Was Muttiah Muralidaran a thrower. Or just a chucker?.

poor old murali :) a chucker maybe lol regardless of his action and who he got his wickets against he was and is still a great competitor. And not that i am any great judge but we had the chance to see murali bowl up real close like we where in the next net to him and he has the weirdest action and it all happens so quick i pity the poor old umpire

hope he gets it he should do. By the letter of the law he was a chucker, but I never really agreed with the degree of the 'bend in the arm' determining whether it was a 'throw' or not. I always thought if the bend in the arm reached a certain point, then the speed of the delivery should be taken into account... So the 'degree of bend' should maybe only apply to fast bowlers? I mean I'm pretty sure Murali wasn't trying to ditch the ball 200km/h at the stumps with his action, just spin the crap out of it... My thoughts...

Great competiter he certainly was and seems like a top bloke, but IMHO his action was illegal and I definately agree with Gilly. One things for sure - If he's still at the top of the tree in years to come, my kids and grandkids are going to know all about how Warney was topped only by a bloke who saw the rules changed to suit him.

A wicket with his last ball! and the 800th! good luck to him
i was there the day Hair called him and i was disgusted! it was a direction from the then ACB to handicap and already weak team! Even Ponting got a wicket that day! Poor Gurusignha!

Well done to Murali. I think that record will stand for a long time if not forever. Someone is going to have to play a lot of tests to get those soughts of numbers. Say you got 5 wickets per match thats 160 tests. Muralis figure where 133 tests for 800 wickets since 1992

.

He was a chucker, no ifs buts or maybes!!! Yes his arm may have been naturally bent but he still went in with his arm bent even more and extended it to the point it wouldnt go any further. He is a cheat in my books!

He got cleared twice by the ICC so how can he be deemed a cheat?! It is up to them to stop him from playing and they didn't. Murali in my mind is the greatest bowler of all time. 800 test wickets - enough said!!

They cleared him by changing the rules.

I agree with you AND Gilly = Chucker!

Off course an Australian would say that. We all know how much you love your cricket and I am sure it really hurts that one of your fellow countryman isn't on the top of all time wicket takers!

Surprisingly, no it doesen't. Just as i'm sure all New Zealanders don't think he is squeaky clean. To my mind Vettori is twice the bowler.

I think his action gave him a massive advantage. If u practise enough u can spin the ball a hell of a lot with a bent arm. I will never forget my unlce (who was a cheating aussie!!) spinning it miles with a bent arm on purpose one Xmas in the back yard. It was nuts.
Having said that - u cannot doubt the effort and personality Murali brought to the game.

He was a champ - he'll just always have an asterisk next to his name for me.
