hey all

i really used to love this guy... he was once, after kobe, the most clutch player in the league when he played for the bulls

check out the drop off in stats - keep in mind he now earns $11.6M... i reckon its a typical nba situation where complacency kicks in once the player gets the big contract:
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ben_gordon/career_stats.html

these days you barely hear about him - i always was a firm believer that the bulls made the wrong decision in letting him go and keeping luol deng - i guess they knew what they were doing... he is in effect been reduced to a bench guy, has only started in 19 of the pistons 39 games, with the highest salary on the detroit roster by a long way - this year $11.6M and next year $12.4M... producing 12ppg, 2apg, 2rpg. solid 41%3pt, in 27mpg... absolutely not good enough for what he is earning

He will likely become a valuable veteran bench contributor towards the end of his career due to his solid shooting ability when he realises that he's majorly rich but hasnt had any success whatsoever from a professional basketball team perspective

thoughts??

First of all, He was never the second best clutch player in the NBA either. Pretty sure Melo is the best clutch guy in the NBA.

secondly, He tied the NBA record for most consecutive 3-pointers and dropped 45 on the Nuggets just 2 weeks ago.... He's still relevant, It's just a shame he's on such a terrible team.

Agree to both. Shame he's dropped off a bit, but he is still a flat out gun. Needs be in a better situation. I have no doubt he'll get back on to a contender at some stage.

His numbers are down a little due to minutes + lower fg % + a junky team and coming off the bench.

Would love to see him back up to 20ppg again.

probably not the best source i know but here is a sampling of what he used to produce - as a rookie!

the guy can shoot and i did mention that in my post, so these games where he goes off are not a suprise... most guys in the league will go off at some point but to do it consistently - well thats what makes all the difference

if you weren't joking about melo id think you have gone stark raving mad... cant even remember the last time melo did anything significant during normal gametime, let alone clutch... man the way he is playing at the moment, he's probably not even the best or most productive player on a team that is on the cusp of either making or missing the playoffs...

hmmm... ill have to debate your point about him playing so poorly because he is on a junky team - he should be blowing up on a junky team! he has rookie brandon knight playing more minutes than he is... he is coming off the bench for a reason and it's because he has been playing rubbish - they didnt sign him to a $55M contract to come off the bench i'll give you the tip... would have to be the most expensive bench player in the league or right up there for sure

he'll never shoot a high % just due to the way he plays, shooter not slasher - he'll continue however to always have solid 3pt%... his days of 20ppg are unfortunately over

I should add, that I certainly do not agree with Melo being a great clutch player also. He struggles.

So why the hate on BG anyway Branko? Just bored? (serious question)

It does'nt always work the way you want it by being on a junky team. Does'nt mean you'll have better numbers necessarily. You always need plays for you and BG has always shared his minutes coz the Pistons had Rip and a bunch of guards all sharing time.

I did'nt say he'd get back to 20ppg, it is unlikely, I said I'd love to see it. He is one of the better shooters in the League and I'd say when his contract is up he'll hopefully be giving quality minutes to a contender.

Get him on the end of some Steve Nash's passing and we'll see thos numbers climb.

He has an auto logoman on ebay for $220 that a guy can't sell. Amazing considering what his rookie stuff used to go for.

Come on BG, get it going again:)

For starters, Hell yeah I'm serious about Melo. Melo has the highest shooting percentage in clutch plays based on the amount of shots he takes.

And I'm pretty sure NBA.com hasn't made a Top 10 for Ben Gordon's clutch shots....

Melo IS the best clutch player in the league.

Amen to that!

You know if Carmelo cared more about defence and shooting for the other 47 minutes of the game maybe he wouldn't be needed for those clutch shots. Also I'm pretty sure Kobe and Durant are both better clutch players than Carmelo.
I totally agree, I'd be surprised is Melo can even spell defense. But as for Kobe & Durant, No. Kobe has THE WORST shooting percentage on clutch shots or maybe LeBron, I'd have to look that one up, and Durant simply hasn't taken enough to really be in the discussion.

Just my two cents worth...both Ben Gordon AND Melo would be watching either Kobe or Durant take the last shot to win the game if I was coach. Kobe may have lower %, but in terms of actual number of game winners, he cannot be compared with any other active player, and Durant could be this level of player, in the future, as well. Both of them (and Melo) have the ability to get a quality (if not under pressure) shot off in the last 3 seconds. The same cannot be said for Ben Gordon. The guy is playing off the bench behind a rookie (Knight) and a solid combo guard (Stuckey) and the reason he is not a legitimate starter in the NBA is because he is too small at 6'3 to play SG and he absolutely does not have the skills (or mindset) to play PG, so 1st guard off the bench is basically his best position, which for a guy making over $11M/yr is such a waste of money. Dumars blew it the off season he signed Gordon and Charlie Villanueva to big money contracts, as neither guy has done jack in the last two years.

You are dead on about Mello mate. This article backs it up with stats;

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/24200/the-truth-about-kobe-bryant-in-crunch-time
YES!!!! I was looking for that article earlier... good find.

This pretty much closes the argument. You cant see it there but Kobe is 6th from the bottom with 31%.... Melo is right at the top with 47%

There it is folks.

It's a it of a shame about Gordon because he can be a 20 point scorer a night (like he already has been) if he just plays well every night, which will lead to more minutes etc.
