So I saw an ebay listing for a Jordan Rookie the other day, which straight away to me looked fake. I compared to my genuine BGS graded copy and sure enough, it looks nothing like it.

I contacted the seller and here is the conversation (sorry it's a little wordy):

Me:
Hi,
just wondering if the jordan rookie card is authentic 1986 rookie or a reprint?
Thanks.

Reply:
I have had several people look at it including a sports shop and they say
Its ggenuineand if I were to get it graded
It would be worth alot more but to grade
You have to send it away for a month
And im not prepared to do that just in case
It gets damage

Me:
Thanks.

Well, I have a genuine graded Jordan rookie and I can tell you that yours most certainly isn't real. It has a completely different font on the back of the card for his name for starters. There are several other big differences too. So if you were wondering, it's a reprint.

Not trying to be a smart ass or anything, just interested in how people come about these cards and who tells them they are real.

Reply:
You serious I payed $375 for it from ebay as it was listed
as an original and the guy said it was an original
And the people I showed said it was

Me:
Yeah it happens all the time. I mean you're listing it thinking it's original, so the guy you bought it from was doing the same thing really.

Have a look at the font on the back of a genuine card:

See the spacing in the letters of his name (and the font itself).

What should I do should I take to a professional to check it out
The guy I bought it from said it was an original what can I do

Me:
Well a professional would confirm it to be a fake/reprint, unless they are just a sports store and not a card expert. If you held it side by side with a genuine jordan rookie the differences would be obvious. Even the colours would be different.

If it were me I would approach the guy who sold it to you (if he promised you it was genuine) and ask for a refund. He will probably claim that he thought it was real, so it won't be easy.

Best of luck...

3 Days later...

He ends the Ebay listing. I figure he made the right call, faith in humanity restored.

But no, he relists it, starting at $100, with the exact same description, no mention of it being a reprint or possible fake. He's listed it as a legit Jordan rookie.

Here's the listing.

It baffles me how some people can sleep at night having spent their waking hours actively trying to steal other people's hard earned money.

End rant.

Don't you hate dodgy tactics? Sure enough it probably stings getting burned like that but he should really take some ownership of the fact that he spent $375 on something he didn't research and obviously had very little knowledge of and take it as a costly learning curb. Trying to pass it on to some else is the poor form.

Yeah the fact that his original listing (which he cancelled after I informed him of it being fake) didn't have a Buy It Now option at all, and was up to 2 bids at $200 - and now his NEW listing has a Buy It Now of $1500 just confirms what an absolute scumbag the guy is.

If you get ripped off for $375 for buying a fake, ungraded jordan rookie, it's because you're an idiot. Trying to then turn it into profit at someone else's expense is disgraceful.

I reported the listing and sent him a friendly message :)

I can see what you were trying to do in having the seller withdraw the card from auction but really you were just wasting your time as it is just human nature to want and get your money back.

He probably knows it is a fake but no way will he let that on
