xbox live help!

honestly i dont know what i'm doing wrong.. im new to the whole xbox thing so i dont know if ive missed something!
I am trying to run a connection through my laptop via ethernet.. i have set up the bridge connection but keep getting a can't connect error.. the problem lies between the xbox and the network. do i have to change any settings.. in the network settings it says.
Network status: not connected
Internet: not connected
x-box live: not connected
Please guys any help would be amazing ive been trying things all day.
Ive tried so many things from youtube etc but still nothing.
