We are being starved!!

Anyone know if ESP will release there series before the 1st round next year? I'm abit over 2 series a year if actually prefer there to be just one really big series a year. Like have the top 17 from every side in it with some good inserts etc

I believe the NRL Traders (think champions) will be released in February. Hope to have new info any day now!

The issue I have had with NRL cards of late is the lack of creativity. This encompasses a) player selection in base team sets, insert sets and signature cards. b) standards and variations (or lack of) in insert sets. c) mindless devotion to Rookies (an unfortunate American obsession) and d) the fact that only two sets are released per year.

Now if we do get 4-5 sets from ESP next year I hope they can use this to advantage. Sets for the collector, sets for the kids, full team sets, new and innovative insert sets, quality signature cards featuring the top players, game worn/used material cards, more Rookies if they must, etc, etc.

Don't think that you have to buy everything that comes out, pick what you like and concentrate on that. More choice is what I'm after and more sets means just that.

I was talking to the newsagent at jesmond today that said the same thing.

The Newsagent where i bought 2 boxes from on the day they were released said they sold 80% of the case they purchased.

The feedback was not enough value a box to keep people buying them which ESP have said to be they are addressing with future products.

so living in the US. I have a few questions.

So i work Part time for a local hobby store (card shop) and we ship 70% of all NBA basketball cards that we sell online to Auzzy. In our opinion Basketball is King. . is that a correct statement?

Im not only amazed but cant figure out why Aussies eat these cards up, especially 90s inserts which i feel like are a dime a dozen. I have notebooks upon notebooks upon notebooks full of such and just don't have the time to list them all.

Seems like the only NFL teams that we ship down under are San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers. Are they the most popular?

Rugby / AFL is non existent, period. I had no clue such cards existed until discovering these forums, Some look quite good. Not use to seeing the uniforms the players wear, they look almost like NBA jerseys. So From reading this post there are not many yearly releases by the companies? or not really good releases i should say.

So Would you say the most popular in order is NBA, AFL, then NFL, or are NFL cards taking more popularity then your AFL?

There was mention a while back that ESP are also doing a set similar to the AFL Teamcoach with the codes/prizes etc.... is this still happening?

Yes, there was a set planned for March like this.

Sweet. So we are getting a "Traders set" (like Champions) in Feb and a Teamcoach-esque set in March.....

Plus it was mentioned we are getting a high-end "series 2" like set, and wasnt there mention of doing another Representative set like this years?

Yer....here is the post I made in July after speaking with Terry from ESP. Obviously some of these plans may have changed since then but this is all we have to work off from now. Clearly the artwork deal with Marvel fell through. -

Here is the info i got regarding future ESP products planned:

2012 September- Limited Series- Representative Set (tap twist posted details above).
2012 December- Trying to get a deal done with Marvel at the moment in conjunction with The Avengers to have a 5 card NRL set feature an Avenger on each card and an NRL player from one of the semi-final teams (I guess the 5 players would be players that were heavily featured during the semis). He said they would be Lenticular cards where an Avenger could morph into an NRL Player. He is waiting to hear back from Marvel as to whether he can get the artwork. It would be sold as a set in a nice box at approx $300 and /1000 sets.
2013 February- NRL Traders - Will be their main NRL series with a volume of 350,000 packets in the release. Basically their Series 1 product.
2013 March- NRL Power Play - Will be a Game Card Series. I think similar to the Match Attax style cards for the kids where players have attack and defense ratings etc on the card and can be used to play a game.
2013 May/June- NRL Limited Series (Looks like they call their higher end sets Limited and i'd expect them to do NRL teams instead of Rep with this set). He mentioned future limited releases would also involve using pieces of Game Used balls in the cards.
2013 TBC- Said maybe a Series 2 after the Limited set releases (follow-up to the cheaper NRL Traders Set from February) Said they will play this one by ear because they don't want to flood the market (LOL)
2013 September- Limited Series- Another Representative Set.
2014- Said in early 2014 they plan on releasing NRL Dreamteam (the name of the NRL's Fantasy game on their website). Will be another Game Card style Series but the Redemption cards in this series will be to win a car!. There will be 6 Car redemption Cards in the set which will win you a car from Toyota.

"There will be 6 Car redemption Cards in the set which will win you a car from Toyota" most likely it will be a Toyota Yaris

Saw your post on the weekend and thought someone with a bit more knowledge might have responded. But I'll give you my take on it.
You raised some good points about NBA. It is very popular in Aust, more so than any other US sport, but I wouldn't say it's close to local sports. AFL is the most popular, played in more parts than the rugby codes. In case you didn't know, AFL is more widespread and is probably played on a truer national basis. NRL is concentrated more in the eastern states, tried to go national some years ago without great success, but the agenda remains. Rugby Union is national but is very much a minority especially in the card world.
You were right about the number of releases and the quality. Big discussions around here about these very subjects. Recently have a new NRL supplier - the previous one did both NRL and AFL, now doing AFL only. Next years early releases will tell us more.
Cricket is another popular sport with collectors but a newly released set is the first we have had since 2009/10. As for NFL, very little interest as far as I'm aware and I actually have recently started collecting NFL. Can't explain the Chargers/49ers thing, maybe just a coincidence - I'm a Broncos fan.
Hope that makes it a bit clearer. Maybe some other members can put a better perspective on things.
