Hey everyone! hope all is well where ever u are:wave:
OK to cut a long story short...i put my Pro Canon Camera and Lenses on Gumtree yesterday hoping to bypass Ebay/Paypal etc in a bid to sell to someone in Perth so i can drop off or they can pick up in person so they can see the item for themself so there's no refunds and stuff later on...im selling my gear for $4000ono and a guy in the UK has said he'll pay the full amount plus $300 shipping costs and he'll pay thru paypal...should i even go there??? with all the loopholes and sketchy people on Ebay lately im worried if i do this deal and send out camera that later on i may get a paypal claim and lose somehow for whatever reason:( im pretty confident that if i send with full registered international shipping with full insurance ill be ok that end in case it gets damaged or something but the whole paypal payment has made me worried ill lose both...i understand Gumtree won't cover or protect me and this guy seems legit as we have been emailling back and forth and he wants me to send a payment request thru if i want to do the deal coz he doesnt want to miss out, he has also asked for me for more pics and persued this item urgently even though it clearly states on the description pick up or drop off only...
is this more trouble than what its worth???? some instant paypal would be super handy and the item sold and done with but is there a high chance i could lose everything....

any help or advice would be greatly helpful!

thanks in advance

LeRoy

Buyer beware mate. Can you please list some of the emails he has sent so maybe some of us on here can pick up on his tone/attitude.

Is he being pushy? Does he have an ebay account that you can email him through? Perhaps that way you can check his feedback and he would need to log in to his account to respond to your ebay email. Obviously he could use a good-looking account belonging to someone who trusts him enough to give their log in details to him.

Just looking out for you, thats some serious cash there. If he's genuine then he'll at least understand your precautionary steps. Obviously if he is for real then he is also placing a lot of trust in you with his payment. Is this camera worth more than your selling price? Why does he have to source it from south west of Australia? Surely there's one closer to his home.

Suggest to the guy that if he knows someone local that he can send them the money to pick it up. If he insists on Paypal, tell him it will have to be paid as a gift and that no other option for payment is available. Good luck with it Leroy

Maybe you have someone you know and trust in the UK and you can send it through them.

I should have elaborated before.

I have sold heaps of things on Gumtree before, including my car, and have found almost every time, I get contacted by someone overseas who wants to buy it. And usually they never haggle on price and have a simple way to organize the delivery. In most cases they offer credit card payment and say they will have someone arrange freight for me, but without a doubt they are all dodgy. In this case, it could be legit, but it could go really bad too.

I think the gift option suggested above is your only choice if you really want to do it. But I just think, on an item worth that much, if you don't ask for a better deal, you are up to something

Maybe look into a Western Union Money Transfer mate

Send Money to Australia - Western Union - Money Transfer

I have done it once in sending payment to China. You go to your post office fill out a form of the person's name and location the payment is going to and the specified amount, the person sending payment pay's the post office and is given a receipt number (MTCN). This MTCN is given to you (the seller) and when you go to your post office to claim the payment you let them know the receipt number (MTCN) and show ID to claim payment.

No risk on the seller side of things for you. I have only been a sender of payment once, never a receiver. But may be worth looking into.

I would avoid it TBH unless he's willing to take the risk of sending by gift or Western Union. There is also the other option of using Escrow.com, though you wouldn't get your money until he has received the goods; I've used it to sell many domains before with no issues, but never sold any tangible items, so worth checking that out first.

thanks for your imput and help guys:v:
