I've been seeing a lot of the latest n greatest players in the maildays section, Kyrie, Kobe, Durantula, the King himself and all sorts of rookies.... I thought I'd throw together an old school mailday full of those old school geezers who count as hobby box hits even though many collectors don't really know who they are....

Starting off with base and inserts...

1975 Topps Cleveland Cavaliers Team Card

No, I'm not a Cavs fan but I am a big Bill Fitch fan. This roster formed the nucleus of the team in 75-76 which made it to the Eastern Conference Finals and Bill won coach of the year in the Cavs first ever playoff appearance.

Michael Ray Richardson - Retro Star Ruby /150

That silver shimmer finish is so mesmerising!

Walt Frazier Metal Universe /100

They really should use colour photos with all these fancy finishing touches, right?

Another high scoring guard who could hand out assists and play lock down defense. More all NBA 1st Team selections than I've had hot breakfasts...

Wilt Chamberlian Retro Legacy /100

The least blinged up insert of them all and probably the nicest too.

We all know whow legendary this guy is - just remember he AVERAGED OVER 50ppg and 25rpg in his third NBA season. Perhaps more incredibly he had one year where he almost averaged 9apg and 2.5women... :-P

1948 Bowman
The King of old school cards. This one describes a cut from an off ball pick when the ball is in the high post, however the language on the back is quite humorous as they don't even mention 'pick' or 'screen'...

The Autos

Bob Love Elusive Ink auto
High scoring Bulls forward and one of only 4 Bulls players to have his jersey number retired (Jordan, Pippen, Sloan and Mr B Love). Unlike the Sac Kings who have now retired the jersey numbers for Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic!!!!

Bobby Jones Prizm auto
Played 12 seasons with 10 All NBA 1st Team Defensive selections and one second team selection. Pioneered the 6th man role and won the first ever 6th man award in 1983 aong with his only ever championship (Larry Bird had a bad year).

Sam Perkins SPX Signature Block
The Big Smooth. This guys was so cool and laid back on the court you always wondered if he was half asleep. One of the early big men to play as a stretch 4 or 5 the big fella could shoot with the best of them and eeked out a career by averaging almost as many 3PA as rebounds!

Mo Cheeks Brilliance auto /199
I'm really surprised he isn't nicknamed Chubby but anyway.... Could run an offene and was a real ball hawk who also racked up the steals and All NBA Defensive honours. Long time 76er who also got his only ring in '83.

Darryl Dawkins Crusade Majestic auto /199
Chocolate Thunder was on those 76er squads with Bobby and Mo but was traded for a draft pick the year before they won the NBA Championship. Ouch!

Michael Ray Richardson Fleer GOTG auto
Nice big on card autos are what it's about and these old GOTG autos deliver.

A big combo guard who could, pass, score and play intense D. 2 x All NBA 1st Team Defensive selections, led the league in steals 4 times and assists once.

Infamously blackballed from the league after failing the doping test on five separate occasions. Since then has gone on to insult all and sundry - including Chris Mullin. He'd make for an interesting interview and biography...

Mark Eaton Treasured Ink /199
This guy basically invened shot-blocking. One of the best defensive big men of all time - and was rocking the full beard before it was even cool!

Lou Hudson Old School auto /25
Black with silver sharpie is always a classic combination. Possible HOF candidate after years of putting up big scoring numbers...

Fat Lever
One of the most under-appreciated do it all guards of all time. Had 4 years with a stat line of 18ppg, 9rpg, 8apg and 2.5spg. The great all-rounder...my type of player.

Select auto
So nice I bought it thrice (accidentallY)

NT Material Treasures /99

SPA Letterman /50
Yep, going for one long chase with 'Arizona State'

Intrigue patch auto /10
Chunky patch but two dark colours on a dark background doesn't work overly well... And out of all the Fat Lever autographed cards they put the sticker auto on which one?????

George 'Iceman' Gervin Elite Die Cut Status auto /44
Love the foil touches on this card, coming to really like the Elite product. Nice smooth finish for a really smooth scoring machine...

Cedric 'Cornbread' Maxwell NT Notable Nicknames /99
Love an on card auto and love an on card inscription even more. Won two rings and was Finals MVP - heart and soul of those Celtic Championship squads.

...and finally let's not forget the mainstay of that 83 Championship team from Philly

The one and only...........Dr J! Julius Erving!

Chirography on card auto graded 100 by CGA. Pristine...........

As always, thanks for looking and having a read. Comments are always appreciated!

Very nice Skip
Thanks Irving auto is awesome!

Funny thing is when you said Irving auto the first person I thought of was Kyrie! Youngster has to earn his stripes yet whereas Doc is in the Hall already!

So sweet... my teeth hurt! lol

Sweet mailday is always better than a biter box break!

I like that Choc Majestic but the cornbread is my fav!! Great work and great read as usual Skip!

I thought you might appreciate that one - bit of a psycho character but definitely a driving force behind those early 80s Celtics!

Loving the old school. Nice!

Cheers mate - some Isiah next time perhaps! I normally have some Bad Boy Pistons to show!

nice pickups mate.

Few Fleer in there for you Dom - as the resident Fleer guru which insert do you like best?

Awesome pickups, the retro inserts are very nice, sweet grade on the dr j

If you need the Walt sing out, pretty sure you already had it though. Dr J is too dang good, well technically speaking - it's PERFECT!!!!!!

Love the legends! Are you collecting Fat Lever too now? :p

Not really collecting him, but more of a mini tribute. A 'homage' if you will! lol

Awesome old school mailday mate, capped of perfectly with the Dr J!

Is there a Dr in the house? No, it's THE Dr in all it's glory - what a stunner!

Old school maildays are the best kind! Awesome stuff Skip!

...they don't make them like they used to! ;-)

Nice Skip! Didn't know that about Fat Lever! And is his full name LaFayette Lever or am I thinking of a different LaFayette?

The one and only Lafayette 'Fat' Lever. One of the great all round talents in his prime but nowhere near the recognition of the Big O or Bron....go you Fat Lever go! lol

very nice mailday, love the DrJ

Not many Lakers in there for you but you don;t have to be a 76ers fan to appreciate a good Dr J!

Good going Skip, great looking old school cards and like that play card, really sweet!

The old Bowman 48s are unsurpassed - always remember looking at them in Becketts when I was younger. Dojo resurrection coming up soon (mailday after the next mailday?) - it has one extra very cool addition you might enjoy seeing!
