Moral Dilemma

I have been a victim on many occasions of the old under the table deal outside of eBay, I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the times this has happened, a classic example is you win a card on eBay for a good price only to have it pulled from under your nose because someone has emailed the seller offering a better price. I have cursed the sellers that have done this to me in the past and remember that feeling and how gutted I was.

Have you or would you in the heat of the moment take this step for a must have card for your pc?

its a dirty move, but tbh i think the dirts on the seller if he wants to go that way. if its a must have card i say give it a shot, and if the seller says no then good for him.

there's a point where greed takes over for those sellers especially when they can double almost triple their money.

It's a two way street but as you said it's worth a shot for a card you want.

it is just collecting in the end and if the seller wants to do that, then so be it.

you have to wonder why the underbidder didn't bid higher in the first place to actually win it FAIR AND SQUARE?

No would never, as a buyer, i bid what i am willing to pay and if it goes higher than my bid, i have no issues.


As a seller if someones asks they get ignored or told "should of bid higher"

Ebay auctions are so far from the mark of what a true auction is so if someone is sick of being outbid in the last few seconds then why wouldn't they message the seller. You will probably find most sellers are probably sick of getting bugger all for some cards for exactly the same reason.

There are so many issues on ebay that go against both buyers and sellers

In a real auction, every bidder in the room knows what the last bid was and don't have to deal with a mystery bid that bids and wins the auction in the last 3 seconds Imagine that happening at any other auction !

Yeah but Terry as you said yourself it's not like a real auction so how can anyone fairly compare the two? You really can't and no one using ebay should expect it to be like a real auction.
As much as ebay gives me the shits sometimes it's not their fault, are we really going to blame ebay for people not winning auctions because they didn't bid high enough?

As far as I'm concerned people should set the amount they are willing to pay, bid that at the end of the auction or if you can't be around throw it down straight away and roll with the losses.

Having stuff like snipes etc eliminate some of the ebay bids and reserves too i think

It's quite simple Terry, bid the highest amount you are happy to pay. That way it is exactly like a true auction!

Sorry Dave but it is nothing like a real auction. The last bid called in any auction is called 3/4 times before it is considered sold. Not 3 seconds after you have bid. 1st call..... 2nd call ..... 3rd and final call.... (3 seconds before the end) sorry everyone but we have one Last bid in, no need for 3 calls to end this auction mr Snipe, you win and too bad for the last bidder who may have been willing to bid more

well its true sometimes you are willing to bid more, but didnt anticipate how high the auction would actually go and miss out as you didnt have a chance to adjust your top bid. thats frustrating.

I used to hate that Why do most people get caught out the same way ? because of Sellers who shill most hold back their top bid just in case this is the case ! which takes me back to why i think shill bidding is practiced !

I wonder how many new & old members have missed out on auctions to only see the card resurface at a much higher price by the time they realize how complex ebay is, they are more than likely going to just give up and do something else

Placing a max bid straight away has it's ups & downs, I don't place a max bid straight away because it has led to suspected shilling or it has been bumped up by another buyer until the highest bid is reached, one other method is friends of the seller or just other buyers will place a max bid then remove it to see what the initial max bid is. I believe the proxy system of bidding is open to abuse which is why I choose not to place a max bid straight away.

I have found sniping auctions allows me to win some auctions for a nice price because the initial bidder has failed to place their max or there was just a lack of buyers watching the item but on the other hand I have missed out on many cards because the auction was pulled due to the low price.

Yeah, but at the end of the day, people bid up to the highest price they are happy to pay. If you were willing to bid more, you didn't put in your highest bid.

eBay has it's pros and cons, and like Terry says, it is definitely not like a real auction, but as long as you know how the game is played, then eBay can really have some advantages in terms of getting low prices. Essentially though, you must be there for the auction ending otherwise your wasting your time.

In terms of sellers pulling auction items, I have only ever seen this happen while the auction has not ended yet. I could not see how, legally, a seller could recall an item that has already been sold just because they didn't like the price they got.
