PSA versus Beckett grading. Anyone got any comments??? Advantages or disadvantages??

I've purchased the odd graded card off Ebay. Has anyone come across so-called "forged" grading ... looking at the one below, for example, it really wouldn't be that hard. Is there anyway to know that it has been authentically graded??

Depends on what you collect. There are pros and cons for each grading service.

BCCG is not worth getting at all though and isnt' taken seriously in the hobby at all.

I don't know what you mean but Authentic graded though? You mean graded cards that are the real thing??

Can you elaborate on your comments, abit, Chad?

What I meant is have you seen/heard of people getting clever and banging their card into a case and creating the little slip of paper in the top with a 10 grading?? ie. has it really been graded? (I'm quite sceptical of ebay-ers these days).

Nah mate that makes it pretty obvious its been tampered with. Pretty hard to get away with and I have't seen it done. I've heard of cards been switched with fakes but rarely if rarely have heard about it.

I wouldn't worry too much about it as I and others have been buying graded cards for years with no problem at all. I just would avoid the dodgey grading companies thats all. BCCG included.

Another rookie question, why is BCCG dodgy, is there a thread on this (who is good vs who is bad?)

BCCG is the cheap arm of BGS who are scumbags anyway. BGS are good if you buy already graded but I wouldnt' recomend grading your own cards with them.

BCCG basically just glance at a card. They are aimed at the kiddie market really. A BCCG 9 is equal to a psa 7 or so. You can knock 2 points off any BCCG grade really.

Take a look at this getting 7 just to show you how bad they really are.

As far as grading co's go its.

PSA, BGS, SGC and GAI with the best reputation. Those are the big four in the hobby and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one but ALWAYS look at the card as well not only the grade.

I wouldn't touch anything else unless its hobby specific like with CSA, SCD etc for Star co.

Isnt the BCCG for the Collector's Club or something of Beckett?

Them and GEM Mint are'nt reliable for TRUE grades in my opinion.

I sent some cards away for grading with BGS last year and was extremely pleased with the end results on 99.9% of the cards submitted.

I chose the cheapest option and it took almost three months from the time i sent the cards to the time I got them back. In my opinion it was worth the wait. Especially when this came back

I know there are couple members here who prefer PSA over BGS. I chose BGS because there was no need to pay any joining fees.

In the end as Chad says stick with the known companies and you should be right

Aesthetically, postgsl's Iverson looks very nice, as well if you were displaying it (speaking of which, I have my picture framer on the job at the moment if anyone was following the thread about eight weeks ago - will post a pic when it is complete). Those BCCG-graded cards look butt-ugly.

i don't own much grading cards, but i think beckett is cheesy.... i mean, i don't like they way they approach for marketing, dunno much about grading anyway.


whenever i read, beckett basketball magazine, they will say, psa grading didn't boost up the sales, or whatever.. i think BGS and PSA are both respectable companies...

the funny thing, i don't like grading.. it's a way to preserve the card i accept, but things should grow old as they are going to be.. once it's ultrasonic seal, the card is actually stuck in time... grading will never make vintage cards, they are just preserved cards to me, not vintage cards to me in next 50 yrs...

Vintage cards are vintage because they are old not dinged up ;-D

Vintage is mostly judged by the same grading rules as modern cards.

yes, i mean, let's say auctioning Rudy Gay BGS Prestine in 2067 Rookie UD SP GU..
it will still be solid new.... i don't get the feeling for vintage at that moment, very possible, i will be already dead in 2067

I've got vintage in psa 9 form so is it not vintage because its in too good as condition?

well, PSA9, it's very well-maintained.. and of course vintage, coz last 10 years ago, we don't have grading cards... coz i don't see any antiques that are ultrasonic sealed at any antique shops.. it's not that i am against with grading cards.. i just don't feel the preservations.. things are meant to be old and of course meant to change.... that's just my thoughts...
