so how does basketball releases go? Imean i've seen the 13-14 panini hoops but when i tried looking at the 12-13 release a whole heap of other sets showed up. Can I ask what all this is and if I was a strapped for cash new collector which set should i be looking for? Is the hoops set good or will better sets be released for this season? Thanks everyone

so how does basketball releases go?

They come out every season to match the calendar of the NBA regular season (well, they try to).

Check out this link here for products for 13-14 http://www.dacardworld.com/sports-cards/2013-14-basketball-cards You will see releases which are coming out shortly as well.

You could probably purchase some 12-13 boxes or 11-12 boxes on the cheap as they are now less desirable (avoid 11-12 due to lack of rookie cards).

12-13 cards can be found here, boxes: http://www.dacardworld.com/sports-cards/2012-13-basketball-cards

Crusade, Elite, Innovation, Past and Present should give you a bit of fun, a few autos and game used and won't bust the bank balance.

I would avoid hoops for now in 13-14, they will come down in price over time. Best to get some mid-end products from last year which have dropped in price with some nice RC's.

That, or just buy the cards you want here on OzCT! Boxes are boom or bust!

ok, so what set do you suggest out of previous years then?

"Crusade, Elite, Innovation, Past and Present should give you a bit of fun, a few autos and game used and won't bust the bank balance." They are previous year 12-13

Crusade will give you nice shiny parallel cards which people like chasing
Innovation will give you one pack per box and you will get 2-3 autos and 2-3 jersey cards.
Past and Present will give you common cards and a set chase with a few entry level inserts with autos/jersey
Elite is a step up before you start getting into higher end, usual suspects of parallels, jersey and autos.

Good luck

Thanks mate :) hope to see you around the forums again :) You have been very helpful!

If you're shopping on a budget, products like Hoops, Panini, Brilliance and past and present are a good start. But try and stick with hobby boxes - retail is known for shocking colation (set building) ... so I suppose that means stay away from Past and present as I think that's a retail only product.

I didn't like the look of the crusade set and the past and present set just doesn't take my fancy, honestly the elite set seems to take my fancy the most but you said that set was high end. Innovation looked pretty but I don't know whether it was my piece of cake. Previously i have collected the nrl 2008 select champions set and it looked so professional and polished

Don't have to collect a recent set if your not busting boxes. Plenty of awesome looking sets over the years, it will be just a bit of research around the place as people can suggest all they like, but its your taste at the end of the day.

Maybe if you let us know what you are after as in budget, set size, auto, jsy, inserts?

My advice is work within your expected budget. As soon as you start taking a liking to cards, (not sure what your personality is) I tend to get obsessive about collecting and then the budget gets blown away.

Check out all the stuff that is for sale in the basketball sell/trade and find something you like, PM them and ask what products it came from.

I'd love to do my collecting on this site, you's are a great bunch of people but it doesn't give me the same excitement of busting open packs :/ even worse i don't think there is a local retailer that will deal them, does anyone know of a cheap online retailer?

For Australia there's heaps. There is even guys in this forum that sell boxes. Take a look in the for sale thread and you might find some listings.
