RIP Gold Coast Blaze

See, this is why I dislike the NBL, teams just come and go! Pirates go and Slingers and Dragons come in '06 then Blaze in '07 then Kings, Bullets & Slingers go in '08 then Dragons, Razorbacks/Spirit go in '09 then Kings are back in '10 and now Blaze are on the way out!

The NBL is little bit like a social comp.....teams come and go.....there's a heap of other teams from the 80's and 90's you could add to that list....North Melb Giants, SE Melb Magic, Gold Coast Rollers/Cougars, Canberra Cannons, Geelong Supercats, Hobart Devils, Victoria Titans and Newcastle Falcons. It makes it hard to build up fan loyalty to a team and the comp or even creating rivalries when teams disappear with such regularity.

Every major sport has had a crack at setting up a team on the Gold Coast.....and from an outsiders perspective it looks like a very attractive prospect. Nice weather, reasonable facilities, largish population base. But for some reason (team success being a contributing factor) the Gold Coast region seems to struggle to support any sport long-term.

This is why i don't support the NBL, the people running that place are a joke, I can't see how they haven't learnt from the larger sporting organizations in this country that expanding your competition before you have strong foundation clubs will not work, you can't expect fans to turn out time and time again if you keep taking teams away (see teams listed above) they need to re-invent the league have foundation clubs 2 in Melbourne and 1 each in capital cities.. Make the competition strong and few more talented teams and people may be interested again, plus some private investors like tinkler here in newie would be a great thing, but at the moment he wouldn't go anywhere near this time bomb league...

2 teams in Melbourne has failed several times. I don't think another Melbourne team should be a priority unless potential owners have deep pockets.

There is plenty of strong teams in the NBL who have been strong for many years. 1 team had owners who could no longer abide by Basketball Australia's terms, so they pulled the pin.

The NBL/BA has done the right thing here, by not allowing a team to play when they are at risk of going bust. Several sporting teams in the Gold Coast have come and gone or have been in financial trouble at some point, so this is nothing new. Sporting teams just dont seem to work in the Gold Coast.
