I purchased a card from Ebay US recently. I received the invoice for the card this morning and went to pay only to realise that the seller was trying to charge me $20US for postage. It will be sent registered...but still $20

SHIPPING OVERSEAS WILL BE EXTRA PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH COUNTRY AND I WILL CHECK WITH USPS....OVER SEAS WILL BE SENT ONLY REGISTER MAIL COST IS FROM 15 TO 25 DOLLARS
This was listed in his auction in the "sellers payment instrucitons" not in the body of text and i missed it.

With this listed, does it give me a right to argue the point/complain to ebay about the insanley high postage costs??

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

If the postage costs were clear at the start of the auction, then you don't have much of a chance of getting it lowered. But registered post (express) from the US can cost $20.

if he told you the postage was going to be that high, you dont really have a leg to stand on...

id still try and argue him down to a reasonable price though.

Same- I won a card for $5us and the guy wanted to charge $25us! I told him to keep the card and strike me- he then said he would do it for $8- so i got it, it was still to high but worth it for the card!

I suggest you look at the UPS website, there have a calculator somewhere on there that allows you to put the sellers region and your own in and it will give you different shipping prices including registered.

After a bit more investigation...i found out that Ev (nvd001) bought something from him only 2 weeks ago and was only charged $10??...So here is what i wrote...
Hey Mate,
I am just writing to confirm that the postage you quoted me is correct. I noticed it was $20 which is extremley high compared to what is normally charged by most US sellers.

I also noticed that you sold to one of my friends (as per the link below) recently and after speaking to him he has advised that you only charged him $10. While this is still quite high i would be happy to pay that.

Please let me know why there is a variance and what we can do about reducing the postage cost.
Cheers
Ben

$20 Registered sounds semi-ok. Would depend on the card. If it's a base/common, I'd forget it. If it was a high end Auto/Patch or logo or 1/1 etc, then it'd be worth it.

They're only charging Registered cos of PayPal. But not sure if $20 is correct or not.

If Ev only paid $10 Registered, I'd be asking the same.

Then you gotta look at if its express or not also... I 99% sure registered post express is $20.

This was his reply...
register mail to your country is $20 via register mail with treacking # it is on my auction site and should question of been asked before you bidded not after you won and payment is due on the 6th of this month or item will be relisted and -ive feedback will be left and a claim will be filed its not like i told you after that fact..you won have that is a binding contract that we have with shipping cost clearly noted on the site

And this was my reply...****in loser...
No need to stress big fella....just thought it was strange that you would send the exact same item to the exact same place only 2 weeks ago and it was $10 cheaper on postage....

I will paypal today...
Cheers

It can cost that much for some of the extra services like signature confirmation, insurance, etc. I think plain old registered is approx $10 from the US, so your probably getting a better service. I'd bite the bullet and pay as long as it has close to that price on the sticker when it arrives. If it has like $10-$12 on the post sticker, then I'd be complaining to him.

OK...so just a follow up on this....i received the package today.

How can i tell if it was registered or not??

Seems to only have been $5.25 for postage??

$5.25 is not stamps, a printed one right? i think it's all about it.
just regular registered post..

these sellers are very tricky if they had to sell the cards cheaper.. they should have thought before they sell the cards.. never think about consequences but to charge the person who won...

i don't really care to be registered if the card is less than US$50.. because if they send it, there's no card that i haven't received until today.. it's breaking the federal law if you meant to open someone else letter or package.

i got charged $10us for postage and package turned up with 3.75 us on it ..how unfair is that..i know its only $6 but not being honest is the part i hate !!!

Yeah, I most recently got charged $19 for $3.90 worth of postage (in a certainly less than $2.00 mailer). Not happy, and particularly when the shipping charges are layed out in the auction there is not much you can do about it...except NEG 'EM!!! Once I negged a US dude who ripped me off on shipping for some remote control car parts....he basically gave me death threats, was gonna come and find me in Australia! Stupid son-of-a-bitch....

i left neg feedback tho and i will in the future..same stuff happening on oz ebay sellers charge $3.50 for postage!!!now lets be real it cost .80c for bubble mailer and $1 for stamps so it is 1.80 total..im i the only one who thinks this way or what ?? how can you charge $3.50 for somthing thats costing you $2.00 max !!!!!

People like to charge for their time to go to the post office etc. etc. I can live with probably up to double the actual cost of postage, particularly if it remains a small percentage of the card value/price. But I really dislike the crazy overcharging (400-500 % mark-ups), especially from OS sellers as then it is much harder to really work what out the actual postage cost would be.
