G'Day guys as some of you know I have a pretty heavy list of different base, insert and patch sets I'm collecting from the mid-90s to present day.
So I thought for those they may be looking for a new chase or base collectors who might like a new challenge might be interested in this three part series that in my humble opinion showcases the best that basketball has released, based solely on superb design not value, and only sets I have in hand as well.
Episode 1 - Top 5 Base Sets
This episode focuses on some common sets (not including RCs) from throughout the years that I think stand out from the pack as eye-catching examples of really well aesthetically designed sets.
5. First cab of the rank is......
2009-10 Panini Court Kings - I'm not a huge fan of most of Panini's releases thus far, but this set stands out with the canvas matte finish applied to the cards that make them appear vintage and modern at the same time.
The number 4 is proudly brought to you by.......
2007-08 Topps Echelon - The picture shown unfortunately doesn't to this set justice, but it features a graceful silver leaf and black border on nice thick stock with an almost holographic player image front and center, this set oozes class.
Counting down to number 3 we have......
2006-07 Fleer EX - The EX series have almost always featured great designs and is my favourite overall series, but the 06-07 set with the acetate background and slick and shiny player image and name make this the set to get if you're only going to grab one set of the series.
Winning the silver in the 2 spot is.....
2008-09 Upper Deck SPx - If you like die-cut cards bleeding with colour then this is the set for you, the 08-09 SPx set are made of a lightweight plastic I think, and because of that the colours on the cards simply pop out at you.
And the number 1 NBA trading card base set in my opinion is...........
2008-09 Upper Deck Radiance - I purely and simply love the design of these cards, no other set comes close in my opinion. The almost three dimensional effect of this set is seriously awesome the players seem as though they are emerging from the cardboard itself.
Next time, the Top 5 Insert Sets, thanks for reading.
It was good Thought you could possibly put 2007/08 SPX or 2006/07 SPX over Court Kings. Although I haven't seen Court Kings in hand so I can't really judge that lol
Great write up. 08-09 spx is prob my fav of all time, the only downside to it is the rookies, although they are great cards, there all jersey autos and there's 2 of them for each rookie making the set far too hard and expensive to properly complete.
I'd like to give an honorable mention to 04-05 upper deck. It's inexpensive, and not super flashy but there photography is great, the card designs are clean and classy and the 'star rookie' rc's look great and feature all rookies in there nba uniforms as opposed to the college photos on some of upper decks later base releases.
Hell yeah! 10-11 Gold is one of my favourites, but the base I like mainly because of the checklist. The real winner is the insert sets. If that makes your top 5 insert sets, hit me up for some pics
