Guys,

Some of you may be aware, Ron has been battling cancer for a number of years. Over the past couple of months, his fight has been drawing to a close. He is now in palliative care at home.

I asked for his permission to let you all know as I'm sure there are quite a few of you who would like to be made aware of this. He is unable to come to the computer, so is not likely to see any messages you leave here for him, but I'd be happy to pass them on (with your permission) to his wife, Shirley when I next email her.

Ron has been a tremendous friend to me in the very short time that I have known him. He's a true gentleman and I'm sure he's been an inspiration to many of the collectors on OCT, as he has been to me.

Cheers,

Naz

That is sad news about Ron for all that know him and for his wife and family. He was a good freind to me and always helped Nathan and i with any requests that we ever had and always was interested in how Nath was going at Cricket. Rons battle has been a long one and he was always a fighter and a true gentleman as nazim said and always willing to help out a fellow collecter.Im sure a lot of our collections in one way or anonther are a lot better because of Ron. Please forward our message to Shirley and our condolences for her and the family .We may have never met Ron personally but i considered him a good freind and a 100% good bloke. It has been a honour to have known him and we could all learn a lot from him in the way he treated fellow collectors not as competition but was willing to help out with his vast knowledge to make our hobby better. Thank you Ron Nathan and i will always remember you and may you fly with the birds.
Steve and Nathan

Just to clarify, Ron is still with us :) though he is in palliative care, so no more treatment! Generally under such circumstances, morphine is administered daily, therefore the person spends most of the time asleep and hopefully pain free. Steve I'll let Shirley know that you and Nathan are thinking of them in this difficult time!

Naz, thanks for doing this - Ron has a lot of friends here doesn't he? :-)

Very occasionally in life your first impression of a person will turn out to be the 100% consensus within a community - however during our brief dealings with Ron we couldn't help but think "thorough gentleman" and is heartwarming to see the similar thoughts posted above. Ron, our thoughts are with you mate, you are certainly a MINT fella :-)

Such sad news for anyone to hear :(
My heart goes out to his loved ones and I hope that there is still time for a miracle to happen.

Thanks for letting us know Nazim, I never dealt with Ron but I read a lot about him. Such a great all round bloke and a great asset to cricket card collecting. I hope when the time comes for him to leave us he will leave in peace, my thoughts are with his family and friends so please let them know if there is anything we can do to help them out we'd definitely do anything we can because I'm sure he was such an important part of this site and I think this site was an important part of his life too.

Naz,

Thanks for letting us know about this. I can say that from myself and all the team here please pass on our thoughts to Ron and his family and please thank him for us, for help making this website the place that it is.

I know he has helped a lot of people here and such generosity and thoughtfulness is never forgotten. There are a lot of people out there who have been helped by Ron and this is something to be very proud of.

While times like this are tough, I always prefer to remember the good times and Ron has given plenty of those to people here!

Cheers
Matt

Naz. Please pass my best wishes onto Ron and Shirley. Ron has filled many a hole in my collection and a nicer person you would not meet. Very sad news to hear and it will be big loss to the OCT cricket collecting community.

I'll be sure to pass on everyone's comments. I'm sure it will be comforting for both Ron and Shirley to know so many people care about them.

Thoughts and best wishes to Ron & his family, one of the true gentlemen on OZCARDS!

Thanks for letting us know Nazim.

Naz, two thumbs up to you mate for throwing open the gates of support through the broader OCT collecting community.

Ron is considered an important member of the "cricket mafia" here on OCT. If you have had the pleasure of dealing with Ron, as I have on many occasions, you have been blessed by dealing with a man of passion for his cricket and a man of his word. These are two ever so important traits in the world of collecting.

Ron is a true collector, and below are the reasons why...

C – Conscious
O – Optimistic
L – Loyalty
L – Longevity
E – Experienced
C – Careful
T – Tenacious
O – Obliging
R – Reliable

Having helped Ron with cards he needed, as well as him helping me with cards I needed, is what collecting is all about..... and a bonus often found is friendship.

Everybody could take a leaf from Ron Edwards book of collecting, as well as his book of life... be humble and respectful of those around you, share what you can but dont give away all your secrets !

There will always be a bit of Ron in my life, both in my collection and in my memories of a kind hearted man.

God Bless Ron, Shirley and family and do hope that the "run to the line" is a peaceful one and one that brings happy memories to his family and friends.

With utter respect
Damian

First of all, a big cheers to Nazim for organising this thread. I see Nazim as another true gentleman on this forum.

Now to Ron,
When I was just starting out collecting a few years ago I had no idea, I was buying the odd card on eBay, but as we know as a 14 year old, cash will not go very far.
Then I started talking to Ron, to start me off he sent me some signed cards for free! As a boy growing up in a world where you rarely get anything given to you, this was a real wow factor. Later on I tried my luck at sending some cards through the mail, with Ron's help with addresses and such I had great success.
Without Ron, I don't believe the forum would be the place it is today, although I never meet him, I think of him as a mate,

Cheers Ron.

Best wishes to Ron and his family. Didn't have any dealings with him personally but always noticed him around the boards, and from reading above can see he is a much valued member.
God Bless.
