It is probably more so a case of 2 people putting high bids to 'guarantee the win'. I know I have bidded stupid high before as a just in case. If 2 people get the same idea, it can make a cheap card go crazy!
I think I remember @xavierty posted a Marcus Camby auto a while ago that went to $110 or something stupid because of it!

I think it's maybe because its the first in a long time that's popped up and set collectors have gone nuts.
I was surprised and thought awesome a new addition but not at that price especially when I know its real price is at like a quarter of that if that.
I might get shot down by saying this but To think that some low life has tried to corner the market on a card is just pathetic.
Some people might think it is okay to do but in the spirit of collecting it is utter BS
How low can you possibly get, that your best idea to try and make money from others is to corner the market of a collectible card.
In my opinion it is a Weak effort and someone of even weaker character that does this kind of thing.
The honest way to do it would be pick up the card, take care of the card, hold onto the card for a decent amount of time when they might become scarce (locked into peoples sets) but to manipulate the market to increase the value ... shame
I for one, am more than happy to have just a single copy of a particular card I like instead of purposly wrecking the fun for others .... end rant
