Why is this place dead?

I don't think the place is dead but in some ways it does seem to be dying, hard to say what the exact problem is. It could be a combination of all of the problems listed by previous posters in this thread.

For me I lost the desire to collect about 12 months ago and can not get enthused enough to collect a set or player with the passion that I did back when I had to have every Jermaine O'Neal card that appeared on eBay.

Funny thing is I still love busting boxes so may as well continue with that. Now to get a job to earn some money to buy those boxes. Nah, the wife's money has worked so far may as well keep using that!

Ive noticed a distinct corellation to my full time presence on this site, and the 'dying'ness. I mean, if yall didnt want me around, you coulda just said so and I woulda blatantly ignored you ;)

In all seriousness though, even though I have only been on her ft for 6 months, I have noticed the decline in activity over the past few months. Its cause? I dont know. But I think I will blame Fleer Retro, cos after that, everyone went bankrupt or spiralled into depression after trying for an MJ n ending up with Rick Barry ;)

Grab your tinfoil hats everyone, its a conspiracy. Upper Deck is trying to kill the hobby from the inside out. They are like a psycho ex gf, if they cant have you no one can! You have been warned. Keep watching the skies!

i think that we need to get new member with new collection on the site. Everyone is complaining about people bumping the same sales threads ect with the same cards, but thats all we have to offer. Its also the same members trying to sell the same stuff so in saying that to fix the problem would be to hunt out some fresh members with fresh cards.
im also getting sick of collecting due to the fact the mail box hasen't had any love for weeks due to running out of gold standard cards that i need, so i started collecting certified gold patches on a tight budget now thats not working out either so have gone back to 90's insert card to reignite the passion so far so good.

Great thread, I have'nt read all the posts so hope I'm not repeating stuff that's been said but here is my opinion:)

1. It is a buyers market right now, meaning most of the good stuff is being held on to.
2. Fleer Retro provided ALOT of excitement and some amazing cards to chase but also sucked ALOT of $$$ out of collectors.
3. Panini to me is still struggling. I've been thinking of going for something more up to date but am waiting for the quality to arrive. How are we still being smashed with a crazy amount of sticker autos.

I actually think it's gotten to the stage where a great patch is outselling a great auto card of the same player because there is just WAY too many auto cards out there.

Please Upper Deck, come back. Sure they're not perfect but I'm sick of searching Exquisite David Robinson and seeing 30 College cards (I do like the College stuff but it's just too much).

It is a shame that this place has gone a little quiet but money is a major reason. People don't want to sell cards for less than what they paid which is what is happening right now.

It's even more of a shame because the NBA is friggen hot right now. NBA jerseys are in the Aus public everywhere, there is plenty of stars and even the junky teams are at least exciting to watch.

Things will pick up. So only sell if you HAVE to. Unfortunately, I'm that guy at the moment, ha ha.

Im only new on here so i cant comment on it dying but you made a good point about panini and new cards frankly being a bit boring, i truely have been dissapointed ever since upper deck lost their licence and all of a sudden exquisite became boring where as before i could cruise ebay for hours looking at new impressive cards

Thats why I added another team and recently added base and inserts of lebron kobe and durant.... but still not having much luck. I have even resorted to putting up a specific want list on wolves base for one year in hopes of getting some more action.

I think a lot of people have had enough of eBay and their ever climbing fees too. I can't remember the last time I bought a card from there, I've only had luck through the forums lately.

Fact is, everyone wants to sell or trade at top dollar, and only want to buy at bargain price. Also, there is way too much sledging & criticism from some members, and way too much talk and hype from others- it puts people off and members who collect fav players and sets for their own reasons are shut down because its all about the bling- whos got the superstars, the autos, the highends, when really some of the most valuable cards are those that are sentimental, based on photography, graphic design, artistry and spark memories of pullin a favourite insert, these are true treasures rather than a insert based on a beckett value.

Clearly you are right about the buying and selling issues, but not sure I see where you are coming from with your other point! I think OzCards is WAY more supportive of PC's that aren't necessarily high end, but are special to the owners!

I would be interested to see some examples of people doing what you are referring too!

I personally look to make a fair deal. I will trade by what ever value a person wants to, but if someone throws BV at me then the trade on their end must also be BV, what has irked me lately is when I have offerred a really good value deal based on sale value and entained taking some trade to lessen the sale value, I researched prices I could get those cards for and the had BV thrown back at me, but then when I advised my BV totally killed theirs the deal fell apart because their players were tried and true - but my players were the currently hot ones... such is life... I think some people still need an education in what runs the hobby these days and it certainly isnt beckett - they make their prices up now days anyway - just look at the amount of $12 BV gu that be lucky to sell for $2.

I really do try to help people out and I love trading, but the deals have certainly dried up lately.

You must have this site confused with blowout...

This time every year, you see the same thread come up and its the same discussion. Summer is upon us, Christmas is a month away, people change their habits in trading and buying and selling.

However this year......

The issue for what you should be all talking about is how you have gotten great deals on eBay with the 550 free listings a month and how they have killed even the average card price. In the last 4 months, the average card has gone down some 30-40% over what it was selling for. Ebay is a place to get a bargain and is driving down pricing as everyone is trying to sell. Its a buyers market as much as a sellers market if your willing to take whatever you get for the cards.

Welcome to collecting!

past 2 days i change my mind, this forum has died down, hopefully members took advantage of these black friday deals so atleast we have some box breaks that start new convos coz at the moment there isnt much going on.

I think perhaps part of the reason is cause a lot of people talk about a lot of things in the one "official" thread rather than start new threads for the specific topic; creating new threads on stuff generally generates more responses than a single post in the one big thread.

MandC is spot on - it's that time of year, flat out at work, flat out with friends and family.

Don't forget that it is the users (All of us!) of the forum that make this a great place. So a few points -
* Why not run a competition in the comps forum
* Remember that trading is a bit of give and take, not every trade will come out on top, it's about getting something you want.
* If you find a good seller on ebay why not encourage them to join up
* Offer something up from your PC (I know we all have things locked in their for a reason, but not all of the are pC, maybe just hard to get)
* Post some threads, I just noticed there wasn't even one about the kut tippett hearing - it might even be something in the general forum to find out more about others here

Some people may have set their priorities and this forum became less of their priorities. But I'm pretty sure that it will be ok again when these members feels the urge to come back and post more often again...

NY-Brooklyn is a good rivalry in the making...

MIA-SA game was a shocker...

Personally i'm a little disillusioned with the hobby atm. Seems like nearly every auction on ebay these days is shilled and the ones that aren't don't send overseas. I'm also going through one of my car phases so the money I'd spend on cards goes into the GTI which inturn means I'm spending more time on car forums than on here.
