So from memory after this upcoming NBA season, Panini's license with the NBA will have run out. Has anyone heard of Topps or UD trying to get the license back? or will Panini again have a monopoly for a few years :[

i really miss the UD designs they had like SP Authentic and Topps have come out with some really nice sets in NFL and MLB so seeing an NBA inception type set would make my day.

UD black would be great even though panini have done their own version and are doing one for the nfl that is too close to what UD did in my opinion. so far have not been impressed with the design of any panini product, dont know what it is but they have no appeal whatsoever and designs look really bland as opposed to the clean look UD use to put out

With the way Upper Deck have carried on since they "lost" the licence I can not see the NBA agreeing to let them have the licence again.

Upper Deck should've taken some time away from the sports card market to concentrate on their memorabilia sales rather than release set after set in College uniforms which basically said F#%& YOU to the NBA.

Also can not see Topps getting back into the market as they are too much of a good thing with the NFL licence and I do not see the NBA licence as being a money maker

This is just my opinion so don't go and crucify me now.

Love em or hate em I would say get used to Panini

^sadly you could very well be right. Im hoping at least Topps step up and get the license, no doubt Panini will share it with them. UD have messed up big over the last few years with lawsuits to do with their MLB and Yugioh products. NCAA saved them and they still have NHL but the current lockout they have or whatever it is could mess that up for them aswell

With all of the legal issues UD is having, I doubt they will have the cash to win back the NBA license. panini paid a huge amount for it and I dont see them giving it up.

UD is basically working from release to release with their funding......i have no doubt they used the cash from all of the presales from Retro many months ago to help fund its release and some future releases.

Who ever gets it I hope it's an exclusive sole license which guarantees the continuation of FULL rookie class auto sets. For this to be the case it will likely have to be Panini.

Why is everyone saying it's a monopoly? Did anyone but me pay attention to all the announcements when they came out regarding the license? NBA Properties and Commissioner David Stern put together the package and then present it to the prospective companies - not the other way around. With the 2009 negotiations, both upper deck and topps quote the "financial stress of the economic times" for the reason not to renew the license. This was right off the bat, mind you. Yes, Panini was looking to reenter the NBA Market as well as move into the US domestic market, but were happy to do so as a third party. Is it their fault they had the money to pay what NBA Properties and Commissioner Stern wanted and Upper Deck and Topps apparently didn't? Sports Marketing Licenses are not like business - the Sports Governing bodies themselves put the package together, not the other way around. So stop whinging about it being a bloody monopoly.

I highly doubt upper deck will be back given their current financial and legal problems. Tops.... maybe. But if Topps do come back, don't expect to see much in your local stores - for some reason topps doesn't like sending stuff overseas.

So why isn't it a monopoly?!? It is! The reasons behind the monopoly doesn't make it not one...... But I agree, people either don't realize the reasoning for it or have forgotten...
