I put an inquiry for a case of gold standards which I was all set and ready to purchase, but the eBayer said it would cost $75 to ship plus $271 for taxes etc . I'm not willing to pay that at al. Has anyone else bought a case from USA that has experienced this? If not can.u guide me on where I should put the case . I'm all ready for it and I want it to arrive before Xmas
Thanks in advance

When I bought my threads case I got hit with a $200+ import tax. So that's what your 270 is. Anything over $1000 in value coming into Australia has to pay this fee

The $1000 limit for customs is $1000 value which includes the product PLUS shipping.

The taxes and fees include 10% GST and then brokerage fees most likely.

In saying this you shouldn't have to pay the eBay seller this fee, you will be contacted by the shipping company to pay it.

Unless the seller prepays it to the shipping company on your behalf, which is what it sounds like in this instance. That ensures there are no delays once it gets here and will get through customs quickly rather than being held up and you waiting for notification of requirement to pay the duties.

Didn't realise that Graham, thanks for the info, I learnt something today too :)

The $1000 value is product ONLY not including the shipping....

BUT if you go over the 1k, you are taxed on the shipping cost AS WELL....

as mentioned already, you will be contacted by customs hen it arrives in Australia if the declared value is over the limit, and you pay them directly. (that is if it is shipped regular mail)

IF it is shipped by a courier, ( anything other than UPS, USPS or Australia post) as regular mail/parcel then it is taxed NO MATTER the value...

Graham is also correct, it can be pre payed as well to speed things up.

Personally, I have never had any trouble and import products from the US weekly.
I just ensure each order is under the declared limit,

You could always ask the seller to split the case and send in two lots so each is below the value, (you ill need to trust them they wont search the boxes i guess) This way it may cost more in postage costs but in the long run be LESS that having to pay taxes.

The other option is to under declare... ( THIS IS ILLEGAL) and has another downside.. If the parcel goes missing it is not covered for its full amount of value! ( so if you have an $1800 case, and declare it at $999 then you can only insure for $999 and if it goes missing that is all you will get back)

I'd thought about this too, if i was to buy a case for roughly 1200, i would just say 999, but anything after that, i'd prob just pay the customs tax to cover myself

The best way would still be to deal with one of the buisiness's here locally that already bring them in,
(they ere listed just before)

saves you the hassle..... and the risk!!

True, but saying that, not all of them stock the product that one may be looking for. I guess it comes down to whether people want to wait to get their case, or want it asap and dont care about the cost - to buy locally is often more expensive, but as you said, is less hassle (until Auspost gets a hold of it haha)

Yep sorry just read the rules. Goods need to be under $1000AUD decalred value or you pay duties/taxes on the whole lot including the shipping cost.

Isn't UPS a courier ?

What you said USED to be the case with FedEX etc but they now also follow the $1000 limit. So unless it is over the $1000 you are fine. I've had a few things come fedex without problem (golf clubs etc)

That won't work.

If multiple packages arrive in Australia to the same consignee sent from a single consignor overseas, the value of all packages may be combined for duty and tax assessment purposes

I've tried it and been stung. Split up a parcel and had them sent a couple of days apart. Thanks to the postal service they caught up to each other and customs combined the parcels when they landed here for duties/taxes.

Yep - this is a way also but (as you said) it is illegal and the insurance thing is a big worry, so you will lose money if there is a problem.

I was not aware FedEx now do it that way too now..... good to know and i will look into the rates again.
UPS for some time has been classed as a postal service when it comes to the customs issue we are talking about and taxes.

As for the splitting packages I know exactly what you are saying, I have come close before myself,
often order 2-4 K worth of stuff from one of my suppliers in the US and always have to remind them to send at least 1 week apart, not just a couple of days...

There is always the chance that it will go thru without even being picked up...

Also the value is worked out on RETAIL not wholesale, so i am actually cutting it fine many times with some of my orders anyway.. been fine so far....
the other issue i have is some of the product i import is actually not allowed to be normally, As some products are more potent that police pepper spray, it is classed as a weapon!

And you would not beleive the hoops i had to jump thru with Customs and Quarantine to bring these in to the country with REAL bugs in them. HLscorpionPOPblueS.jpg ( that is just one example of the range)
