How do you categorize your collection?

I downloaded the Beckett list of Mikan's card into a Excel file and then went from there. I use the sort function to order them by year and alphabetically. I've got columns with a short description, then card number, any card features (RC, Auto, Memorabilia etc.) and then numbering. I've also got a column that states the 'status' of the card within my collection; got, need, bidding, won, watching.
Once I've got them in order I break up the actual cards into piles, if you will, based on the size of card or the card holder; graded cards, one-touch, top loaders and irregular sized cards.
And believe it or not, but I'm an organised guy.

With my lesser MJs they are in a box in top loaders. I was thinking of getting a few of those pages that hold 6 top loaders in them (i saw on this forum a while back a thread). I do not really have a system for them lol. I should though.
My fleer is easy as they are organised in checklist order usually.

My Hodges are in a small folder for Numbered Base, Inserts, Toploaders in a shoe box for GU Auto, Exquiste RPA's have there own box 
, SP Patches, Auto's, 1/1's are in One Touches in a shoe box! Jason Thompson stuff, better stuff is on stands in my glass cabinet and base are in folder with lesser cards in a shoebox in Toploaders and One touches... an absolute rabble!

That's how I do em....... and I put my oddballs at the back.
With Wesley Matthews, I have all autos, or cards numbered to 10 or less in one touches or screw downs and in a filing box. Generally in order of release. The base and numbered cards over 10 are in a folder in order of release.
My Chuck Person collection are all fairly low end so I have them in a 280 card folder in the same order as Beckett. Is annoying when I get a card from early in his career, but lets be honest sorting and filing cards is part of what I enjoy about the hobby so reordering is fun for me.
(Mental note: Get out more).

I think i'll go with the year/brand set up, i'll have to go on Beckett and sort out the list (I'm dreading this).
I'm thinking the best and easiest way would be to have enough 9 card pages where you can place your cards in their correct spot in the folder then there's no need to reshuffle everything when you get a new card from early in the players career.
Might need a few more sleeves since Payton has 2,290

Yeah...... that's what I forgot to mention. DO NOT just shove your cards in without leaving spaces lol...... additionally, I start a new brand on a new page... this way if for some reason I missed a card I can easily move things around. Leaves a lot of empty spaces yes, but saves you a lot of headaches too
I'd suppose you say I'm somewhat obsessive-compulsive with how my pc's are organised. First chronologically by year/season, Alphabetically by product (according to beckett listings). Within product - if more than one card from the regular set (subsets) - numerically, base set parallels from easiest to hardest, inserts alphabetically (for insert parallels see base set parallels). When it comes to jersey swatch variations - alphabetically by the swatch colour. where I have multiples of a serial #'d card - numerically. As i said - somewhat OCD.

Good luck sorting them all out, I printed out the entire Beckett checklist in chronological order off their old site back in 2005 as well as using copy and paste to add the list to my site. I cross the cards off the 30 page list with a highlighter as they come in and then store them in 3 x 5000ct boxes in that same order, I also have bookmarks in the 5000ct boxes to indicate each page number so I can cross reference.
As the new product comes in I just update the list as required and every single card is at least in a top loader but the higher end stuff is obviously in magnetic holders. It took a good week or two but it was worth it in the end. If I ever need to find a certain card I can just go straight to that list and use the bookmarks to find it in the box.

For me its pretty much the same as most on here, I'd downloaded the beckett list of all spurs cards, formatted it for excel by year then brand then set name then numerical with inserts at the end. All the base and low level inserts that don't warrant a toploader go in 5000 cnt boxes, separated by year by index tabs, and all other gu/sigs etc sit in the shoebox style boxes. It takes ages to get it all sorted initially but makes it so easy to find a card or add new ones in.
