1948 Kellogg's PEP PSA 5

Chronologically its Mikan's second card behind his famous Bowman 1948 Rookie Card. While its not an auto, a patch or serially numbered, its probably the best of my Mikan's so far...

It is from a box of Kellogg's PEP

According to Wikipedia, "Kellogg's Pep was a brand of whole-wheat breakfast cereal produced by the Kellogg Company, and introduced in 1923. Pep was a long-running rival to Wheaties, and also the sponsor of Mutual Radio's Superman radio series"

Might be the second behind Bowman - but I guess technically it's still a Mikan RC! haven't even seen any of those Pep card before and I collect that sort of stuff! Great grade on it too for a card that age! Great way to bring up the ton Matt!
 
The Kellogg's card is awesome. Love seeing oddball cards of that nature, and it's got a good grade considering the age!

Its a very bold design with rich colours; a shame all the PEP cards were black and white.

Thanks Nino. The black and white photography makes it seem really old to me; even in other Mikan cards in which the photo of him is black and white the remainder of the card is coloured which brings it to life.

Thanks Adam, the ton was hard work and I'm pretty happy that the PEP was #100.

It's interesting to think just 60 years ago professional basketball was in its infancy and had no real national following; just shows how amazing Mikan's feats at DePaul were that he was considered for this series.

I started with a flurry, the first 50 was McCullum-esque but its been a slow grind to 100, more like Mark Richardson!

Thanks Skip; I think I'll pass on the technicality and give the Bowman the title of sole Mikan RC. I'll get one soon enough ;)

Mikan is the only basketball player in this set (the checklist along with photos can be seen here: Untitled Document). That site also shows the pins that Kellogg's PEP had, which were far more popular and of which many more than the photos remain; a quick search on eBay finds hundreds of them.

There is a BIN PSA 7 and a BIN PSA 8 on eBay of Mikan right now, but both have an extra zero more on the end than how much I paid for my PSA 5; in fact a couple of PSA 2 with BIN's that are higher or comparable to what I paid.

Its a very sweet card Terry, and very worthy of being #100, although with Mikan #99 might have been the most important number!

Mikan only has 181 (excluding printing plates) cards listed in Becketts, so 100 means I've got 55% of his cards.

I've completely forgotten to tell you all whats written on the back; its a little bio of Mikan

All Time All American basketball center while student at DePaul University of Chicago . Six Feet, nine inches tall, Mikan was one of greatest scorers ever in college basketball and carried on as a leading scorer in National basketball league

Now that tells you just how old it is: no mention of the Minneapolis Lakers or the BAA/NBA. Its also very interesting he's listed as 6'9 on the card; I've never seen anything but 6'10 before.
 
Thats Kelloggs card is huge (not literally of course). And a 5 is so good for something so easily damaged in a cereal box.
