In light of the budget and continual discussion about prices for families to go to footy etc, the NRL, in conjunction with the clubs, should make ALL tickets in a designated zones/bays behind the goal posts at all grounds $1.

That's right…ONE DOLLAR!

There slogan could be :

We'll help make ends meet so come and meet at the ends!

And hire drinks and food sellers to walk up and down the aisles and make them feel special and all that jazz.

If people don't come in droves, we know it's not ticket prices.

Just a thought.

Ryan Tandy betting saga: Time for NRL et al to square the ledger

Rugby league is awash with campaigns, agendas and grudges. You know that.
So when the NRL’s head of football, Todd Greenberg, was mentioned in the 7.30 Report last week in relation to Ryan Tandy and allegations the then-Canterbury CEO knew about the late prop’s betting on NRL games, this reporter felt that maelstrom beckoning strongly.

I was expected to say what you expect me to say, to be a dog that digs up its favourite bone.

This column is not about me. It’s about rugby league, Todd Greenberg and you. But I have to mention myself briefly to provide some background. Last year I was disillusioned enough about Greenberg’s handling of Ben Barba’s suspension, and his subsequent employment at the NRL, to quit chasing rugby league news – aside from at games – after 28 years of doing so.

I felt the truth had been a victim in the whole affair, and that disregard for it had effectively now become institutionalised in the game’s administration. I’ve no desire to rake over those coals again. Yes, the central events last year were intensely personal and delicate but the devil is in the detail that you can easily read about by hitting Google News.

Now we have a written ledger which John Schell, who is a friend of mine, says he showed to Greenberg in 2010 and which documented the tragic Tandy betting on NRL games, which was clearly in contravention of NRL guidelines. Greenberg told the 730 Report he did not know about these wagers.

It’s easy to say Greenberg should have seen the football bets alongside the racing ones, and should have told the NRL immediately. It’s equally easy to say that Schell, even though not employed at the time as a journalist, knew he was facilitating improper activity and – ethically – should have felt inclined to write about it.

The real issue here is Greenberg denying the occurrence to the ABC. We have since seen reports that suggest Greenberg’s oft-repeated account of Canterbury’s approach to Manly coach Des Hasler does not tally with the chain of events as recorded by others.
This raises another question: is being a club official now so full of intrigue that no-one could get a job at headquarters without multiple skeletons eventually tumbling out of a Moore Park closet? Are club officials doomed to backstab each other while career administrators attempt to mediate from ivory towers? I didn’t want to do here what is expected of me: hound and whinge about this one man. Last September, I let go of it all. I realised that my core belief in a straight answer for a straight question was hopelessly outmoded and naive. I’m happier, if poorer, as a result.

As rugby league fans, you don’t seem to expect honest answers. You don’t particularly care if reporters are told the odd fib. I have never cared about the federal budget, either. I never cared who won an election. This year, though, the budget is costing people in my industry their jobs and closing down employers. In rugby league, as in politics, apathy gives us the leaders we deserve.

I really admire Steve Mascord. He has a RL heart; the pulse of an excitable fan wanting so much more for his cherished game. He pushes a barrow that is often seen as unpalatable or scorned upon with a 'who gives a shit'…but if we did these things, the game would be oh so much better. There aren't many sportswriters in this country, because, as my father-in-law said to me once: "no one really gives a toss as long as their team wins on the weekend. The peripheral shit - it's just paper talk. Muck raking; fluff. Give me 80 minutes of footy and bugger the rest!" He's right, and Steve Mascord is right. No one particularly cares. Read it at smoko, become incensed for a few moments, get back to life.

I have no axe to grind against Mr Greenberg. I do find it interesting about the things that seem to be cropping about about him in media I do actually read (not Buzz or Kent or Bec). RL has always done it's best to bash itself senseless and still comes out trumps. AFL was going to kill it. A-League was going to kill it. Super 15 was going to kill it. Hell, they even had a Super League war to try and kill themselves. But the game carries on, bigger, better, stronger despite itself.

So if Steve Mascord says there might be something iffy there, I move uneasily on my seat and sit up and wonder. I'd like to be someone who doesn't care, but so many things irk me about the NRL and the way it is run, the way it is merchandised, the way it isn't as great as it really could be. Todd Greenberg was seen as the future of the game in administration; I had faith in him. I don't want to end up disappointed if he is like so many admin types of the past.

Sigh.

I need to get off my butter box. Sorry peeps.

Im not sure what Todd got up to at the bulldogs, But he did a great job at rebuilding and getting the publics confidence back for the dogs, In reference to the final paragraph above, I dont expect honesty from anyone in the game, Especially NOT THE MEDIA. And i find that its the MEDIA who more often than not tell the odd fib,

And PLEASE dont go on about the budget costing YOUR industry jobs, It will cost many thousands of jobs through out Australia, just as the internet has for people in my industry and around the world.

Ramble over!

Announced on radio that Matthew Allwood has signed with the Warriors. An odd signing, caught many on the Warriors forum by surprise if true

I knew Souths were keen on him but had no idea the warriors were circling. Another raiders junior flying the coup although he has only been solid at best this year but in a team that is struggling it is hard to get quality ball. I think he is a good prospect though

Thanks for your info on him.

It's just dawned on me that Andrew McFadden would have coached him for a couple of years in the U20s. I'm feeling optimistic about him now, Cappy McFadden seems quite astute. We've had a situation in the last couple of years where all the pissed off Warrior's players have run off to be with Ivan Cleary; let's hope for the Raider's sake that 'Wrecking Ball' Ricky doesn't get in the face of too many of the juniors

Allwood has been dropped for this week but I think that would have been prior to him signing with NZ. I recall him being above average in u/20's but he really came if age in nsw cup late last year. As I mentioned hard to gauge how good he is in a struggling side but I think he has plenty of speed and if he gets early ball he will be good, disappointed to lose him. Defensively he seemed quite good as well however like every other raider he was poor the last 2 weeks.

I just read that the Raiders are favoured to get Proctor now and that he will sign up next week, talking to Tedesco and Mansour also

Allwood might be good with ball in hand but some of his defence lately would worry me if he cant correct that he's not a good buy.

Mansour and Tedesco would be good buys for any club, but surely Tigers will throw plenty at Tedsco.
