Umpiring Consistancy

Whilst I'm not one to whinge about the umpires when my team gets beaten, I was at the Western Derby on Saturday evening and was disgusted by the umpiring inconsistencies particularly with respect to awarding 50m penalties, the chopping of the hands on a mark, and the two hands in the back in marking contests (yes, Mr. Pavlich was hard done by in the first half - in the second half, he was bloody well held by Glass and co).

On numerous occassions, there were seemingly obvious examples of the above which were ignored, then extremely soft kicks paid minutes later for the same thing. Did anyone see Juddy's p*ss-poor attempt at returning the ball to Bell for a free kick ... do you really think he would miss a target like that during play!?!

Certainly seeing a game live game a different perspective. On that point, fair go to Des Headland - none of us know exactly what was being said but Selwood was getting right into him in the centre of the ground about 100m off the ball in the minutes before Headland's explosion. Hope it all comes out and Selwood gets more than a $500 fine!!

Interested to hear other comments - we were outplayed, and umpiring definitely didn't change the result - but I reckon my bi*ching is warranted

yeah umpires have been so unconsistent so far. in the blues V bombers game, the umpires hardly paid holding the ball, and i saw about 6 they would pay in round 1.

what consistency?

The Hawthorn Kangaroos game must have been umpired purely on momentum Kangaroos got them all int he first half and we got them all in the second half even tho there were kicks that should have been paid each way.

I think Mark Williams is hard done by a lot his arms get chopped and he gets shoved and he just doesn't get the kicks.... I guess cos he's short? I dunno... it just sucks.

It seems your team DID get beaten and you ARE in fact whinging

In all seriousness, umpiring is a good excuse to vent your anger for your team underperforming (I do it) and your team is 100% underperforming !

The umpiring wasn't the best but I saw as much the Eagles way as you saw the Dockers :)

The one thing I can't stand about the umpiring nowdays is when the umpire gives a decision, the player argues and then umpire feels the need to point out why the player is wrong ! Just shut the **** up and award the Free, the Umpires word is what goes and that is all that matters ! I hate listening to the whiney pr*cks

There, that felt good :D

This is becoming more apparent in League as well, players/captains go over and want to discuss what happened to give there team a rest. In saying that captains have a right to ask what happened, maybe this sort of thing should be outlawed.

Fair call, Richo ... I AM whinging ... but I feel justified (just like every other team that is 0-3). :D

My point is the inconsistencies ... there were numerous occassions where Eagles free kicks were missed, too, but as a fan, when the action is right in front of you (eg. boundary throw-ins), the infringements are bloody obvious and still get missed. Yet little bullsh*t things get the whistle ... like Josh Carr's freebie in the second quarter ... Eagles fans had a right to be pi*sed!

Yeah I know what you mean mate......I guess my perspective changed when I took up Umpiring (Cricket & Touch Football), It's a thankless job and people never understand no-one is perfect ! My whole outlook on the LBW decisions is different, I used to go off if Hawk-eye showed it out and the Umpire missed it, now unless it is hitting the middle of the off or lef stump then I think....Fair Call :)

Umpiring AFL is also difficult, its a very fast game and the umpires quite often have to go on their instinct.........not easy ! That being said, i stll like to abuse them at the game (albeit under my breath)

The Blues v Bombers game was the worst umpired game I've seen. Horrible calls and no calls both ways, we got a free ride in the first half and in the second half couldn't buy a free. There were several obvious match turning frees that weren't paid or were paid the wrong way. And the free to Andy Lovett for a push in the back against Girlyhan is the worst free kick I have ever seen.

that hand in the back rule should be thrown out, and we should go back to an actual push in the back before the umpire blows the whistle.

umpires already make bad decisions, the hand in the back is making them look worse.

For a good spot on bad umpiring check the following games:
Collingwood vs Roos (Paid frees then let things go 2 seconds later)
Collingwood vs W.Coast (You can take the ball out of the ruck and get a free in front goal cos someone tackles, slightly high) (No touching Judd or Kerr)

The umpires are at it again this weekend with some ridiculous calls.

Sydney was robbed blind in front of their home crowd.

Essendon played great early on but the Swans were robbed blind in the end.

C'mon the Hawks.

It was...dont get me wrong i love spider, i still have my saints jumper with #11 on it :D but that was a BIG mistake in a close game...

Yes, very lazy of him.

But that wasn't the reason why we lost.

We played ordinary all night, a lot of uncharateristic mistakes and clangers.

BUt gee whiz, he had 2 feet over the darn side line, not to mention the ball was kicked out of bounds.

Pfft The Bombers would still have won. Considering the absolute ream job the umps did on them in the first half there is no point complaining about the one they missed paying against us in the last few minutes.

Yeah, the umps gave the Swans a free ride back into the game in the first half, and their supporters are whinging because they missed calling an out of bounds, which allowed us to kick the sealer. Of course they forget the ridiculous free to bevan ten metres out in the third quarter, and the two high hits directly in front to lloydy and davey in the third quarter that didn't get paid...

They lost, so suffer in their jocks to them. Not real happy with their fans booing lloydy and hirdy when their own team should have had 2 or 3 blokes reported for cheap shot hits.
