I just read some disturbing news...

Apparently Upper Decks exclusive agreement with the CLC (College Licensing Company) expires in March, and Panini have signed an exclusive agreement to produce College cards from 2016 onwards.

What worries me is that I haven't read anything about Panini's NBA agreement expiring, so if Panini has exclusive rights over NBA and College...where does that leave Upper Deck?

More importantly, this gives Panini a very clear Monopoly in the market as it essentially alienates the only legitimate competition Panini has - how can this be allowed? Aren't there legal rules against that type of thing?

I'm pretty concerned about this because as far as I'm concerned Panini has already gotten complacent and lazy since they go the exclusive NBA license - I can only imagine how boring and generic their products will get once they have the entire market to themselves. As they say, competition pushes the boundaries and forces everybody to up their game - better for everyone.

Upperdeck will become the new leaf. They will still produce cards just without the team and nba logos - exactly what they did with the latest release of exquisite.

Pretty much...

There are three reasons why I prefer buy Upper Deck over Panini:
1) Jordan
2) Lebron
3) Card design

If anything the fact that they are College Jerseys is a negative, but it's offset by all of the above.

If Panini takes over College cards then they won't have Jordan, they wont have Lebron, and they probably won't have a good card design. Seems pointless to me...not much incentive for going with the College products over the NBA products, unless you're just a really big College basketball fan.

Ahh, yeh I noticed some of the shoe cards have the bulls Jerseys.

Maybe those cards were a UD Experiment to try out the 'NBA jersey without showing logos' and see if it works haha

It sucks, but CLC doesn't encompass all Colleges (Ohio State) and UD is free to have direct agreements with schools, such as the existing deal they have with Notre Dame.

Still, UD pretty much relying on their exclusive NHL deal now. Maybe they'll pick up NASCAR.
