Not just for 90's player collectors as this applies to any player collectors but 90's stuff is much harder to come across these days.

How do you handle finally coming across super rare cards of your player and they have astronomical prices?
Do you just suck it up and pay even if it means baked beans for dinner for a month, do you crack the sh!ts and abuse the seller for not being reasonable and selling them to you for what you believe is a reasonable price (since you know what these cards will sell for) or do you just have a cry knowing you may never see these cards again and move on?

Im having a mixture of all 3 of the above things right now lol
I have some coin saved from my recent card clean out and deserve a nice christmas pressie for myself but I don't feel I should be held to ransom just because the sob knows I collect the player haha

Basically thats all of the reasons why i got over collecting Tim Hardaway. How many times ive bit the bullet and overpaid for something, only for it to come up a couple of weeks later at a fraction of what i paid for.:mad:

The problem is i've never seen these cards come up anywhere. I've been searching everything and everywhere for these cards for the past 2 years and only a couple of the 6 im after that this guy has have I seen. Of those I have seen its been 1 copy of them and they are stashed in another collectors PC.

I thought hobby's were supposed to be fun? This sh!t aggrivates me lol

Sounds like why I sold up collecting the admiral. If you overpay for something by a fair way you might as well just donate some money to the salvation army as you never see it again. It's all personal, I overpaid on quite a few cards. It's ur call dude. What kind of numbering are we talking??

Numbering between /100 down to /25 but saying that 4 of the 6 have never been seen in all my searching. Spx spectrum #/25, credentials #/23, star rubies #/45, star rubies NF #/50, starquest gold #/100, skybox thunder rave #/25.
I have the money but I picked up my PMG green for what he's asking for the credentials. Saying that gp's green pmg sold on ebay for 5x what I paid for mine

Maybe im being a cheap bastard?

Are you talking 97-98 Ex credentials the green one?? If you are they fetch a bomb!! I sold my admiral for about $1500. The rubies shouldn't be much more than $150ish, thunder raves/25 are tough, maybe $200. Not sure about te spectrums and starquest gold.

Nick you are 100% right - I think the problem is simply that you are a cheap bastard :)

But seriously I think sometimes you have to look at it from the perspective of who else is going to pay the stupid price they are asking? I mean I don't know the Payton market but are you competing with other Slave collectors who are happy to pay top dollar?

The other way I look at justifying overpaying for a card is say I would pay $600 and they are asking $900 and not budging....would you pay $300 to never ever have to search eBay for that item EVER again? Sometimes the premium is worth it knowing that in 5 yrs of searching you have never seen the card and getting this one means never searching again.

But most of the time you want to keep those greedy bastards honest - best way to do that is find out what they collect and hunt down a white whale of theirs and THEN you can give them a dose of their own medicine!!!

Yeah that makes me feel better about things. Glove usually sells a bit lower than the Admiral so maybe im being a bit tight. Yeah the credentials is the green 97-98, I paid $50 for my red.

I find it hard enough finding my own pc player so tracking down someone elses would exhume too much energy haha
I think im the main Slave collector these days but these cards im after there are plenty of set collectors around going after these htg cards and set collectors are pretty mental

try collecting everything from gold standard nick, id hate to think what ive put into it, and now that im down to missing only a few cards they are stupid prices but you have to suck it up if you want it bad enough. I have even chased down some old 90's inserts sets lately and they were quite expensive to also put together, im thinking that if you don't get the old 90's stuff now you might be hard pressed to find it again mate.

I watched a worm 97-98 ex credentials /6 fetch roughly $2k. My admiral was /18. Hope this helps. The dude I sold it too had an mj /9 bgs 9 and a Duncan /6!!

Lucky collecting Weatherspoon it isnt too bad
Some Mashburns I have been shocked at the prices but eventually the ebay seller brings the price down if it doesnt sell. If it does then the price was right for the market at the time I guess
I once saw a Weatherspoon I needed, told the ebay seller I thought it was well over priced and told him what I would pay. He said no but about 12 months later came back to me and we did a deal.

shiiiiiiiiiiit Nick.....some crazy Paytons listed atm.....rookie move listing them all at once though!....when i was collecting, i'd bite the bullet... particularly if it was for something like the ones listed. Plus, if you've got the coin from selling other cards, presumably for a profit, that should ease the pain a little!!

Thats the thing, they are all stupidly hard to find cards. I'll see what he's wiling to do on price and go from there. Maybe he'll be gentle and lube it up before sticking it to me lol

yeah its all about how frequently you see these cards, if this is the first time you have seen some of them in years then it may be time to suck it up and shell out some bucks before someone else makes it part of their pc

Yeah, I get it!

I am a player collector, but not 90's guys, and I find this sort of thing happens all the time! Even now, I can look on ebay and see 4-5 NICE Blairs that I want, but refuse to pay stupid amounts for! I mean, $750 for a RAP /5 of a guy that is fighting for over 10 minutes in a game? C'mon!

The problem is that too many people are only in the hobby for the money and will just do what it takes to try to catch the big suckerfish on their hook.

I live collecting, but I love many other things in life as well, like watching NBA, playing with my kids etc etc, all of which give me way more enjoyment than storing a bit if cardboard in my safe! ;)

If I can continue in this hobby by recycling my money (selling to buy) then I will, but I won't be held to ransom by someone preying on 'completists'. I missed a couple of nice Kawhi cards that I wanted, but they sold too high, so I bought myself 3 Kyrie autos for the same price that I would have spent on the one Kawhi, I am happy I did too!

Hope you have a win with these mate!!!

I see the listing now. You aregoibg to have to pay over the top for some of them!! Especially the 97 credentials. Unfortunately a lot of other collectors will want them too if they don't come up often!!

I've learnt something in this hobby. If I get to find something which I really like but is listed at a ridiculous price, I simply ignore it. Do not even attempt to msg the seller or establish communication cause it just shows that you are interested. There will be a very good chance down the track that the seller will soften his stance if nobody approaches him.
