You could be forgiven for thinking his song is a novelty single, but don't dismiss Brett Lee as a one-hit wonder.

The duet 'You're The One For Me' recorded with Bollywood legend Asha Bholse has this week moved up to number three on the Indian pop charts after debuting at number four.

With offers of music deals and film roles set to follow, Australia's premier fast bowler could develop a showbiz career to rival his cricketing exploits.

After all, A-list success in a nation of one billion people equals mind-boggling sales and the kind of fan following that only the Hollywood elite can relate to.

"I love his voice, it melts hearts!" gasps one fan on the cricket blog Leather and Willow. "It's fantastic to hear Brett sing… everything he touches turns to gold."

"I have listened to this song over and over again," says another of the ballad about inter-racial love. "It kinda reminds me of me — I am in love with someone who's a Muslim and I am a Canadian and I'll do anything to be with him."

Lee's manager Neil Maxwell told ninemsn that he's waiting to hear from EMI India about sales figures and admitted he hadn't heard about getting to number three "but we do know it debuted at number four and we're very happy with that."

Maxwell said Lee's recording deal is based on royalties, raising the prospect of a serious windfall "but at this time it's purely a promotional opportunity to build a career in singing."

"They say that Indians love three things — music, movies and cricket — and Brett seems to cover all those bases," he said.

India FM recently described Lee as "a popular country rock singer in Australia" and reported that he turned down a role in a Bollywood film with renowned director Amitabh Bachchan.

Lee confirmed that he couldn't set aside the 50 days required to fulfil the role but Maxwell says his client is likely to appear on the big screen — in time.

"We certainly are interested in pursuing other opportunities over there but Brett has a few cricket games and a World Cup to worry about first," he said.

To Australian eyes and ears, Brett Lee crooning in Hindi and English with an elderly sari-clad lady may be amusing and perhaps even cringeworthy.

For music fans on the subcontinent, 'You're The One For Me' is the latest hit from one of their most beloved and best-known public figures… and we're not talking about the Aussie fast bowler.

Asha Bhosle is a superstar by any measure: her fan base measures in the hundreds of millions and has been gathered over six decades, fed by the release of over 12,000 songs featured on an estimated 925 Bollywood movie soundtracks.

She has also collaborated with Boy George and REM's Michael Stipe, been sampled by The Black-Eyed Peas and Nelly Furtado and feted in the song 'Brimful of Asha' that was remixed into a worldwide smash-hit by Fatboy Slim.

But like the vast majority of Indians, Bhosle is "an avid cricket fan" who knew only too well the commercial possiblities of the pairing with Lee.

"I knew Lee could sing and strum, so I wasn't apprehensive," Bhosle told The Times of India. "He's young, good-looking, intelligent, polite and — most importantly — musical."

Lee describes Bhosle as "the Aretha Franklin of India" and her life story is worthy of a 1930s jazz diva or Motown starlet.

She was born Asha Mangeshkar in 1932, moving with her family from the countryside to Bombay after her actor father died when she was nine years old.

She started singing for Bollywood films with her older sister the following year but at the age of 16 she eloped with 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle.

The marriage ended after three years and Asha returned to a still-furious family with two infant children and a third on the way.

By then, her sister Lata and a couple of other vocalists had cornered the market for heroine roles, so Bhosle had to sing for the bad girl characters (all music in Bollywood films is dubbed over the actor / dancer, known as 'playback') and work on B-grade productions.

But her star quality shone through as the top directors started to cast her in leading roles in the 1960s and by the 1970s she'd become the voice of Bollywood's most famous dancer, the enigmatically-named Helen.

Bhosle's first international collaboration was with Boy George — then at the height of his Culture Club-era fame — on 1985's Bow Down Mister and she has also worked with Sarah Brightman and the acclaimed US string quartet Kronos.

But it is doubtful that any of her other English-speaking colleagues have enjoyed Hindi lessons from this theatrical superstar.

"I have taught him a bit: he wrote 'Lee' and 'Asha' in Hindi effortlessly," Bhosle told The Times of India. "Somebody teased him about singing a love song with a woman, so I promptly insisted he show a picture of mine to his wife!

"He smiled, saying his wife would have no problem as he has been very honest with her."

However, Lee didn't follow Bhosle's suggestion that he name his son Sachin.
