Hi everyone,

Was reading Nick's thread about possibly putting up his Payton PC for sale....and it got me thinking back to one of the "Pearls of Wisdom" that someone once said to me:

"You don't have to have every card made for your PC player to have a great collection".

Sure I took this persons comment with a grain of salt and purchased lots and lots of cards of my player PC's but thinking back now....there is a lot of truth in that statement.

Many years down the track it eventually dawned on me that this person was right......do I need every card.....nope....I can still have an amazing collection with a small number of cards.

The old quality over quantity.

Another one was "Wait till the hype dies down to buy a card". I recently saw a card I purchased for about $50 a few days after release sell for $6 recently on eBay. If I had waited......id be much better off....why didn't I wait.....well because i'm inpatient!

What are some of the other "Pearls of Wisdom" that you have been given in relation to collecting.

Love to hear them!

Cheers
Matt

I fully agree with quality over quantity. I apply that to my JR pc and high-end. I just picked up a reflections that sold for 60+ in the past for less than a cup of coffee.

Finding funds to fund a pc isn't easy either. My advice would be stock up on cheap cards and when the time is right sell them at a profit to fund your pc.

1. Don't piss off the mods
2. Follow the rules
3. Don't send paypal gift
4. Don't piss off the mods
5. Do your research, use the search button. Use ebays completed items
6. Unless 10 rule is only if they cannot provide enough other feedback. Use ebay feedback and feedback from other sites.
7. If it is too good to be true it probably is
8. Don't piss off the mods

My Latest is that "Game Worn Memorabilia is Much better than Cards"

the Select - ESP license changeover has probably been the reason, and that game worn stuff was more scarce before but what ESP has been producing is substandard to the old Select Days.

Will give this a bump and keep on the good side of at least one mod!

"Do what keeps the hobby interesting and fun for you"

"Chase what you can afford"

"Try to never view cards as an investment"

"Buy the PC cards you need instead of the boxes you'll (more than likely) regret"

"Don't buy the hype"

"Buy the PC cards you need instead of the boxes you'll (more than likely) regret"

This is the main one I follow, a lot of times it gets boring without busting anything and I do get tempted to put in an order at DA. But I usually just add everything I want to the cart then consider the PC cards I could buy instead, that has kept me away almost a year now and Ive ended up with a much better PC :)

Also I stay far away from any rookies whose autos are selling for $100+, since 99% of the time that will be its peak and can be had for a lot less by next year

Remember that when you do buy a box of cards it is like going to the TAB and placing $100 on the next favourite to win.

It will not always win and you will not always get the case hit or even a decent hit from that box of cards so be prepared to be disappointed.

Something that helps me is something an old timer said when I was a kid...he reckoned that when you're trying to achieve your goal, you've got to constantly ask yourself if it's you driving toward the goal or if it's the goal driving you.

Not really good english there, but what it means to me is living within your means, not being unrealistic/overly greedy and trying to remember what your priorities are. Good in theory, and the times I've managed to follow it I'm always okay.

Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of newbies on the scene are jumping from collecting one thing to another. Make your mind up about what you want before you get heavily involved! Take your time to see what/who you like. That will save you time selling and buying cards.
