ESP Limited Edition 2013 (Info Updated 04/10/13)

Girds the same thing happens at this time every year whether it be NRL or AFL or Select or ESP. Sellers jump on ebay and dump cards to cash up which drives the prices down. I could pull up a few threads right now of the exact same thing happening here.

That's hardly ESP fault??

I don't know about that. Part of the joy of collecting league cards for me is the carrot of set completion. With so many releases that becomes unachievable for most collectors. I think there is a danger that if something seems unobtainable, people will lose the will to try.

6 releases seems like overkill to me.

I really think they need to manage the rrp of the Traders set better too - it is a very expensive product for a low end mass market release.

Overall I'm still relatively happy with the product they are releasing, but they are still not communicating with their customers, which shows a lack of fidelity towards collectors.

LS sig prices will stabilise. It seems like they totally flooded the market with sig cards in this release because of the numbers of different sig cards (36). But they are short-printed compared to Select releases. There were similar or far more sigs issued in all Select mid year releases by my count.

I like the thought of what you have here the only thing I would change is NRL Traders early March and power play for February.
 
Like i said to @Matt26 on Sunday at Penrith, they could put bars of gold into card packets and you lot would still whinge. :crazy:

They have done some good and bad over their first 12 months but im not going to kill them just yet. I was very happy with Elite this year - i was much more fun than busting the same old stuff year in and year out from Select.

ill admit select had a bit of a dry run at times but they saved some of their best till last with dynasty, and the centenary set is the best thing ever produced as far as im concerned.

serious question though ? do you think the cards esp are designing are up to scratch design wise? surely im not the only one who thinks they are second rate?

i mean the aussie rep set, is a gold foiled traders base card. Like seriously?
 
Also just on the current market value of NRL cards, particularly the Elite LS I think they are seriously under valued but that is just the market in general at the moment for all NRL cards.

Look at the Centenary TOTCFS? I had rarely seen these go for less that $35 each, always over $40 for the better ones like Lewis and Johns however in the last 4 months I have hardly seen one go over $30 and most have gone for between $20-$25.
 
I'll chip in with my own thoughts, from an AFL collector POV.

It's been a pretty boring few years collecting wise. The last series I was really interested and invested in, was 2012 Draft Prospects. This series was great in terms of variety of inserts, value for money, dual/triple signature cards, guernsey cards. Of course, Select put their foot down, once they released how popular this series was once it sold out and generated heaps of interest in the off-season. They came out with Future Force, which has some great inserts (ie Gold sigs), but still lacks any other decent low numbered insert. Even the Premiership Commemorative Folder they released in conjunction with the Prime series, was an idea generated by members from AFLTCC. Select lack in imagination and ideas sorely.

The way I look at it, at least ESP is introducing new things for the NRL market. I believe they had jersey sig cards in one of the NRL releases last year (?), have made available the #001 cards from some series & actively attend and sponsor card shows. I just don't see this from what Select offers to AFL collectors. They keep all the #001s (which I haven't heard of any other card company doing so), have never seen them attend or sponsor any card shows, & say guernsey cards aren't popular and/or are too difficult to produce. The last point is hard to believe, since if a company like Footycards & ESP can produce guernsey type cards, then why can't Select? Also, if they are going to release those awful club logo patches from Eternity 2012, with the sticker logos, then they can definitely put a little bit more effort in.

ESP at least are better in marketing their product & attempting to listen to collectors. I've read that many of you have been frustrated by the last point, but how many of you see a representative from Select engaging in dialogue with forum members?

the ESP jersey cards werent worn, which made them just stupid. the problem is getting game worn ones, thats what they have the difficulty with.

theres so many ways you can look at the topic, and everything you said was right, but you failed to mention a few of their stupid mistakes.

1. they held back #1's and as a result of backlash and pissed of collectors, there going to release them, because collectors were under the impression they were around in the first place

2. like tak mentioned earlier they try to control and manipulate prices.

3. i think this pissed me off more than most, but that fact there was about 4 different styles of markers on the sigs in the elite set..

4. werent replacing alot of damaged cards. i think i remember a thread on here were people were waiting 4 months for replacements if they got them back.

5. and probably most importantly cards generally look like shit. in terms of design

Fair enough. I don't collect NRL cards, but just providing perception from an AFL collector's view. I did bust a box of Elite earlier this year and thought that they could have used the same marker for all sigs, #bered the triple threats & case card, and put some foiling on the triple threats.

My main concern with Select is the lack of ideas/inserts in their last few AFL releases. This year's series 2 case hits were numbered out of #/200 & #/300, which I found ridiculous! There's no reason case hits can be more limited (#50, #100 or even #150) or incorporate better designs such as the gold sigs from Future Force.

I didn't even bother touching this year's champions. Just have a look at some of the card designs and you'll see why :rolleyes:

I think you'll find that ESP & Select have a mutual relationship. Hence why some of the AFL ESP managed players have started to come out with more signature cards, than previously.
 
If people now say they thought Elite was 'rubbish', 'poorly designed' and the subject of price manipulation, why did you all buy so much of it when it came out?

and in regards to this post, they did their dodgy business after the dealers like digeze had already put there orders in, so if i reneged on my order with digeze it wouldnt be fair on him would it? and i sold off my whole case only keeping the triple threats.

anyone this will be my last comment on the matter, esp have turned me off cards all together, game worn jerseys are the way to go.

Just would be good to be aware of it all when the auction goes to air..
