Card Grading

^^exactly what i was about to say!

Once again - nothing against these guys and im not trying to get into an argument here but i wont be send my cards for grading. Just my opinion;)

That's what I was saying, if a guernsey is signed at a game and then another bought through the club with authenticity certs, surely it would hold more value.

Just because we're not used to grading cards, etc doesnt mean we should not encourage it.

At the end of the day, its up to the individual (regardless if theyre an NBA or NRL collector) if they want theyre cards slabbed.
I know if i was to purchase say a Dermott Brereton or Gary Ablett RC or something, Id probably pay a premium if the card
was in the condition i was after. And if i didnt want to keep it in a slab, id simply just break it out.
And I guess thats what these guys are trying to provide. I understand that they do not have the reputation of
a BGS or a PSA, but they too had to start from somewhere, right?

These guys are currently offering a 2 for 1 offer thru ebay. So i sent off a couple of cards to see what theyre about.
Will post once i get them back

Yeah please do keep us posted, I'm sure there's others interested in knowing too.

It's obviously targeting our Aussie market (so AFL, NRL, etc, etc) and not something we could market to overseas' collectors, but if they build enough rep, they could be really good for the Aussie hobbies.

I've opened up a can of worms:oops: As a collector who collects for the love of the hobby I don't see myself paying to encase one of my gems. I can protect the card myself with hard cases or top loaders. As for certificate of Authenticity it's only a piece of paper that is not worth much unless you have received it yourself when the item was originally released because many a things have been copied & counterfeited before. In the end it's buyer beware & comes down to how well you know your hobby & make sure you do your research first. As for grading I personally would not pay more for a Bradman signature card that was graded as to one that wasn't grade of the same condition. Most of the High value cards are well looked after by someone who knows the true value of what they have. :)

I grade my cards myself FREE and if the customer is not happy then they can go and buy from RARECOLLECTABLES FROM EBAY (FAIRFIELD MARKETS) he is heaps cheaper then me ! ha ha lol

Firstly, all grading is, is youre paying for an "expert opinion" on the condition of the card. Its subjective.
But its there for those that want it. Now i personally dont agree with the use of grading on certain cards
(newer issues, low numbered etc) but i believe it serves its purpose when buying older or vintage cards.
Especially since this hobby is reliant on buying/trading online, i think most of you would agree that in sometime
or another youve received a card in a less favourable condition than the scans/pics have led you to believe.

Wow - you really remember the first card you ever pulled? Thats pretty cool Hatter.

God's honest truth.

First NRL tazo I ever pulled was a Wesser if anyone is interested. LOL!

And sorry, grading vs price. I'm just a collector who does it for the fun and memories. Once $$$ values get bandied around, I lose some interest. Don't get me wrong, I respect prices, but it's not my caper. I'm from the old school: got it, got it, got it...need it, swap you...

I agree that there could be some value in grading older and or vintage cards and yep have received cards that did not look like the pictures posted to descrcibe them when bought.

Cheers

I initially wondered what this "grading" business was all about? Grading, to me, would be just that, judging the condition of the card. I looked over the web site and found that that's all it is!!!
I already know the condition of all my cards, I only buy mint cards and all cards I get from packs are straight into albums and remain mint. I understand it's big in the US, I can appreciate older cards needing appraisal in certain circumstances.....but really, how many Australian collectors are going to rely on, or make a purchase decision, on this guy's say so???

Grading when done properly is grading and authentication (whether the card is legit or fake/reprint etc).

If I can put my 2 cents worth in. I reckon as slabbing isn't commonplace in NRL collecting, getting it done would add just as much price as the Ebay IP sig sellers that print their own COA. It may change if that card grading co goes gang busters but don't see it happening

The card grader guy was at Parramatta on Sunday and I had a quick look. Wasn't much activity around the table. Noticed a few cased Scanlens cards ('74 or '75 vintage). They were, if I may put my grading cap on, decidedly un-mint - soft corners and edges, creasing. I still don't get it.

What were the grades for them?

How did they have them graded??

Sorry, I should have mentioned, oddly enough the Scanlens cards were marked as "ungraded". They had a few NBA cards that had a marking of 10 out of 10, they were obviously new and mint, but they didn't have many cards displayed.
