After seeing the Thread posted by loafic (http://www.ozcardtrader.com.au/forum/maildays-card-pics-basketball/34191-autos-i-obtained-person-melbourne-2001-gr8-fun.html)

I thought it might be cool to get other peoples experiences when it comes to meeting Basketball players.

Here is mine,

in 1996 i was playing rep. ball at Bankstown and we were invited by Nike to have a training session with Jason Kidd. We were told not to ask for autographs, but i got the 1 card signed and met him again at the Olypmics and got the pics.

Also met a few of the players from the olympic team when they were in Sydney.

well my players aren't nba superstars but pretty cool nonetheless...

I work out at the same gym as the 36ers so i regularly chat with the guys when i see them after they workout...i remember the first time i saw brett maher cycling on the bike next to me i was as tongue tied as a girl meeting justin timberlake! he was always my hero watching the nbl in the 90's and early 00's.

only the other day i trained next to Luke Schenscher and damn he is a big boy! he was killing himself, doing hard riding sesions on the bikes for about 5 minutes then smashing the versa-climber for 2 minutes (simulates rock climbing kinda, hardest bloody machine in the gym i reckon), he mustve done about 10 sets of this during the time i was there...the dude is FIT.

Meet Kobe Bryant back in 98 when he was here doing a Adidas promotion with Andrew Gaze in front of the Sydney Opera house. Back then he was hardly a household name here and being a MJ fan i wasn't really hot about getting an auto of a player who i didn't collect.

Don't no how much times have changed but he was very polite with the fans and did honour all autograph request since there was hardly a crowd watching. I actually got a photo with him somewhere, i'll try to scan it up if i manage to find it.

I met Jason Kidd and Hersey Hawkins at the NBA Jam Session at Challenge Stadium in Perth in about 1994. Both very friendly guys.

Didn't have a camera to get any pics though

Met Gilbert Arenas at the NBA store in NY a couple of years back - great bloke.

Other than that met the Tassie Devils players a bunch of times when that team existed lol

Kareem abdul Jabbar stands out for me, was doing the adidas black top promo in Melbourne. Extremely polite and honourable. Met danny manning, stacey king, Hakeem Olajuwon, scott brooks, dee brown. Abdul Jabbar is still the man!! Got auto's of all of them but i got abdul to sign a college picture of him i ripped out of beckett. He cracked up laughing and showed his wife, talking about the guys in the picture when they all had hair. HE is one of the best.

thanks for the great stories guys

i also met the And 1 tour team last year and got the Handle mag signed by the whole team plus a few pics.

I had a not so great experience with Kareem. I was on a basketball tour with a team around 1990 and saw Kareem at LAX airport, unloading his luggage from a car, including skiis (can you imagine him skiing down the slopes! ha). Anyway, a couple of the guys from the team took some photos, so I ran over to grab a photo, took one, and then he just stared at me, a real scary death stare as if he was going to rip my insides out  I slowly moved away. Scared the be-jesus out of me, I was only 14 at the time!!:lol:

Not sure where that photo is, I should try and dig it out and scan it up.

met Luc Longley,Detlef Schrempf in Melbourne plus 3 Laker girls..
also met Michelle Timms in Brisbane for this Dr Pepper 3 on 3 comp back in 1999..she picked me out of the crowd and I was in a 3 point contest against her...man i was young

shane heal was at the sydney dr pepper 3on3 comp

my mate beat him by 1 in the shoot out and heal got pissed and wanted to challenge him again.

shane heal got angry?.....lol ive never seen him loose his cool before.....i mean..like yeah

after my mate beat him, he was calling out from the crowd say shane was the hammer and he was a bulldozer. so i think he wanted another go at him

then wen they took a pic for a local paper he told my mate to get off the drugs

hahahahahha

Use to see her every weekend back in the day at my local league stadium, she was pretty active there for years.

A mate of mine had a similar experience with Heal. He picked him out of the crowd for a 3 point shootout. Anyway, Paul hit like his first four from three and Heal gave him a stair down as if to say 'you're not showing me up' and started making his shots.

Same mate met Baron Davis at an Airport in the States between road games, he went up and asked for an Auto, said Davis wasn't very approachable, signed something for him but didn't really pay him no mind. Must suck for these guys, as great as it is that they're being paid to do what they love, the constant travelling on the road must wear them down.

At least that's the point I argued being a fan!

ive had quite a few experiences and michele timms and andrew gaze are still by far the nicest folks in the entire world.
my negative experience was a few years back in vegas and i saw donyell marshall, and whilst i explained that i was from australia and collected many of his cards etc, he kind of scoffed and stuff and i just said dont worry about a photo. Quite deflating, as i didnt make a big song or dance and stuff.
Bumping into a few boomers and some of the USA players at a nightclub was memorable, kind of amusing.
