Why do you go for the team you go for??

Pretty sure there's an interesting behind everyone's choices.

I originally went for the Nuggets purely because of Melo, I remember turning the TV on to the 2003 NBA draft and watching Melo get drafted. As they played his highlights it seemed as though he played with a certain type of confidence almost an arrogance. Once the season started he won Rookie of the month every month and he's been my fave player ever since.

Then between to coming and going of players like Camby, K-Mart, J.R., A.I., Billups, Lawson, Nene, Afflalo and others, the whole Melo-drama and our awesome '09 Conference Finals run, I couldn't bring myself to follow Melo to New York. And I'm glad because I love my Nuggets and in March I went to Denver, beautiful city btw, and saw my beloved Nuggets live. :D Good times

Would love to hears some other stories.

I have no idea the exact reason, but I idolised D Rob as a kid, around 10. I had a collection of around 80 cards of him by the time I was a teen, which was pretty good in those days! haha

I remember his 'all about the game' mentality and vaguely remember things like the quadruple double game and the 71 pointer.

I lost touch with the NBA in around 96 and picked it back up in 09, only to find that I missed a fella by the name of Tim Duncan - the greatest PF ever to play the game - being drafted and in turn, all 4 championships! :(
I guess no one could ever accuse me of following them because of their success! haha

I got back into cards around 09 as well and couldn't dream of collecting anyone except a Spur, even if their only affordable player/rookie was a second rounder, so I started PCing Blair! I learned to really like and appreciate the Bear, but if/when he gets traded, he is dead to me!

But, my love for the team is because of the way they handle themselves. They don't get caught up on the macho BS on the court, or the 'superstar' status', they just work as a team to get the wins! For anyone wanting to learn the game in its purest form, just watch the Spurs!

Born and raised in Canberra and love the Green Machine, so early 90's the Celtics were the easy choice.

You lucky bugger!

Well, this is kinda embarrassing... but I follow the Bucks
I used to be purely an outside shooter (not by choice, I simply couldn't do anything else!), and when I saw that George Karl-led team with Ray Ray, Big Dog, Cassell the ET and Tim Thomas all bombing away from beyond the arc, I thought it was the most awesome basketball ever.
Then I grew up and realised they wouldn't win  and that no one ever wanted to come to such a small-market team!

At around the same time, I went to the States to visit some relatives and watched TJ Ford (and Royal Ivey! :D) play for the Longhorns in his national POY season, and guess what... the Bucks drafted him!
It rekindled my love for the team after they traded away Ray and Flip Murray for half a season of a very old Gary Payton.

And then Ford left too. But then Brandon Jennings, who I had been following since high school (I even went to buy a few DVDs of his AAU games haha), unexpectedly dropped to the Bucks with the 10th pick after that season in Rome!
And I have always loved the 'fringe' guys like Delfino :(, Livingston :(, Mbah a Moute :), and countless others!

In other words, I fell in love with the team at a time when I didn't even really know much about basketball (now I'm no longer a pure shooter , because I am not much good at shooting anymore! :p), found out the team was crap, but kept getting sucked back in any way.
And I don't expect things to change in the next 50 years :)

(one too many emoticons? reflecting the emotional rollercoaster that comes with Milwaukee Bucks fandom!)

Was into it as a youngster and followed mainly Orlando but my favourite player was Jason Kidd. When i started watching NBA again Jason Kidd was playing for the Mavericks so i started to follow them and then 1 season later they won the title. Good timing haha. Think it's gonna be a while till our next one though lol

Mine is a lot easier than you guys. The team I follow most is my hometown team, the Utah Jazz. Been a fan of them as long as I've followed basketball, since the 2nd or 3rd grade.

I was a loyal suns man for about 10 years, 90% of the reason being Steve Nash. He was the first player i collected and I have followed his career now since i was 13! I love his pass first and team mate first game style but his ability to step up and hit a big shot every now and then. When he won MVP I thought it was awesome and then to back it up was even better.
So when I heard Nash was making the move to chase a ring this season I decided to move with him, the day the news broke he was moving to the Lakers I was devastated haha. I flat out refused to jump on the band wagon and now with Howard moving there for the big 3 situation I just can't bring myself to be a Lakers man.
So I'm kind of team less this season! I'll be following the suns closely and I think Dragic is an awesome resigning and he will excel. I also hope Nash can get himself a ring, he flat out deserves it. But I think the team I will end up supporting from now will be the Clippers. Following my PC man Blake from his rookie years through just like I did with Nash :)

I follow the magic because of two words "penny hardaway" was the man back in the day, no idea why I don't collect him???

What he said, except i do collect him haha - Being an Orlando fan isnt easy. We make good players better, then let em walk for peanuts. All that will change now that we have Andrew Nicholson, Moe Harkless and Andrew Wiggins :D

Great read guys.

I love the Knicks because they give lots of money to really really old players, if they can't afford it they will throw in a few draft picks to sweeten the deal which I think is awesome because who needs youth to build a team when you have money.

No seriously it all started in the late 80's and the big hype behind Patrick Ewing coming out of Georgetown, Patrick only played cricket and soccer in his homeland Jamaica & never played basketball until his teens when he moved with his family to Boston.

His story sucked me in and I've followed the Knicks ever since with the box of tissues close by my side. Jordan and the Bulls was all the rage in the early 90's and I secretly followed them but it was always New York for me and that will never change even if they do give me a heart attack at this ripe young age.

Charlotte Hornets were my team as a kid. Loved Alonzo Mourning since his days at Georgetown. With a team like Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues and Dell Curry were always a hard working yet exciting team. I had their backpacks starter cap and jacket even.

Then when I left collecting and Hornets relocating to NO I always had a soft spot for Chicago mainly due to Rodman and Longley. With Rose being drafted and Deng finally found my team. Always wanted Bogut and Noah to get traded so I could collect Bogut in a Bulls uniform.

Dream on! Don't tank for a #1 pick, the basketball gods will make sure draft lottery karma comes back to bite you in the butt!:D

Following a sports team is generally (emphasis on GENERALLY) about where you live or grow up. You follow the team from your home town/city watever. Like for rugby league I follow the bulldogs. Been a bankstown boy my whole life until I moved to the country a few years ago. For basketball because We don't live in the USA the team you follow will GENERALLY be because you follow a player. In the 90's I follow the bulls, love MJ and Pippen. Then after that dynasty finished I kinda didn't support anyone I was just a fan I suppose. The in 03 wade was drafted and that's all she wrote, been a heat fan ever since!

It depends though, i follow both the Dragons in NRL and Carlton in AFL but i've lived in Northern NSW/The Gold Coast all my life. I was just brought up following them because my dad does and he has also lived in the same area as me his whole life. I agree that most of us here don't live in the US so we just pick a team based on players we like.

Not always true... When I got into NFL I decided on Miami because a) I like Dolphins and b) I like the colours. My fave player has always been Reggie Bush, it was just convenient the he went to Miami lol
