Mate, wasn't having a go at you at all. And I wasn't up tight at all.
Back then, people sniggered at Backdoor Benny because of innuendo, or the like. Putting someone down in the world of footy for being a poof was like calling someone weak, not up to it. But things have changed…a lot since Elias was playing.
The NRL and society have made big strides. I think it's kinda sad that a kid under 20 in this day and age seems to think it's ok to be homophobic. Does it make him more of a man? Who knows? It says more about him and the people he associates with if they think it's ok.
Anyway, each to their own.

I still think it was ironic that his nephew made the comment, and 20 years ago couldn't believe it when I was told that Roberts batted for the other team, even if they do come out I'm not going to respect them any less, I played with a few blokes and a few against that we had suspicions about, but if you're going to play a game like ours you have to have a bit of a 'ticker'.
Hearing that Ryan Hoffman has taken up a 3 year contract at the Warriors. Plus an interview where Isaac Luke personally stated he is hoping to get the opportunity to play at the Warriors in the future. He said it would depend on his situation at Souths and his wife!
Benny wasn't called "backdoor" because of any homosexual tendency.........there was an incident he may or may not have been involved in allegedly with Steve Martin and a woman.

To play devils advocate a touch, firstly the guy supposedly slurred by this homophobic comment isn't gay. I am against the offensive nature of the whole thing, the "c" word on national TV is a problem to me, don't get me wrong, his timing was poor and he deserves to be punished but he was just angry and it could have been his brother in front of him and he would have also called him the same thing, I don't really believe it was a conscious decision to slander the gay community.
Not sure how many of you have teenage sons but mine and his mates are often heard to be calling each other "gay" and none of them are homophobic it is an expression they use not in that context e.g;
A: The teacher wouldn't let me finish my test.
B: Well that's gay.
A: My dad wont let me go out tonight,.
B: Ugh, that's gay.
A: My brother took my favorite jeans.
B: That's gay
Anyway just putting it out there.

I was a teenager in the late 80's / early 90's.
The same phrase, using 'that's gay' for 'that's crap / that's bad' was in use back then too.
I thought it had fallen out of fashion. I have a 38 year old mate who still uses it because he's a dinosaur. Our gay mate thinks it's funny; his partner does not.
I'm not here to make moral judgments but it's a slur that has been put out to pasture no matter the context. And considering the NRL is trying to keep it out of the game and U20s get plenty of 'education', I'm surprised it got used. But they say footy players aren't always too bright.

Yeah. I use that. I also like to use old school Australian colloquialisms to befuddle people.
It's just another beat-up by "holier than thou" media cranks. Bastions of social righteousness, they love telling us all about standards of behaviour and the role of the role model in all facets of life. They love honing in on those amongst us that are to be scorned for the simplest infractions and in need of counselling in some form or another. YAAAAWWNNNN............

If it's good enough for Mitchell Johnson, Harry Kewell, Lauren Jackson, Ryan Harris, ADP, Nate Myles and Paul Gallen to think it's good enough not to do it, then I think it's good enough for the an U20's player not to do it.

It's funny how in a different era if you were a gay blade you were quite the man around town, it was a very slow weekend for news regarding footy and that's why it became such big news until the Packer V Gyngell slugfest, at least it's a different Packer to the incarcerated one, plus because of Mitchell's suspension he has missed out on making his first grade debut, he'll be waiting a lot longer now.
In regards to the Steve Martin/Benny Elias/Other Woman incident it occurred in Tamworth where Martin was coaching at the time and Elias visited his old mate, it was said at the time that the Dragons were on the verge of signing him and playing him at Lock forward as they had been waiting for the next Raper for nearly 20 years.

I think we are in complete agreement that there's no place for homophobia, not just in sport but society as a whole.
The penalty handed out was swift, adequate and re-enforced this message. Well done to the NRLMy point was really aimed at provoking comment rather than just accepting the lynch mob mentality generated by the media beat up. IMO political correctness has gone mad in too many cases and is sensationalised just to get a headline rather than considering context. I work with numerous gay people and it's not unusual for them to call other gays and even straight people "faggots" yet this is OK the standards are blurred and confused.
As for Gallen and Myles well perhaps they're not the two greatest examples of people who should be taking moral high ground.

Amazing money being thrown about, you'd be mad not to take it even though they don't have a coach.
The Warriors seem to get a lot of misrepresentation in Aussie media. It is always mentioned that they pay massive overs for players and are broke. These figures are often grossly exaggerated and the last two coaches have both stated to NZ media that in fact the Warriors are comfortably under the cap with money to spend, they just struggle to attract players to spend it on. That leaves them paying more than someone is worth for sub-par players like Nielsen, Lowrie etc. The benefit of that is that it never leaves them in a position where they have to unload talent.
As far as the coach goes, from all accounts McFadden is very popular and his skills were a big part of the player revolt against Elliott. Hoffman said in his interview that he was a big part of the reason he signed for the Warriors and from what I've heard he is heavily favoured to get a long term contract, which is something that I like. Adam Mogg has just been named his assistant and I believe that the role that is being looked at for next year is a football directors roll for the likes of someone like Sheens
In terms of 1.6 million being a lot of money; yes it is, but not as much as it appears due to the rising salary cap. I have no problem with that cash given the qualities that Hoffman brings are the qualities the Warriors lack (apart from playing position). I find it hard to digest these big figures these days, but:
In 2010 the salary cap was 4.1 million
In 2015 the salary cap is 6.55 million
Hoffman's salary for next year is supposedly $533k a season, as a percentage of the cap that would be the equivalent of what in 2010? mid 300k? Doesn't seem outrageous money to me. Especially with the changes to the long serving allowance, which the Warriors can take full advantage of.
Don't be surprised to see further Warriors signings with the new changes in culture being implemented. Also expect to see players with a poor work ethic/lack of professionalism being forced out in the coming months - Locke is already gone, I can't see Mateo lasting until his contract ends.
