Hello,
I'm going into year ten next year, and we do work experience for a month between June - July and i'm currently struggling for idea's of somewhere to work.
No AFL clubs allow work experience and the job's with cricket Victoria are already gone. I like law and the whole idea of being a lawyer is a possible prospect.
But as I said, I dunno what to do for work experience?
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Jackson.

Tbh unless you are lucky and get something you want to do work exp is a bit of a lark i ended up doing it at a fire station in grades 10-11 a few years back. Great toys to play with :D!

i did construction was good but probs because i knew the guy and he even payed for petrol and lunch for the week.

I would avoid professional jobs (like Lawyers). They will not let you do anything, or probably not let you sit in on anything important. They will assign you to someone junior, who's job is probably paperwork and getting coffee. (though going with a stockbroker or fund manager or someone like that may be interesting if they let you in and have a look at what they were really doing).

Also lots of heavy or onerous jobs will probably not allow you due to their OH&S policies. Smaller offices and proprietors are less liekly to care about these thing though so they will probably let you do more things. The bigger they are, the more people there are between the top and the bottom (you) so you will be stuck on to the next bottom from you, which will not do much. If you are in a smaller office / workplace, you will be stuck with the next junior person, who may be the boss or close to it, so you will get to see more action.

So pick something that you can do something. I did mine with a vet when I was younger - did the cleaning and all that type of crap, but got to see them doing operations too. So that was interesting.

Just some advice, which I hope can be helpful for you.

Yeah mate speaking from experience I am a stockbroker and we have had a few kids come through for work experience. Like to get them fully involved see how the market works and why and how we do what we do. Every one of them has had a ball and walked away with a good insight into the industry.

I did my work experience with the NAVY and the RAAF, it was really great, I saw a lot of different things, got to be very involved. They even had me go through the fitness test the new candidates went through. I loved it so much that I joined the RAAF not ot long after that.

I think it is good to actually make the most out of your work experience, i had a bunch of mates who just stuffed around and wasted the 2 weeks.

Good luck with it mate, and don't be afraid to give the companies a call and ask what they usually get the work experience people to do, let them know that you want to get into the action. If you seem really keen they will probably let you do more.

Yeah, thanks for all the comments.
As most have you have said, I should try and go somewhere were I am going to be busy, and doing work. Thus the whole purpose of work experience.
When I get school out of the way next week I'll be making some calls.
Maybe the lost dogs home or a VET clinic would be good?
Jimmy I go to St. Pauls, where do you go?
Jackson.

i went as a clerk at a courthouse.... so basically did ur usuall boring office stuff but also got to sit in court with some of the guys and watch proceedings for public cases and what not. found it quite enjoyable and the younger girls in the office were always a pleasure to look at to pass the time...

Yeah, thanks for all the comments.

Lost dogs home will be a lot of poo shovelling.

Yeah did mine at a vet clinic in year 10, at the time I had no idea what I was going to do but it was very rewarding. Lots of hands on stuff with the animals, and whilst there is a bit of poo shoveling you also get your healthy dose of surgery as well

My advice is to do the work experience in an area that you are interested in... you can either pursue the occupation after or just cross it off your list of possible choices.

I'm studying as a vet right now, so I guess the work experience worked for me!

I go to Mckinnon Secondary College, we had exams today :S!

Jimmy,

I did various work experience when i was in high school from year 9 to year 12. First was back in 1999 at a stage production company in Leederville from then on i went onto a small film production company in Subiaco in 2000 and then did some time at my Uncle's lunch bar which is just around the corner from where i work now in East Perth (fun times :)) ,

In 2001 i did work experience at Channel 7 Perth in Tuart Hill for a semester every one day a week. I was there day after 9/11...was real interesting to see behind the scenes at a TV station. Even helped out at Telethon that year so was a great experience.

Then 2002 i did work experience at Channel 9 (which is just across from Ch 7) and that was a lot of fun. Basically was just going out with the camera crew to take shots for news and WA Tourism programs (funny blokes). I never did get into the TV industry but i really appreciated my time at the stations.

Oh work experience...those were the days.

$5 a day for slave labour!!!

I'm disabled and when I'm out of the house in a wheelchair so I thought work experience for me would be impossible but nevertheless I gave it a shot.

I rang a few places and finally K-mart said yes even though I told them I was in a wheelchair 100 times. It was a far cry from a job at Champion Data but it was a 10 minute scoot from home so I didn't care. In my day we only had to do 1 week. Monday and Tuesday I was sick so I started on Wednesday.

I did heaps of weird and wonderful things there like marking down damaged stock, tagging DVDs, ripping the covers off old magazines, putting security stuff on batteries and heaps of other stuff.

By Friday I thought, I wouldn't mind doing this as a part time job so I asked the manager if I could come back...or maybe it was the other way around...and they said I worked real hard in my 3 days and they invited me to come back on a long-term work experience type basis.

I was over the moon, I had half a job and I was earning money. Yeah it was $5 a day still but it was better than sitting on my bum all holidays.

So I went back the next Monday and had a good day at work. I had a hospital appointment on Tuesday, routine check up. I thought no big deal, I'll be back on Wednesday. So I saw the doctors, they looked at me, asked me stuff...then they said...YOU'RE NOT GOING HOME TONIGHT, YOU'RE HAVING AN OPERATION. And just like that my seemingly awesome life came crumbling down again.

So I was out for 2 weeks, went back to ask if I still had a job anymore...quite simply they said no...but in a really dragged out way.

So that's my story.

Going to go and ask for my job back this holidays, I've sorted out my body so I'll be there for the long run. Even if they give me $5 a day again I'll still take it.

Wish me luck!!!

Thanks Jimmy!!!

That was in 2007.

Had an operation again in 2008 and 2009.

So this year I've been operation free.

They've changed managers but some people still remember me.

Writing that story has made me really want to get my job back!!!

Thanks jacko.
