Cardzone, what a joke

How is a small business supposed to work with these rules? The local newsagent or hobby shop wouldn't sell 3 cases or more of every series and $10,00 worth of stock every year.

tak35bne, Card Zone and JHL basically are the same. They both trade out of the same premises by the same person. He is selling the wholesale product in his store at retail price and locking smaller businesses out of the market. It's anti-competitive practices whichever way you look at it.

I agree, if he was selling the wholesale stock at retail prices then that is very wrong indeed. Because the two companies are fundamentally separate but physically co-located I would think it would be a bookwork exercise essentially to send stock from JHL to Cardzone, I mean it would have to be........to do otherwise would really be shonky.

Feel tough now? Maybe go do some flexes and push ups in front of a mirror to be on the safe side.

Agree, one of the few times my hands have typed faster than the mind works. Owen, I offer my apologies to you for that post about my trip to Newcastle and meeting. I did not intend it to be confrontational and for that I am sorry.

Dave

Actually, the main point is to make money. Treating the customer well can certainly help this, but at the end of the day the amount of profit made is obviously the goal.

Wow, when I left this tread at lunch time S#%T was flying around and now I get back to see it hit the fan.

Look let's all face it, not the S*%T, but today’s card collecting is mostly about money whether we like it or not, about Mr Wang it’s sad to hear that a lot of people are not happy with him because of the level of service they receive for the amount of money they spend, people are losing his trust due to him not being honest, this is sad and not really a way to run a buissiness.
I think it is Select’s fault that this is all happening, the cases should be distributed fairly to all retailers at the same cost.

the only time i went into cardzone all i saw was cases being busted. and cards being sorted lol.

not much selling.

wow "Days of our lives" eat your heart out...
Card collecting has been about a few things, Money, Money, Money and collecting, nothing more nothing less
If Owen wants to produce a magazine he can, If Steve Wang wants to sell cases for a huge profit he can, If i want to purchase Owen's magazine and purchase cards form Steve Wang, guess what, I CAN...
The more people involved the better whether, they are selling, buying or creating a forum(OZT) , magazine, its a postive for the industry, with any industry there will be good and bad...

It is not crap. I agree with most of what Owen wrote. I emailed JHL several times after speaking to Select. Rang JHL several times and then to be told I have to purchase $3500 worth of series 1 to access series 2 AFL is crap. Its bad business or smart for him but bad for the hobby.

Dr Grange

Everyone is forgetting Series 2 is a limited release of 300 cases & I'm sure all the distributors never get as many cases as they want or could sell.
They support all products that are released year in year out & should be protected by Select & JHL for their loyalty. If Select or JHL were to sell to every Tom Dick or Harry who only wants to sell a few boxes or cases at markets of their PREMIUM product, they would be doing a disservice to the loyal resellers. In all industries regardless of what you sell a limited product is only available to the customers who spend big $$$ with them not to the small customers who only want the premium product at lowest price. Those buyer have to go to their opposition (reseller who gets stock) to get that product. It's called looking after your best customers, If you want to play with the big boys you have to prove yourself first & also spend & invest $$$ like they have done for years. To many flyby nighters have devalued products by dumping them when the going gets tuff.

For a business to be running for as long as cardzone has he definately must be doing a hell of a lot of good things more than he is doing the wrong things otherwise he wouldn`t be as successful as he is ...

If he so calls constantly rips people off I am sure he wouldn`t be still as successful as he is ....

Yes some of his prices are over and above what they should be but what right do we have to say what the price should be ... Do we have the stock that he has spent his money on and purchased .....

If you don`t want to pay as much as he is charging don`t buy the product ...Does he have a gun to your hear ???
I guess not ....
I can tell you that if I was in the position he is and had the money he has I certainly would be doing exactly what he does and would be trying to make as much money as he does .

I am sure if you all had the money and could buy in bulk and sit on stock for 10 to 20 years you surely wouldn`t sell the cards at the price you purchased them for in the first place ....

It doesn`t matter what business you are in weather it is trading cards or a large supermarket chain or even a small corner store it is always a gamble to some extent when you outlay money if the stock is all going to sell or not ....

Why is it so much of a problem to a minority of people that someone should be able to make a profit on something he obviously enjoys doing and just happens to be his business .....

You don`t operate a business to lose money ....

Thanks George for your input. I am no fly by nighter and agree some people do dump stock at the whim of doing it tough. All I wanted to do was stock product that would have been popular in Adelaide, for my customers who will not go with anyone else if they cannot get the stock. Select and hobbyists are the ones who miss out. Technically I will stock another product that my customers will enjoy buying and busting. But unlike some market retailers/stores not only do I run my hobby business to make a little bit on the side I do it because I LOVE the hobby. I like to see customers get what they want.

When other purchasers who haven only recently purchased Select in the last year or two dont need to purchase Series 1 then why me??? Select Series 2 didnt SELL OUT last year so being short numbered cases wasn't that much of a demand?? I wonder why?

and to everyone else's opinions I respect them. At no time have I attacked how much profit someone makes or how they make the profit. Like a fair few people I have spoken to Select/JHL need to re-think their business plans and getting their product out their. I have never even been a Hater or tall poppy syndrome so good luck to him if he makes $10 a box or $100 a box. I just want to be given the chance to supply other hobbyists the opportunity to bust the AFL range at a normal price which they would be comfortably with.

Brett I never said you are a fly by nighter... Select & JHL would get calls all the time wanting their LTD release products at wholesale prices. Your best bet would be to build a strong relationship with one of the resellers who will supply you the product you want at a small mark-up on the wholesale price every year.
Also as a reseller you must sell common sets & inserts to your customers which you can get off the same seller at a cheaper price than cardzone thus servicing your customers with a better service & price. It's all about building up a relationship & securing a reliable supplier who can service your needs. In the long run you will find this the better option till you can build up your own hobby business where you need to buy a lot of & all products not just Series 2.

As collectors we all want more product for less $$$ but we have to be mindful that we don't devalue the product at the same time. Good luck in your Hobby Business & I hope you can resolve your problems with supply of the products you want to sell to your customers.

Brett, What price have you been quoted??

Never got quoted a price after weeks of emails and calls. Going to have a chat to someone in Adelaide later this week. Who like George said above is a reseller if I can get a good enough deal so I can pass on to my customers. Why's that Eddy or Justin?

Mr. P, many of us have our collecting shop we go to, otherwise called reseller. If your stuck for a line look up Todays Collectables, at Caloundra. Sunshine Coast.QLD. Darren may help you or at least give you considered advice on how to move your situation forward. Nice guy and a attribute to the card community. Best of luck.

Just wanted to compare when we get our prices.

I can't see ACCC being an issue - there are plenty of businesses where the same company handles manufacturing, distribution and retail. I'm not an AFL collector but it sounds like the 2012 Draft Prospects release was done in that manner. It is just an accounting exercise to keep everything going.

Cardzone/JHL does have an advantage because as stock of a release dwindles it is able to increase wholesale price as well as get access to the most amount of remaining stock. I don't think there would be any legal reason JHL as exclusive distributor could not decide to make Cardzone the exclusive retailer - it could be worse!
