This could be slightly linked to Gio's thread about the uses for game used jerseys, but it's something I've been thinking about lately anyway, so here is sort of a blog entry from me.

In 1997-98 the first game used jersey cards were released. At huge odds to pull, these cards were extremely valuable and still carry a premium today.
Since then we have seen the phenomenon become so commonplace that we're now getting 2-3 or even more game used cards per pack.

It's great for collectors to have so much available but I wonder if the appreciation has gone. Obviously, not many people are going to want jersey cards of 'scrub' players, but we don't seem to know how lucky we are when we own a card that has an actual piece of a game used jersey worn by Kobe, Lebron, Jordan etc. These are often just $10-40 cards now. When really, it's a piece of a real jersey worn by a legend of the game, that is so easily available to us. We really are lucky in that aspect, especially when you consider how expensive it is to acquire one of these pieces (eg Lebron Miami jersey for $10,000 from Meigray store). Even your 'scrub' or lower-end players jerseys would cost $400-800 if you were to buy it.

Which leads me to another point. Vintage players. Back in the late 90s when jersey cards were being produced I wonder how many people imagined being able to own a card with a jersey of a player from before the 90s. 'Boy, I'd love if they were able to do this with a Julius Erving jersey' they might have said. Or even beyond that. A Jerry West jersey card. That would be truly something special.

And now we have that. And very few people seem to realize how special that actually is.

Game used jerseys are easily available thesedays, with current players wearing many different jerseys during a season (some even wear two per game!). How many do you think were worn back in the 'vintage' era? Not many, I think it's fairly safe to say. So anytime you see a jersey or patch card from someone not from modern times, you've gotta know that it's so much more limited than today's players.

Jerseys of Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - these are not in unlimited supply - even someone like George Mikan who has had many jersey/patch cards in the last few years, it seems almost criminal to have cut up one of his extremely rare jerseys to put out in cards. They could be in a museum, yet they've been made available to everyone to be able to get closer to the game.

I think it's time we start appreciating that fact more.

:)!

Agree and love this thread! This reminds me of one of my fave cards!

It's like anything, if you can get so easy then you will take it for granted, until it is taken away from you. Plus, Panini's vagueness about the authenticity of the jersey doesn't help things; so people wonder "is it really game used", "was it really worn by the player pictured on the card" etc..

i remember getting my first game used card of pippen (fleer nameplates), i thought it was the fricken bees knees..absolutely loved it but like every one ive grown to no longer appreciate the cards any more because there are so many... i had a game used patch of andre kirilenko floating around and i was going to list it for sale but decided to rip it up instead...annihilated the card to get to the jersey piece.

Good thread, just touching on the value side of things, a lot of them now are pretty much worth squat. Glad I sold mine all off before they made so many. I'm starting to get a little peed where you have a card and it is numbered to say 49, then the same card is numbered to 25, then the same card is numbered to 15 and 10 and finally 1. I would like to see the days of jerseys being 1 in 10,000.

I must admit you made me remember a great day not so long ago when I got back into this very addictive hobby. It was only some 5 or so years ago, and having not looked at cards since around 93/94 I had missed the advent of GU'd (and autos for that matter) and in one of my first packs back I pulled a GU Jersey Card of Andre Iguodala and was blown away to think that Iggy had actually worn that piece of jersey that I now had in my hand.

Now 5 years on, and these days for me unless it is a sick patch, then GU's cards just dont pack the same punch as they once did. Thanks for making me remember (and appreciate) the greatness of GU'd jersey cards once again.
Great thread mate

I was thinking about writing this thread and then thinking about this card which made me think that somebody had the nerve to cut up a George Mikan 1950s jersey... but then make it so we can almost all have a piece!

This is one of the best threads. I remember my first ever pack of bball cards ever I got a Shaq GU (which I still have today) and I was shocked that they even had GU cards and I thought it was worth like $150 bucks haha. I still love that card and will forever. I will always like GU and patch cards over autos.

well all you nba guys are lucky with your GU stuff. I think Afl has only ever has only ever done 3 GU cards and they were back in 2003,

My only issue with that card, as with most of Panini's stuff the guarantee is so vague "the enclosed material is guaranteed by Panini America, Inc" for all we know it could be from a Nuggets jersey.
