collecting in general. BO forums, sportscardforum, hobbykings, ozcardtrader, beckett message boards, etc.

Start with purchasing commons of your favorite players, they a few low-mid end boxes, and when you're more comfortable you can try out the high end then super high end stuff.

Or you can jump in with 2 feet straight to the high end stuff. Whatever you and your bank account feel most comfortable with.

You got to pick what you are going to get into. Be it a specific player, team, set, parallel, autos, RCs, or whatever it may be. Then start slow and see how you go.

If you are not sure you can just buy a box of what looks nice and try your LUCK. And I do mean luck.

Maybe pick an event like the All Stars or (for example) 1994/95 NBA finals game and maybe pick up one card each player.

Then you can go from there.

Appreciate the help :)
If i was to start with a specific player, what kind of cards should i be getting first?

Basically look on the net and whatever takes your eye and in your price range then go for it.

If you are going to collect a specific player most would want to get a Rookie card, probably an on card autographed card and a patch card of the player.

Some people like some bling so they go for prizm gold parallel or Select Tie Dye parallels look nice.

Some like high end so may go for National Treasures, Flawless, Immaculate or Exquisites.

And of course many would like logoman cards of their players but those are very expensive and can be out of the range of the average collector.

Ersk

Whats the best way to find out the price a card is worth?

Thanks for all the help :)

Low to mid end just use your 9 page sleeves in a 3 prong A4 binder. For your better cards, most like to keep them in top loaders or one touches in something a bit sturdier like a small draw unit or a brief case type of carrier. There are a few options out there that you can customise a bit to suit.

If you are in a major city, you should try and visit a store or a trade event which happen from time to time across the country. A lot better to get advise in person than over a message board too as you can see in person.

Im from sydney area, how can i find out about these events? and what stores?

If I were you, I'd pick your favourite player, and start going from there!
Some top guys are cheaper then you'd think (Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard & Andrew Bogut are some examples of this), and you can get In straight away. I try and get anything of my players (Whether it's a $0.50 base card, $2 insert or a $300 1/1)

As for buying boxes, you have really no idea. Most boxes IMO are fun breaks for new breakers (Prizm, Innovation, Hoops, etc.), and you can go onto high end stuff later if you want.

And as for storing cards, I'd personally get albums for your commons and other inserts and set chases, toploaders for autos, patches, jerseys and other stuff like that, one-touches for some of the best cards you have, and for your greatest mint condition cards, maybe get them graded by Beckett.

As for shows, I'm not sure about Sydney, but in Melbourne, 80% of cards at shows are NBA & AFL. I'd imagine that there would be more NRL than AFL, but there should be some NBA. Sonny is an awesome guy, and last year @cherrycollectables went up to a Penrith show, he may come to another one this year.

So yea! Have fun with your collecting. Thanks!

Thanks Man! :) Are box breaks worth buying into?
Where else other than here and ebay can i buy cards?

ComC.com is another place to buy cards. Plenty of members here use it as a mailbox service in the US, as a lot of sellers don't ship internationally, or if they do, it's too expensive!

I use it for both
