NBA Trade Rumours/Deadline

I disagree if you can get Kevin Love GET HIM.

When he wants to go there anyway as a FA?

No way you give up a top 5 pick (likely) from next year for an injury prone guy that's not known for winning. I rate Love so highly, but no. I doubt the Lakers do that deal.

If Love wants to come to LAL, it's doubtful he'll bolt as a FA. I'd grab him; a blue chip rookie would be great but as they've signed Kobe for another two years they'll want to compete and having Kobe, Love and someone for Nash's expiring/retired player contract means they'll at least make the playoffs.

For T-Wolves it means a reset but Rubio is still young and Pek isn't old either. And it's better than him just bolting.

What he said!

Fair call, Minnesota should definitely take that deal if Kobe would give up Gasol and a 1st rounder.

I would like to see Love as a Laker. Stick a defensive Centre next to him to help out and the Lakers are back.

A low end trade that could mean the lakers getting below the salary cap. It was widely reported that if the Lakers moved Gasol for Okafor we were less than $2m away from the Salary cap, so this could be a sign that there may be something else brewing in the background. Marshon stays on the books next season for only $600k, while Bazemore becomes a FA this summer. I think for that price his untapped potential could be worth a shot.

What's plan if they get under the cap? (legitimate question)

I can't see them really doing anything to be honest, apart from it means they are no longer destined for the repeater tax (franchises that are over the salary cap for 3 of 5 years or more must pay their taxes to the league at a much higher rate than those who are over it for only the first or second time). And whilst I know it's the Lakers, and we have the billion dollar time warner deal behind us, but I guess it means if nothing else it's going to be possibly 5 more years before they have to worry about the heavy tax implications of any deal again.

Hmmm. Okay.

I would have thought, having re-signed Kobe that LAL would be pushing to compete to the complete and utter detriment of the future (hence my comments RE Love before) rather than worry about money.

But thanks for your thoughts.

Oh, don't get me wrong however as love said today "wolves are a better team than the lakers". If this is the case, why would a free agent want to come to a bad situation? Ideally, wipe the books clean, Kobe + Top 5 Rookie + free agent - Tax implications = fast rebuild. One thing I didn't mention is that being in the repeater tax means you don't have the Mid Level Exception available to it's full amount to sign players, nor can you take on any extra salary in a trade so having this status makes it incredibly difficult for the Lakers to make a quick rebuild.

If the Lakers did trade Pau and their 1st rounder for Love, they could still get under and avoid the repeater tax.

I still think they don't trade their 1st rounder anyways. When the Lakers have gotten a good pick, they've ended up with a great player.

If they got Love, they could make the playoffs sure, but not much else. A top rookie may see them make the playoffs for the next 10 years if they hit a D. Wade type player.

Agree, I'd rather move Pau for a mid first round draft pick and cap relief in aid of free agency flexibility. Getting a superstar in the making for 10 years or more and add a top level free agent (this summer or next) I think is the way to go.
