I have been reading through the growing list of disappointing box breaks on the net regarding the latest release of Fleer 06/07, and it got me thinking about how many collectors have veiwed this release.
Sure Upper Deck has screwed people big time over the Fleer buyback fiasco, and they failed to deliver on the main selling point of one 86/87 Fleer buyback card per box.
But my question is, if you were to take the Fleer buybacks out of the Fleer 06/07 release (including the Jordan signed rookie/s) how many people would have rushed out to bust boxes and cases of this product?
How many people here would be happy to bust a box at roughly $85- $100 AUD/box knowing that the best cards you could get were lots of nice base cards and un-numbered inserts, a jersey card and the chance at pulling an autographics card?
I feel that many people (apart from the Fleer faithful and traditional collectors) would have moved on to other products.
Sure, Fleer is/was one of the iconic brands of our time and Buybacks aside, most of the boxes have yielded many nice cards.
Collectable cards? Very much so. Valuable cards? Probably not.
One of the big aspects of this years release that has been lost on a lot of people breaking this product is that the fact that Fleer has always been a mid to low range product.
If you bust a box of Fleer this year, keeping in mind this fact, you will probably enjoy your break, and if you get a decent Fleer buyback card, it will make it that much sweeter.
