Official 2014-15 NBA Regular Season Thread

yeah maybe? 25 mins/game? Not sure if that will even be a help, I haven't seen the Parker injury video yet AND it still happens to players of all kinds but it just made me think about the transition from NCAA schedule to NBA.

We see it time and time again, but the MAJORITY of rookies make it through the season without a serious injury. Hopefully we don't see anymore this season.

This years rooks to miss significant amount of games for various injury related reasons:
Joel Embiid
Marcus Smart
Julius Randle
Jabari Parker

Last year:
Otto Porter (missed first 18 games)
Nerlens Noel
Alex Len (played 10 minutes total from Nov 3 to Jan 7)
Shane Larkin
CJ McCollum

Year before that:
Drummond (Stress Fracture in Back)
Bradley Beal (wrist)

I think it happens to all rookie classes, even the great James Worthy missed his entire rookie year with an injury not to different to Randle's. So whilst it sucks, it shouldn't limit their ceilings.

Just one more reason to look forward to next season I suppose, but in the mean time - should we just hand Wiggins ROY?

I was about to lay some serious coin on Jabari Parker winning the ROY when he went down. Phew! Wiggins should be ROY unless some freak accident happens..

Aaron Gordon as well went down for probably a good chunk of the season ! he actually looked probably the most NBA ready (blake griffin style hustle but not as dominant). I think a limit restriction wouldn't be so bad actually @ozballer23

Just read that theres actually 7 of the top 11 draft picks out for a big chuck of the year or all of it.

2nd pick Parker - ACL
3rd pick Embiid - Foot
4th pick Gordon - Foot
6th pick Smart - Achilles
7th pick Randle - Tibia
9th pick Vonleh - Back
11th pick McDermott - Knee

The NBA could try limiting their minutes but really isnt that the teams problem? If u are going to overplay your start draft pick then its on you as a team. I think this has just been a very unlucky year rookie wise. In saying that, theres probably been more injuries to star players (Kobe, Westbrook, Durant, Rose etc.)in the last 1-2 years than i can remember so is it really a rookie thing or just bad luck all the way round?

I disagree that the extended minutes are causing them injuries. Parker just had a freak accident. Wiggins and Nobel are leading the rookies in minutes and that's at 30 mins even and they are doing fine.

How hard the injury bug has bitten each team since 2005-06.

I have some more in depth information which I'll post shortly.

Despite some noticeable injuries including Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant and Chicago’s Derrick Rose, the first quarter of the 2014-15 NBA season saw a dip in injury rates compared to last year’s record breaking numbers. The games lost to injury last season were the highest total since the league adopted the inactive list prior to the 2005-06 season. However through each team’s first 20 games, the league is on pace to finish this year’s season with nearly 500 fewer games lost.

The 30 teams combined to lose 1088 games to injury and illness with a collective cost just over $72 million in lost salary. The Memphis Grizzlies and the Brooklyn Nets tied for the fewest games lost to injury with just nine games forfeited. Memphis’ total is particularly impressive as a viral illness ravaged the team in in mid-November. The Clippers lost the fewest dollars to injury in the league, a sign that the first impact of the new ownership may be felt in the athletic training room. After years of being handcuffed by the frugal Donald Sterling, the medical staff received a boost from new owner Steve Ballmer in the form of biometric screening. It may be too early to tell if that’s the primary reason the majority of the Clippers rotation has avoided injury but the initial success appears promising.

The two teams most decimated by injury, the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder, are in a bit of unfamiliar territory after years of good health. During the 2012-13 campaign the Thunder lost just 26 games to injury all season but has already quadrupled that total. Durant, along with Russell Westbrook, Perry Jones, Mitch McGary, and Grant Jerrett, all missed significant stretches to start the season with an assortment of injuries. Fortunately the team appears to have turned a corner and has been a full strength for five consecutive outings.

The Pacers knew they would struggle with injuries when Paul George fractured his leg but no one in the organization could have predicted the cascade of injuries that would follow. In addition to George, David West (sprained ankle), George Hill (quad tendon tear), and CJ Watson (foot contusion) all missed at least 15 games. Collectively the team has lost 88 games and $9.6 million in salary, totals higher than three of their last four seasons.

While the Pacers and Thunder have shown signs of improvement, the same can’t be said for the Lakers. The team has already lost three players to season-ending injuries, insuring a high injury total for the third straight season. Veteran point guard Steve Nash was ruled out for the year before the season even started and promising rookie Julius Randle fractured his leg in his professional debut. Xavier Henry joined the list when he ruptured his Achilles in practice. All three injuries were difficult to prevent but it’s worth wondering where the team would be if they had retained Alex McKechnie. McKechnie spent eight seasons as the team’s athletic performance coordinator and was lauded for his work with preventative care and movement integration. The Lakers opted not to renew his contract in the summer of 2011 and the team has since been decimated by injury. McKechnie has subsequently taken over as the Director of Sports Science for the Raptors and helped turn their medical staff into one of the most successful in the league.

League-wide lower extremity issues had the biggest impact, accounting for over 70 percent of the games lost. Injuries to the muscles of the legs, including the hamstrings, quadriceps, groin and calf, were the biggest issue with ankle sprains a close second. The number of injuries drops as you move up the body though five players have already been placed in the league-mandated concussion protocol.

12 players missed their team’s first 20 games nursing injuries. The list is comprised of Boston’s Vitor Faverani (knee), Detroit’s Jodie Meeks (back), Indiana’s Paul George (leg) and George Hill (quadriceps), Los Angeles’ Steve Nash (back), Milwaukee’s Damien Inglis (ankle) and Johnny O’Bryant (knee), New York’s Andrea Bargnani (leg), Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid (foot) and Jason Richardson (knee and foot), San Antonio’s Patty Mills (shoulder), and Washington’s Martell Webster (back). Meeks and O’Bryant have since returned but the others remain on uncertain timetables.

The first quarter of the NBA season was one of the most compelling in recent memory. The Eastern Conference remains wide open while the competition in the West is fierce. As the league heads to the midway point of the season, the margin of error for teams remains minimal and medical staffs around the NBA will become an even more important part of keeping their franchise’s playoff aspirations afloat.

WARRIORS’ BOGUT OUT INDEFINITELY

It’s been a rough week (relatively speaking) for the Golden State Warriors. On Tuesday, their 16-game winning streak came to an end. And on Thursday, they announced that centerAndrew Bogut would be out indefinitely after undergoing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy on his right knee.

The Warriors set no timetable for Bogut’s return. Bauman compared the Bogut situation to Houston’s Dwight Howard, who missed a little more than three weeks after receiving platelet-rich plasma therapy on his strained right knee. "Thank God it’s nothing major,” said agent David Bauman, whose Relativity Sports agency also represents Howard. “It’s a temporary setback. I’m not going to say two, three, four weeks, but that’s probably a reasonable assumption if all goes well, and then he’ll return sometime in January.” Contra Costa Times - See more at: http://hoopshype.com/rumors.htm#sthash.rH6ufCpE.dpuf

Boo on the Bogut situation as I traded for him in my fantasy league a couple weeks ago..

Yay on the Rondo trade for Dallas. For essentially no 'assets', we sure have done well in picking up players in the last 4-5 months. Chandler, Parsons and Rondo for expendable pieces. #winning

I think Jameer will fit nicely in Boston. A good trade overall, as much as I would've like to see Rondo in a Lakers uniform, DAL threw them the better deal, there is now talk that LA is in heavy talks trying to get Deron from Brooklyn.

Rondo to Mavs would bring lots of excitement to the team.. Cuban has always been someone who takes chances and gets big names to Dallas.

Its Official hes going to the Mavs, they look hella scary atm. Ellis,Dirkgod,Parsons as their scorers from Rondo who now does not have to take more than a few shots per game.
God dam

Deal :
Boston would receive forwards Brandan Wright and Jae Crowder, point guard Jameer Nelson, a first-round draft pick and a second-round draft pick, Stein reported. Other players could be included in the deal, which is expected to be finalized Thursday night.
Mavs get Rondo
