Is another exquisite release good for the hobby?

Will UD do it or not?? I vote yes as they would be stupid not to with the profit margins it puts out and the hobby seems to be money driven these days rather than collector based.

I'm just of the opinion that a rare card is a rare card. Because a card is low numbered, from an expensive set but can be bought pretty easily on online market does that make it that much better? Not a fan of this set and how its turned collecting into a group of have and have not's more so than any other time in the the card collecting hobby. Even sets with cards in the past where RC's etc are worth a ton the majority of the set can be had cheaply and collectors can collect their player/team somewhat.

Cards belong on shelves, in albums and on display and not in safes simply because of value.

Flame and discuss :D

Agree Chad....Exquisite should have a few years off i reckon as i think if they continue to flood the market with Highend cards, it will only decrease the value of cards in general with what are now highend cards becoming low end and so forth

Upperdeck are obviously there for the profits, but i must applaude there efforts with the new Fleer cards coming out. Cheap price, plenty of inserts, the chance of a highend card etc. Bring back memories of the old school.....

I'd have to say that yeah, they probably will do it again, they'd be stupid not to.

Where I agree that a 1/1 from Exquisite is going to be released the following year the same (or similar design), doesnt make it really "rare".
I mean how many Bron or MJ 1/1s has Exquisite done already, and will do this coming year again, and again in the next release???

Didnt 03-04 Exquisite have 1/1s of almost all the Stars??

It's hard for me to say that any true 1/1 (say my Logomen for example) are any rarer than a Pistol Pete Auto/Wilt Auto/etc, cos we all know how stuff like that is hard to come by (not the Logomen).

I gotta agree that nowadays, it's not a hobby.... It's all about making money somewhere or another.

What I don't understand, is that how come Rookie Cards these days (take Chris Paul Exquisite Auto Patch), why do they sell for $1000+, $2000+ etc?

Are people willing to take that much of a gamble on players in hope that they make something of themselves?

Look at Jason Kidd. His cards were close to the best thing at that time (94-95), and over the years, while he was still the BEST POINT GUARD IN THE NBA, his cards dropped.

Sure, he never won a Title, but that's not because he under-achieved. 1 Man can't win it all.

Great question Chad!

Will UD release Exquisite this year? I'm betting thats a Yes.

Is another Exquisite release good for the hobby? I'm saying No on this one.

A weak draft class and no Adam Morrison (Exclusive with Topps) may be one reason why Exquisite might not be released this year but UD is on to a winner, and when you have people buying up 25+ cases of the stuff at a time, how could you not continue to release it each year.

Sure I like the cards, and yes I'll buy more Nash Exquisites when they release Exquisite again this year, but the thing that annoys me about Exquisite is how its split collecting into two groups now....Collectors and Investors.

To me its a scary realisation that your favourite players best card out of an Exquisite release (i.e Nash/Stockton Logoman AU - Sold for $20,000 US) is worth more than your car. Crazy stuff!

Can the hobby continue to sustain these prices?

I'm not sure it can.

Regards
Matt

Of course they will make another exquisite for this year. They are making the money short term for themselves so of course they would. They probably couldn't give a rats ass about what investments we make etc. So why wouldn't they inflate the market with plenty of releases of exquisite to downvalue them in the future? While in the meantime make plenty of money.

Thats just my 2c

Some good questions Chad - here's my 2 cents.

To answer yr question IMO yes they will although it'll be the weakest rookie class they've had. Nex years exquisite with oden and what is predicted to be another 03-04 type rookie strength with be stellar.

I am getting increasingly annoyed with UD though. Two recent trends - One being sticker autos - I see this as lazy on the company's behalf. The worst one though is definitely the COA they now put ont he back of cards stating "a piece of memorbilia that has been certified to us as having been used in a game" - That's not good enough. Basically, they could have bought a KG jersey from a shop anywhere with a fake authenticity certificate and then fob it off as real. It's terrible.
If topps can buy jerseys straight from nba properties why can't UD??

I see both the sticker autos and their new "Authenticity" for GJ's as being lazy money saving ventures in order to make even more money. I'd rather have less products with auto'd cards and a game jersey card that is definitely authentic.

Having said all that!! Without their products where would we be?? I know 80% of my jersey numbered cards are UD!!

I can't fathom (i am not rich, lol) dropping down that sort of money on a card, even though there are some delicious Ewing Exquisites out there.

like most things, there are pros and cons to having a set such as exquisite exist in the hobby... guess it depends which side of the fence you're on at the time ;)

The I cannot afford it and wish everything was like it was in the old days side of the fence!

then you should be happy about it!
its made autographs of other sets FAR cheaper since its release, (look at the price hit most of the ultimate collection cards have taken)..
which would allow you to get some good cards individually..

nobody is forcing you to buy exquisite, and you can just as easily buy a cheap set of cards without a GU or auto..

if people want to splurge on something that they believe is the 'best' on offer, then that is fine for them..they certainly pay for it!

I would have liked the set to be a "One off" but that was not to be so I see UD bringing them out each year and the original ones slowly going down in value just like when Topps Finest first came out ! Sure they have held some value but no-where near as much as they could have had the card company not flogged them !!!!!!!!!!!

uh-huh richo. so how do you explain that 03/04 exquisites go for many many times more than the other two exquisite sets?

All valid points and I do appreciate that I have a couple ultimate cards in my collection now and am soon to have an auto from that series as well.

I think for me is the fact I like the exquisites and I would love to own one, but for me they are so far out of the stratosphere to get a nice one....

No what I mean is the cards already released will come down in price.....Topps Finest were heaps expensive for quite a few years but Topps persisted with bringing them out year after year and eventually the original set dropped to a pretty cheap price. They still cost more than the other Topps sets but boy they are nothing compared to what the were for the first 5 years !

The hobby isn't really a hobby anymore. Kids can't just go out and buy a few packs, and start collecting. Not like the good old days 15+ years ago.

Too many different products from different companies.

As if a child can afford Exquisite? I bet most parents can't either.

That's what it comes down to. The next generation of collectors.

I can't stand exquisite at all. Over-priced ink on cardboard in my eyes. It's like brand-name clothing, you're paying for the label, not the actual product.

There are some sick ass patches out there, but there are some damn good ones in other cheaper products too.

I just wish I had the amount of money some of you guys had, since you seem to be pretty damn rich buying so many exquisites. What jobs are you in so I can apply for one?
