Paying With PayPal Gift

Ok, so if someone's selling something and asking for a gift payment, that's fine, but if they're in another Country, who should cover the fees for the payment?

I'd have thought whomever is receiving it covers the fees, yeah?


Also, from what I'm reading gift payments are not covered with buyer protection, but it seems to be the in-thing these days. Has anyone had any issues with paying and not receiving?

1. What fees? Gifts are generally free to send (unless you send too many then they charge you a fee for doing so). I usually cover the fee, when it does popup.

2. I only use gift payments on forums with feedback systems, as when you tell the mods, they take action. eBay payment only.

There's fees if you send outside your own Country, and also if you partially or completely fund it off a credit/debit card. ie, it needs to come from your bank or balance, as well as be sent to your own country in order for them (gifts) to be free.

hmm. last time i used gift internationally (a while ago now) it did not charge me anything. oh well times have changed I guess.

Yeah I sent one a little while ago to NZ and there was a fee. It was actually my first purchase since getting back into collecting, and thought it was normal, lol.

Paypal gift is against site rules here mate. You send via gift, you get burnt, the mods won't be sympathetic! Best thing to do is send via normal payment and add a few bucks extra to cover their fees. You get buyer protection that way! I would only send via gift to certain members I know personally.

That was changed a while ago from memory Norm! They basically changed it to put the onus back on the sender of money saying that gift is fine but the responsibility lies with the person sending the money a gift!

Since getting back into collecting, I've only used gifts and didnt really know what I was doing, lol. but reading all this, I'm starting to sway against it now, and as you say Norm, send to people you know, or are a highly trusted members.



Question then, if someone is preferring a gift payment, and you don't want to send it, and want the security of a REAL payment, if it would incur say $5 fees, or $10 fees, etc, who should cover that?

I mean I would normally factor any/all fees into a price when selling. Say if you wanted to sell something and you want $100 for it, and you know it's going to cost $10 to post, and probably $5 in fees, you should move that price to $115, etc. yeah?

It's up to the seller I guess, usually they should specify if they want the payment as a gift. If so, it's up to the buyer to add the fees if they choose the other payment method. That's my way of doing it. To calculate the correct amount, I initiate a paypal gift payment and it lets you know what the fee is. I cancel it then send it as payment for goods. If that makes any sense lol

They are now trading guidelines. Onus is on the traders to adequately cover themselves.

The general rule is you don't get charged any fees if you are sending money within Australia and it is coming from a bank account. The discussion on who should pay the fees, I believe that is really up to the negotiation between buyer and seller.

My personal view is that PayPal gift is definitely the way to go for cheap items. Most of the cards here are so cheap that I think it is fair for the buyer to pay the 1% fee. Also, say you opt for buyer protection for a transaction, your seller (no matter how reputable) is bound by the same rules as any eBay seller, to protect himself, he will have to post registered. The question now becomes, do you want to cover that postage cost as well if he asks for it? I think a lot of trading here on OCT is based on reputation and sometimes if something goes missing in the mail, it is not really anyone's fault, do we really want to make the seller cough up all the money he got even though he genuinely sent the item and spent money on stamps? if we do, then we have just turned this forum into eBay.

As in money in your PayPal account? If so, then I'd disagree.

I've had a $0.00 balance for a few weeks now, and always use my Bank Account to fund payments, have only been charged a fee for Gift when sending a payment to New Zealand.
