So i've decided to get a Jordan RC, it's just that time for me.

There are 2 i'm looking at on the bay, don't think i'll take either one. However, would you go a 4.5 PSA or a 6 BGS? The 6 BGS looks substantially better, but are the PSA's a more respected company. Looking for some advice here please ;)

I would look at getting a BGS Authentic "Altered"....
They sell for alot less then they should sometimes, you can get them in the $300-$500 range...
I would take an altered in almost mint condition, over a BGS 6 or less for the same money anyday.
I have one (not for sale) that would grade an easy BGS 9 possible BGS 9.5(back centering might kill it) if it wasn't for an alteration to the surface?...I can't find a single blemish with my card, but Beckett did!?!
I have seen alot of close to mint cards sell very cheap, just because of a small alteration....
It might be a better way to go, if you don't want to spend big $$$ on a better grade...

Really?! What crack are you on?!

What does altered mean?

It means the card has been tampered with. ie trimmed/cut to make it look sharper. edges have been colored in etc
In other words... useless

Yep!
I have seen plenty of MJ RC BGS 9.5 's that have been altered in some way....there is more then one on ebay right now!
Some are very easy to see they have been, trimmed-shaved!
The rookie i have, WAS a BGS 9! with 9,9,9.5,9 subs!
I cracked it open and sent it for a regrade myself! Hoping it would regrade at BGS 9.5!
I DID NOT touch the card in anyway, yet it came back as altered....
So that means when it was a BGS 9 it was already ALTERED!
I can't find a thing wrong with its surface...
BUT i think its been trimmed, as one side has a different cut to the other!
Yet beckett said only the surface was an issue?
Just goes to show that just because a card it graded, doesn't mean it hasn't been altered....

I would take my card over a BGS 6! Would you not?

Usually I notice bgs go for more online if the centering is really good. Whereas psa doesn't describe the centering or other sub grades only the overall grade

Yeah look of late, we've been informed that neither companies are perfect! Personally, I've always preferred PSA slabs over BGS ones, but that's just me, and may not reflect the opinions of others.

I really couldnt suggest getting an "altered" one, that makes no sense to me, might as well buy a reprint, you MAY never know the difference.

Hey, Gary, when you sent your BGS 9 in and it came back altered, ever considered they MAY have switched it???

Nah,its the same card....
As for wanting a close to mint altered over a BGS 6 or less, i guess i'm to picky...
A BGS 6 or less is going to be in very rough shape!
If i sent my card to PSA i'm sure it would get a 9 or 10, only problem is, i don't like PSA slabs and i don't believe there grading is as harsh as BGS.

So to the OP, i would say get a BGS over a PSA anyday, but don't get an "altered" or people will think your on crack, like myself!

^ ah, but how do you KNOW it's the same card?? ;)
I'm thinking if you sent that card to PSA and they realised it was altered, they'd send it back "too small" if shaved.

Back on topic, it all comes down to the money you want to spend, and assuming you go with a graded card (hopefully), which case you prefer. You could have one, with a nice grade in either slab for around the $500 mark. Give or take.

I personally, wouldnt go below a PSA 7. You can still have something that looks crisp, but may be off centred, or slightly marked, but edges/cornering look good.

I like the psa slabs on vintage/older cards and it's not as bulky as the bgs ones.
Plus I reckon you could get a similar conditioned card in a psa slab cheaper than
what a bgs one would cost. Only because of the general consensus that psa isn't
'thorough' in their grading as Beckett are.

What i'm reading from all this, is viewers choice. I think i'll wait til one comes along for reasonable price and go for it. the 4.5 went for $335 on the bay. I think i would've paid that. The 6 is stil going. The 4.5 did have noticeable cornering though which is why I didn't go for it.
