The Ashes - Third Test

It projects a bad opinion of the bowling side, for one thing... Ok, put it the other way, if Ponting got out like that, would you be spewing? If Harmison and Flintoff appealed every second or third delivery like Lee or Warne do??? I feel sorry for McGrath in the Aussie innings, but it's not a game-changing decision IMO... But when someone who's a game-winner gets given his orders, that sucks... And the Aussies do appeal way more than other teams...

Bad umpiring decisions (caused by appealing by the English) against Australia in the last Ashes series (Martyn in particular) may have cost us the Ashes....at the end of the day both sides are there to win and will do everything within the rules to win.

The same happened with the Italian soccer player taking a dive in the World Cup against the Aussies....it may have been bad sportsmanship/ ethics or whatever but the history books will record that they have the World Cup.

Yep i would agree with that...

The rules say you can appeal and obviously it isnt that bad otherwise players would have been fined same as Brett Lee was....

Symonds is on fire...i would love to see him keep his spot ahead of Watson...

I'm surprised at some peoples opinions of appealing. Keep in mind that a batsman will not be given out unless there is an appeal. Or the batsman walks of course. What if in soccer the player had to appeal before given a penalty? Then there would be appeals all day long. Bowlers work long and hard trying to get to batsmen and it is well within there right to appeal. The standard of umpiring has been excelent so far, let down really only by 2 decisions (for each team) in this match.

I believe at the end of the day it all evens out anyway. Cricket Karma I guess.

I disagree with putting Jaques in at the moment. Yes Hayden is low on form, but his understanding with Langer and his history is way on his side. Plus he has pulled of some blinder catches in this game. A feel that a ton is on the way for him before the end of the series. Besides, apart from the 2 games against England (which weren't 1st class games) Jaques hasn't really been in the form that would secure him an Ashes berth. Maybe next year.

Btw - after the Ashes there are no more tests until December next year. Crazy huh...

6-122 at lunch btw. Symonds great bowling. Very tight early sessions. Pieterson and Mahmood in.

Mark.

I admit I didn't see all of the last Ashes, so I can't rightfully comment on that. But do you disagree that the Aussies appeal STRONGLY for anything that may be within a barn-door of being out? Asking a question is one thing, and should be allowed... Running down the pitch with your hands up in celebration and shouting your head off, then REMEMBERING to turn around and look for confirmation is quite another in my books... And as for the Italian game, history can get stuffed IMO, we got royally shafted! Grosso should've been fined and suspended! Even though the winners write history, that doesn't mean it's correct or impartial... Aussies did deserve their other wickets this morning, though, so credit to them. =D>

Bloody hell! Clark's ripping through them! How old is he? He looks a bit old, but I've hardly heard of him before this year...

See, this is what annoys me about the Aussies: They appeal for anything that goes near bat or pad, and now another class batsman has been given his marching orders unjustly! It was shown on the replay there was no contact, the Aussies go up anyway, and he's given out! Same thing happened last day in Adelaide with one of the English batsmen... And don't tell me McGrath's dismissal makes up for it... (Ooh, no! McGrath was just about to cut loose and score a double ton, too...) That's why I don't like a fair few of the Aussie players, and don't respect their record as much as most do...

Sorry mate EVERY side does it - England did it last year - if your the home team you appeal more it happens....

Fuuny don't see you bitching about England appealing and getting kaspo out caught behind when his glove hand was CLEARLY off the bat - they were so close to losing and probably the ashes too last year but they appealed like litle school kids and kaspo was given out... if we have to take that bullshit appealing on the cjin.... then let everyone else takeit on the chin.... it works both ways and I don't see you bitching out the subcontinent teams that do it a lot either....

and I wouldn't say the australians dominate the umpires either cos the umpires report them and they get fined... and to suggest umpires succumb to pressure is crap sometimes if there is noise you get a bad calll....

if you accept the english apealed against kaspo in good faith than you must accept the same of the strauss delivery otherwise you are just a contradiction.

I agree with your thoughts Wolves ! (Not to mention the McGrath appeal (and wicket) in Australia's 1st Innings......I am an official NSW umpire and even I CLEARLY saw that hit his shoulder !!!

Axeman - FYI sometimes the fielders go up because they hear a noise at the same time the ball passes the bat and assume it is an edge.....Strauss may not have hit the ball but I (and the commentators) all heard the noise which obviously the umpire also heard. I suspect it was the "creak" in the bat handle that sometimes occurs....it was not a bad decision just an unlucky one whereas the McGrath one was just a BAD decision ! From what I have read of your comments I suspect you have not played much competitive cricket otherwise you would understand the appealing and how it happens everywhere..........no offence is intended mate but I think you show a bit of naivety towards the game with those sort of comments. I have played cricket competitively for over 20 years and umpired for about 3 so I have a good grasp of the game and I can say (unbiased) that the Strauss appeal was a fair one ! That being said I did not for an instant think the Strauss wicket in Adelaide (Of Warne in the 2nd Innings) was out.......

But.....If we are going to talk about appealing when it is obviosly not out have a look at the last Ashes series......Martyn (twice) & Ponting were given out LBW of some pretty obvious inside edges yet the English still appealed......not to mention the kaspa wicket Wolves spoke about....same thing different time - Oh how quick we forget !

i hope we can bat the whole day today and a little bit tommorow and try to bowled them out we around 150 to 160 overs remaining on the game wid around 450+ lead. so yeah another 200 on top of our current score will be alright. i hope symonds and gilly get some big hits if this 2 continue to stay in there.

To be fair, I already stated a few posts ago that I didn't/couldn't watch last Ashes series, so I'm not IGNORING those dismissals, I was unaware of them, or anything bar a score-card... And I have also said other teams do appeal un-neccessarily at times, I just think the Aussies do it more than their fair share, especially when they complain about other nations doing the wrong thing, "but not us..." Then they go out and make a big show about this special "code of conduct" that they've made for themselves "above and beyond" what the ICC requires. But I don't see much action on this, just a document they've all signed. And how about the sledging? I mean, you can tell "your mama" jokes on the field/court, as long as everyone knows it's all fun. But then when Sarwan says something to McGrath in reply to sledging, McGrath threatens to "rip your ****ing throat out!" Or last time the Kiwis where on tour here, Chris Cairns had a close friend or family member hit by a train and killed. Then when he came into bat, as the bowler's running in the keeper and slips cordon start up: "Ch-ch-ch-ch! Ch-ch-ch-ch!" I mean, that's sick IMO...

To be honest apart from Warne - I don't think the Aussies over appeal.......Warne over does it a bit but I love him anyways - He's a Legend ! He misses out on his fair share of appeals so if he gets a few dodgy decisions go his way then I think he deserves them. Cricket has a funny way of evening out....anyone who has played or watched for long enough will agree.

As for not commenting on the last series because you didn't see it.......well that sort of proves (to me anyways) that your not really seeing things in the full perspective and your not a huge cricket fan like me.......I WAS THERE in England watching it first hand so if England are getting the rough end of the stick over here then I say - Karma !

Anways your points are valid and they are well worth saying....I just wanted to give my opinion on them - We're Cool I hope :)

No worries, champ! :) I'll be the first to admit I'd rather watch NBA or a bit of League than follow cricket religiously... I used to be a fair bit more into it with the old fellas like Boony, Merv, AB, McDermott, now I'll watch it if I'm not busy but won't go out of my way to watch it. And I figured a while ago that you were pretty big on cricket, so I'm happy to say you'd know more about games that happen overseas than I do. But as I said, it's not a huge thing for me, so no offence taken... =D>

But then when Sarwan says something to McGrath in reply to sledging, McGrath threatens to "rip your ****ing throat out!"

Do you actually know what he said? For those who dont, heres what was said:

mcgrath: "so what does lara's dick taste like?"

sarwan: "why dont you ask your wife?"

mcgrath: "If you ever f---ing mention my wife again, I will f---ing rip your f---ing throat out."

and i back pigeon on that one, you dont bring a players family into a sledge, thats over the line.

Yes, I know exactly what was said. If he didn't let his mouth over-run his brain, there would be no room for a retort... I mean, why say it in the first place? I remember another one where (I think) McGrath was bowling to a Zimbabwaen named Eddo Brands, who was a bit chubby to say the least: McGrath: "Brands, why are you so f#cking fat???"
Brands: "Because every time I sleep with your wife she gives me a cookie..."
